Unable to shrink log file

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 10, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

I am working with a small database. Data file is size 2 MB. But, the log file size is 11 MB. The database is in simple recovery mode. The version is SQL Server 2008 R2 64-bit standard. I am unable to shrink the log file to something lower than 11 MB. I am using the statement, DBCC SHRINKFILE (dblog1);

I have also used the statement, DBCC SHRINKFILE (dblog1, 10);

I would like any guidance on why the log refuses to shrink.

The following t-sql is used to view the space used:

 SELECT
ds.name as filegroupname
, df.name AS 'FileName'
, physical_name AS 'PhysicalName'
, size/128 AS 'TotalSizeinMB'
, CAST(FILEPROPERTY(df.name, 'SpaceUsed') AS int)/128.0 AS 'ActualSpaceUsedInMB'
, size/128.0 - CAST(FILEPROPERTY(df.name, 'SpaceUsed') AS int)/128.0 AS 'AvailableSpaceInMB'
, (CAST(FILEPROPERTY(df.name, 'SpaceUsed') AS int)/128.0)/(size/128)*100. as '%SpaceUsed'
FROM sys.database_files df LEFT OUTER JOIN sys.data_spaces ds
        ON df.data_space_id = ds.data_space_id;

Thank you.

Hi, I work in the creation of a portal in SPS 2003. We found that some documents whose size was greater than 1 Mb can no longer be opened. Word returns a runtime error "1177". When we restart the farm ,problem is resolved but reappeared after several hours .We have tried to restart the database to see if it could solve the problem, the problem is not corrected. Then we restarted the front-end web services SharePoint, this does not work. Then we did an IIS reset,the problem is not corrected. This problem affects all types of documents (pdf, doc, ppt, xls ...). Thanks for your help. Best Regards. Mawi. + DEVELOPER

Unable to install SQL Server 2005 SP2 - Unable to install Windows Installer MSI File

I have been trying to figure out how to fix this problem for the past couple of days and I was unable to find an answer to my specific problem in the forum.My OS is Windows XP Professional SP3 on MacBook Pro, using Parallels Desktop 4.0. Every single time Windows update tries to install SQL Server 2005 SP2, it fails. I am using Business Contact Manager with Outlook 2007 and SQL Server stops randomly and I am forced to restart the software. I am not sure if it is relevant to this specific problem but I thought I would make a note of this.I have downloaded SP2 and tried to install it locally but that did not work. Shrink database log file sql server 2005

Hi, I am trying to shrink log file for a testing database.This database will be restored with production database periodically.When i tried to create backup of the log file Processed 0 pages for database 'hcbeta', file 'HC_log' on file 6. The log was not truncated because records at the beginning of the log are pending replication. Ensure the Log Reader Agent is running or use sp_repldone to mark transactions as distributed. BACKUP LOG successfully processed 0 pages in 0.423 seconds (0.000 MB/sec). I tried EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL, @numtrans = 0, @time = 0, @reset = 1 Resulted with error:Unable to execute procedure. The database is not published. Execute the procedure in a database that is published for replication. So tried to publish the database using EXEC sp_dboption 'hcbeta', 'Publish', 'true' resulted error mesage:Msg 15242, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_dboption, Line 138 Database option 'Publish' is not unique. and retrived duplicate_options as "merge Publish" ,"Publish" Plesae help me in shrinking my database log file. Thanks, Adi.

Why doesn't SQL Server 2005 Enterprise always shrink a log file after a backup?

I have several databases that, despite being backed up regularly, do not release space to the operating system.  In one extreme case, I have a log file that is less than 1% utilized (and has been for months.) I know how to manually force a shrink, but I should not need to do that on any sort of regular basis.  In fact, it is against best practices to manually shrink a log file (or any database file for that matter) because of the very high risk of an unrecoverable error. It is my understanding that SQL Server will eventually handle these things on its own.  However, it does not appear to be doing so.  Any thoughts as to why? Thanks, Dave

How to shrink the sharepoint database log file

Hello,

I have a SharePoint content database with the size 70GB but he log file is 450GB. i wanted to shrink the log file. Can anyone tell me  how to do that ? It would be great if anyone can provide me the complete flow.

  1. Do I have to shink the log file when the database is offline?
  2. what if we just take the backup and create a new log file ?
  3. How do we restrict the size of the log file by not growing big but just auto shrink by it self.

