Transaction log backup job failed suddenly

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 10, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

Hi-

We are using SQL Server 2000. There is a maintenance plan to backup three databases on a daily basis (full-backup) and their transactional log every 4 hours.

All the jobs have been running well, however, since last 3 days the transactional log backup job has been failing for one of the three databases. Transactional logs are stored on same location on disk.

I checked to confirm that there is enough space on the disk. Performed DBCC command on the database and that returned 0 errors.

I noticed the following errors:

From SQL server log:

“BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP LOG [XXXXXXXXXX] TO  DISK = N'H:\XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.TRN' WITH  INIT ,  NOUNLOAD ,  NOSKIP ,  STATS = 10,  NOFORMAT”

From Database Maintenance Plan History:

“[Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000)] Error 3241: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The media family on device 'H:\XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.TRN' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally”

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been a developer and now have to take c

Implementing Transaction in SSIS Package - [Execute SQL Task] Error: Failed to acquire connection "<

I have a simple SSIS package with three "Execute SQL Tasks". I am using ADO.Net Connection to execute SPs on a DB server. When I execute this package It works fine. So far so good. Now, I need to implement transation on this package. And problem starts now onwards. When I try to execute package after setting TransationOption = Required for the Sequence container which contains all the tasks, I get following error. [Execute SQL Task] Error: Failed to acquire connection "NYCDB0008.Export". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection. "NYCDB0008.Export" is the name of the ADO.Net connection. I have been hunting for any solution but all in vain. I have tried changing all DTC settings on the dev as well as Database server. Please respond if anyone has any solution. Thanks! Anand

Backup/restore Failed don't exist timer jobs

According to John Ferringer, i'm moving this post from "SharePoint Products > SharePoint Products and Technologies Forums > SharePoint - Setup, Upgrade, Administration and Operation (pre-SharePoint 2010) > Backup/restore Failed don't exist timer jobs".

Hi Folks, i'm recieving this message when i try to make a site collection/farm/site backup "The backup/restore job failed because there is already another job scheduled. Delete the timer job from the Timer Job Definitions page, and then restart the backup/restore job.". I'm going to central administration/monitoring/timer jobs/check jobs status but i can not find anything.

Multiple databases backup/restore in a transaction, if possible, into only one file

Hi dear,

I have three databases named XDW, XOLTP, XOLTPSchema. All of these are for only one application. In the application, user should do backup/restore using GUI.

So...

1. How I should do backup/restore in one transaction? i.e. all of three actions should be success elsewhere all of them should fail.

2. Is it possible to backup them into only one file e.g. X.bak?

3. Or, What is the standard solution in this condition?

Thanks in advance.

Transaction failed to rollback

I have a client which is running SQL 2005 Express on a Windows 2003 box. The system is very much barebones with extremely small storage space (10GB total!)

The other day I had done a column modification for them on one of their larger tables. Unknowingly, I was up against their threshold for diskspace and was unable to complete the transaction. I received the following:

Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.Tmp_jobresumes' in database '###' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup.

Thereafter, the the table could not be found. Neither the original table name nor the tmp table name. This is a huge issue as I found out that they also do not have a backup of the database where I could start to restore our log files up until the point of failure.

I'm in a major pinch because the tables contains all of their assets for candidates (they are a staffing firm) over the past 7 years and I cannot seem to figure out how best to retrieve this information - in part due to the fact that I am reluctant to make any moves (i.e. restarting server, etc.) as I do not want to loose any change of recovery unless I know the implications fully. I know that the data is st

How to specify "truncate log" doing transaction log backup in Mgmt Studio

SQL Server 2008 Mgmt Studio doc, backup a transaction log, says clearly:

 1.       In the Transaction log section:

For routine log backups, keep the default selection, Truncate the transaction log by removing inactive entries

But I have been back and forth in SQL Server 2008 Mgmt Studio, editing my Backup Database Task.  I pick the backup type Transaction Log.  I see the Disk and Tape options; the backup file and subdirectory options; Verify backup integrity option; Backup the tail of the log; set backup compress

Cannot Backup Transaction Log

Trans log is 265gb.  I have no available storage of that size to back up to.  I could backup to a network share if that were possible.  Please advise.  I have tried shrinking trans log as well as full backup of database which runs ok.  Still doesn't solve problem.

Differential backup failed because the previous backup metadata for Database of SQL Server

I'm developing a VSS requestor that backs up Microsoft SQL Server, among other things. Full backups and restores work just fine. A differential backup always fails though, giving an error in the event log with Event ID 8197:

"Differential backup failed because the previous backup metadata for Database <dbname> of SQL Server instance <instance> is corrupted"

and the writer is in the state "VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_POST_SNAPSHOT" with error hr=0x800423f4

When my full backup runs, the differential_base_xxx fields in sys.databases are updated and correctly reflect the time that the full backup was taken.

The documentation I have read on the SqlServerWriter says that the metadata is recorded in the VSS event BackupComplete, which is definitely being called. During backup I see the writer state move from waiting for backup complete to stable.

I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows 2008 R2. There are no other versions of SQL Server installed on that machine.

Can anyone suggest why this is happening?

thanks

James

Restore database backup with Copy_Only option failed ?

When we failed to restore a backup from a BAK file for SQL Server 2008.

Then we find that the backup is created by using BACKUP xxxx COPY_ONLY parameter.  When we attempt  to restore from Management Studio (with the database changed to single user mode), we get the error message "There is NOTHING in the "Select the backup sets to restore".

We would like to seek your advice on

1) Whether we can restore the database from Management Studio GUI ?

2) If not, can you suggest a SQL Script for the backup ?

Thanking you in anticipation.
