Installing .NET 3.5 SP1 on SQLServer

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 10, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

We have a production A/P cluster SQLServer running on SQL2005 SP3 Enterp 64-bit on Windows 2003 Enterp 64-bit SP2. The dotnet framework version on the server is 2.0. We would like to install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on the SQLServer.

Is there any risk involved in this? Any precaution or best practices? This is a 24x7 box and so we would like to limit the risks involved.

Thank you!

installing sqlserver 05 beside sqlserver 08

I have already installed sqlserver 2008 on W7 and created database on this version but my hosting provider are using sqlserver 2005. so in this case if I create a backup on the sqlserver 08 then it will not be able to restore on sqlserver. I have found a way around to do this using Task->Generate Script but didn't get much succeed.

Does anyone can suggest any solutions?

at the same time, I am thinking to install sqlserver 05 on w7 so does this possible to install sqlserver 05 if the sqlserver 08 already on the computer?
I found few post to install sqlserver 05 first then remove shared components only then install sqlserver 08 but not the other way around.

thanks, look forward to hear your suggestions / comments

Regards, Athar

Keep going around in circles when installing SQLServer 2008

I tried to download from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter, but I kept going in circles when I clicked "Cancel" on the page where they ask for personal information. It is not mandatory to provide this information as is written at the top of the page. But when I click "Cancel", I just return back to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter.

Installing and Uninstalling Services

Installing and Uninstalling Services.Unlike most projects you create in Visual Studio .NET, Windows Service projects cannot be run directly from the development environment by pressing F5. This is because the service in the project must be installed before the project can run.

You can quickly install your service application by using a command line utility called InstallUtil.exe.

Date and Time Functions in SQLSERVER

Date and time functions allow you to manipulate columns and variables with DATETIME and SMALLDATETIME data types.

1 DATEPART Function
2 DATENAME Function
3 DAY, MONTH, and YEAR Functions
5 DATEADD Functions
6 DATEDIFF Function
7 More SQL Server Functions

Data Types - Date and Time in SqlServer

Date and time values can be stored with either the DATETIME or SMALLDATETIME data type. The difference between the two is that SMALLDATETIME supports a smaller range of dates and does not give the same level of precision when accounting for time. The DATETIME data type can hold values from January 1st of 1753 to December 31st of 9999. The time is stored to the 1 three hundredths of a second and each value takes up 8 bytes of storage. The SMALLDATETIME data type can hold values between January 1st 1900 and June 6th of 2079. The time is tracked to the minute and each value takes up 4 bytes of storage. The majority of business applications can live happily with SMALLDATETIME, however, if you are in an environment where each second matters or you need to make estimates to the distant future (or past) then you have to resort to DATETIME. If you fail to specify the time when inserting a value into a DATETIME or SMALLDATETIME column, a default of midnight is used. If you fail to specify the date portion the default of January 1, 1900 is used.

SqlServer - Windows Account to install Application from Gallery

Referring to this tutorial: http://www.asp.net/webmatrix/tutorials/download-and-install-an-asp-net-application

I selected umbraco cms and got this wizard:

I already have Standard Sql Server 2005 on my machine which I wanted to us for above DB and not SqlExpress.

I did not remember "sa" account pwd nor I use explicitly any account to connect to my Sqlserver. I use Windows Authentication account i.e implicit authentication. So I created new account and gave all rights and used it in the above wizard and was able to install the database after some struggle.

My question is: What if I want to use my Windows Account to install the database above? Why the wizard don't have any option to use Windows Integrated Authentication?

Note: I can create the DB with external user I created, just looking specifics for using Windows Authentication for above installation.

Installing both VS Pro 2008 and VWD2008

I work at an educational institution and in our computing labs we have Visual Studio Professional 2008 installed already. One of our academics has requested me to install Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition as they think it's easier for their beginner students to learn, but I've noticed it wants to install it in the same folder as our Visual Studio Professional install.

Can both be installed without the limited VWD interfering with the Professional version?

Installing a httpModule on IIS6

I am trying to install a httpModule on an IIS 6 web server. I have the same module working on an IIS 7 test box, but we still have a couple of IIS 6 boxes to support.

The module is:

  • c# .NET 2.0
  • registered in the GAC
  • added to the system level web.config (as we want this for all applications on the box). I followed the instructions from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms227673.aspx. I tried it with both short name (as in the web page) and the full strong name (like the other entries in the <httpModules> section.

So, I am at a loss as it does not appear to even being called and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
