Backup distribution database fails

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 10, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

We recently did a windows update on our 2003 server. After the restart, one of our database backup jobs keep hanging. After a little troubleshooting i found that the job gets stuck on distribution database. i am able to backup all the user/system databases, but every time i try to backup distribution database, it just creates a 2kb file and keeps running. I have to manually kill the process. While the backup runs, there is no blocking as well.

The distribution databse is 300 MB and the backups worked fine before the restart.
I have peer to peer replication setup on the machine.

Any clues why i can't backup the database?
Any help would be appreciated.

Full Farm Backup Fails on Windows Sharepoint Services Search Database

I am just now starting to us central administration to backup the entire sharepoint farm.  All content backups fine except for the Search Database.  In looking through the backup log, it appears that the search database may not exist.  How can I determine if the search database actually does exist and if it does not can it be recreated?

Anybody have an idea of what causes this?  It's very consistent on one of my farms.

BACKUP WITH CHECKSUM against an encrypted database - restore fails

I have five databases sitting on a new SQL 2008 R2 server.  The databases originated on SQL Server 7, went through both a SQL 2000 and a SQL 2005 upgrade, and last month were migrated to this new SQL 2008 server.  All five databases are in SQL 2005 compatibility mode.  All five databases are using SQL 2008's full database encryption.

Over the weekend, I changed the page verification of these databases from "torn page" to "checksum".  Nightly full backups were completed on Sunday night, and successfully restored to our reporting and hot-standby servers.  Yesterday, I added the WITH CHECKSUM keyword to the backup jobs.  Nightly full backups ran last night, completed successfully.  The restores of those same backups to reporting and standby FAILED, with several assertion failure messages.

Today, I created a brand new database, in SQL 2008 compatibility mode and "checksum" page verification.  BACKUP WITH CHECKSUM produces a restorable backup.  I then enabled encryption on that database, and did the same BACKUP WITH CHECKSUM operation.  The resulting backup cannot be restored, NOT EVEN on the same server.  The restore appears to complete, giving the normal output stating how many pages it processed, but the "recovery" portion of the restore throws an exception.

SQL2008 - Cannot Restore a new database from a full backup of a different one, database in use

I am trying to restore a brand new database from a copy of another one and am encountering an error message stating: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The file <Backup source database file location> cannot be overwritten.  It is being used by database <Backup Source Database>. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) I am running the Restore procedure with the REPLACE option and am wondering why it is stating that the source database is the database in use when I am trying to restore and overwrite a completely different database. This issue happens when running the replace both in C# using SMO and when manually restoring with SqlServer Management Studio Interesting note is, the original source database is created / deployed using a database project within VisualStudios 2010 and then deployed to SqlServer through VisualStudios. Any thoughts on why this is happening? Thanks in advance for any help!

Full database backup takes so long

Today several full database backups took so long. Normally it took 2 hours to backup. But today the 5 backups didn't finish by the end of the work day. The backups went well until yesterday. I don't know what happened overnight. Is there a performance tool embedded in SQL Server? How can I find out why the backups take so long? What could be the possible reasons? Thank you,

Backup through Central Admin fails; works using stsadm

Hi, I'm trying to schedule automatic backups of my SharePoint 2007 site.  I wrote a .vbs script that does the backup with the following line:   objShell.Run "cmd /c stsadm.exe -o backup -directory """ & BACKUP_DIR & SITE_DIR & """ -backupmethod full -item ""Farm\Windows SharePoint Services Web Application\SharePoint - SharePointSites"" > """ & CURR_DIR & "log.txt""", 0, True   I ran the vbs script from the command line and everything worked fine.  I used the Windows Task schedule to run the script as a scheduled task.  The script ran fine and the backup completed successfully (according to the logs), but now if I go to the Central Admin page and try to do a restore, I get the error:   The backup/restore job failed. In order to rerun the backup/restore the timer job must be deleted from the Timer Job Definitions page. Failure Message: Backup or restore is already running.   The odd thing is I can do another backup or restore using stsadm at the command line and it works fine.  I can also run the scheduled task to do another backup and that works fine too.  I just can't do any backups or restores from Cetnral Admin anymore.   Any suugestions or ideas? Thanks. -Cynthia

Backup Database

Is there a way to execute Backup Database ONLY on the condition that nothing has been updated inserted or deleted? Thanks

SQL Server 2008 Windows Authentication Mode fails for Database Engine, error 18456

I installed SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (10.0.1600.22.080709-1414) on a Windows Vista 32-bit development machine with Windows Authentication Mode only (no SQL Server Authentication).   Since this is a development machine, I saw no need for Mixed Mode when I did the install.  The SQL Server Management Studio allows me to login to Analysis Services, Integration Services, Reporting Services, BUT NOT the Database Engine!Windows Authentication for the Database Engine gives the following error: EventID: 18456Login failed for user MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>]The 'fix' I have found online is to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine.  Unfortunately, I can't since I didn't install SQL Server Authentication mode (only Windows Authentication Mode).  It appears my only recourse is to uninstall, then reinstall in Mixed mode, then to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine. Before I do so, does anyone know of a better approach?Scott D Duncan

MSSQL 2008 R2 - database in restoring mode after backup - forever..

Hi folks,   i have this problem that occourred today with one instance of MSSQL 2008 R2 running on a WIN x64 R2 enterprise server.   i have run a backup maintainance job and now i have two databases in restoring mode for over 4hrs.   my questions are: why are these databases restoring when i was backing up? and why are they not being logged anywhere - i can not find anything on logs, activty monitor, or even Windows Resource Monitor.   i can not see any work been done by MSSQL to restore these databases, and yet they are set as 'RESTORING'.   any suggestion from the community here will be much appreciated as i am banging my head against the wall already.   thanks,   Nicolas    data warehouse | data migration | ETL/ELT | UK | http://www.brainpowered.net