This is all on the production server, i need to fix this asap. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

How can I shrink the size of LDF file after BACKUP LOG?

Ive just done BACKUP LOG against particular database and found no changes in size for the appropriate LDF file. It is shrunk only after I issue:

ALTER

DATABASE dssip

SET

RECOVERY SIMPLE

But this approach breaks all logs chain. Is there any way to shrink the LDF file for FULL backup model without destroying the whole sequece of log backups?

Unable to load data from txt file with text delimiter specified, if the data has the same character

Have come across a strange scenario and seeking your ideas/thoughts.

I'm using a ssis package to load a txt file. The txt file is text delimited by double quote (") and column delimited by tilde (~). It works fine in most scenarios and strips the enclosing "" from the columns -no problems there. However, in a specific scenario where the last column has double quote in the data as well being the text delimiter, the package throws the following exception indicating that it's missing a column delimiter

 The column delimiter for column "COL_NAME" was not found

This behaviour was not observed when double quotes were present as data in any other column in the file. Was able to workaround by disabled text delimiter only for the last column, but that isn't a perm solution. Also observed that if the " was replaced by escape sequence /" the file loaded successfully. Wondering if this a known issue ?

unable to unzip XML file with unicode characters in it's name.

Finally I did manage to build an application that supports unicode characters..

Now my application generates a zip file which contains an XML file. I want to unzip the zip file to view the contents of an XML file.

i am unable to unzip because the name of the zip file/as well as XMl file has Unicode characters(i.e. japanese Name) and it gives some error.

If i generate the XML file  with same contents but name of the files in English then i can view the contents of the XML file.

My query is i want to be able to unzip the XML file when the name of the file contains unicode characters in it.

as per my research up till now,  we either require a compatible winzip software or we have to create an utility for the same.

I need to know how to go about it. It's a little urgent as well.

Thnx in advance.

I am unable to unzip the file with the name: PMTI_MSPS_US_GAB_JAPANESE_PWA_????????1_PPM_2010093006260431.zip

I wanto unzip this file.

Unable to open an Excel File in Sharepoint MOSS 2007

I am unable to open an excel file in Sharepoint (MOSS 2007). All other documents work fine. As far as I know there was no change on the Server at all.

Excel found unreadable content in 'stuff.xls'. Do you want to recover the contents of this workgroup? If you trust the source of this workbook , click Yes

When I click YES >> It says "Excel recovered your formulas and cell values, but some data may have been lost." And then a link to an xml file , which reads :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
- <recoveryLog xmlns="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/spreadsheetml/2006/main">
  <logFileName>error075400_03.xml</logFileName>
  <summary>Errors were detected in file 'http://server_name/Project_name/Shared Documents/abc - def/Phase 5/Track/stuff.xls'</summary>
- <additionalInfo>
  <info>Excel recovered your formulas and cell values, but some data may have been lost.</info>
  </additionalInfo>
  </recoveryLog>

Now this has resulted in huge loss of data and I can see New numbers in the cells which is very strange!

Is there a way I can get it back ? I do not have a

Unable to upload .flv file on IIS 6.1

Hi guys,

I've been trying to upload a video file on my local harddrive and it seems it cannot process the upload. The .flv MIME type is already registered on my IIS but still it cannot process upload.

Any inputs would be a very big help.

Unable to detect file drop into anything

Hi... as far as I've searched everybody is able to detect file drop into their applicatiosn, but me.

I have a window with only a ListBox with AllowDrop=True, and hooked up every drag or drop event but none of these seems to fire when I drag a file (from Windows Explorer), or drop over it. Just get the "unable to drop" icon. Try with canvas, grid, window with no luck.

I'm obviously missing something basic.

Unable to upload report file to SSRS 2008 R2 Express

I'm attempting to upload a report file into an instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services (Express edition), and I'm having difficulty. While I can do things like create folders and manage security, I am unable to upload a report definition (.rdl) file from either the web console or via the ReportService2005.asmx web service. Both avenues eventually time out and generate a 401 error (though I am not sure that this 401 is legitimate, as it takes over a minute and a half to generate the error).

This instance is running the web services on a non-standard port (8080) in HTTP (not HTTPS) mode, as it's on a Windows XP Pro machine with an existing website on IIS.

I have looked at the report server access log, and this appears to happen when it errors out:

    rshost!rshost!380!10/13/2010-14:39:10:: e ERROR: ReadCallback(): failed to read in read callback.
