Implementation of Audit Fields and optimistic concurrency

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :.NET Framework
What is the best way to implement Optimistic concurrency? Also, I have 4 audit columns in every table in my database. They are created date, updated date, created by, updated by. Application should populate these fields. I want to know how to populate created date , and updated date? From where application datetime or database datetime? On save button click, if I have to save data into 4 different tables, then I need to have same datetime in all 4 audit fields correct? What is the best way to implement this? What will be the design? Please let me know.

How to turn off optimistic concurrency checking?

I have run into a problem with optimistic concurrency in my dynamic data application (where all relevant settings are at their default values); when I try to update or delete one of my tables, I see the following error:

 Exception type: ChangeConflictException
 Exception message: Row not found or changed.

I am the only user of my database at the moment, so I can guarantee that the data both exists and has not been changed outside the application!

Various forums have suggested that the way to deal with this is to set the column attributes so that the concurrency checking is disabled; i.e.

[global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ColumnAttribute(Storage="_PropSurname", DbType="NVarChar(255)", UpdateCheck=UpdateCheck.Never)]

However, to do this manually through the Visual Studio designer will take me hours (I have a lot of tables) and if I then change the schema of one of the tables in the DB, won't I then have to do it all again?  I've tried editing the .designer.cs file directly but my changes are subsequently overwritten (as expected).

All suggestions gratefully received!

Optimistic Concurrency with T-SQL

I have a simple update command: UPDATE Cars SET CarName = @CarName, CarReleaseDate = @CarReleaseDate, CarModel = @CarModel WHERE (CarID=@CarID) After reading around i understand this statement could be converted to implement optimistic concurrency. If so how do i convert this code to accept concurrency issues and avoid having rows edited by two users? Thank you

Generic Implementation of Audit Trail

I want to create a generic audit trail of my database in which I can store new/old values of fields. Now problem is that in most of the samples they create triggers which are specific to table and column. How can I implement a generic audit trail in Oracle.What I mean by generic is that there might be some SP and tables which I can add to any Oracle Database and system will start logging tables. I wont mind if I have to define triggers on every table for insert/delete/update but Code in all triggers should be same and not specific to that table. Can anyone help me out. Thanks in advance to all who will help me

jQuery Date picker Implementation in ASP.NET

I've posted a wrapper ASP.NET around the jQuery.UI Datepickercontrol. This small client side calendar control is compact, looks nice and is very easy to use and I've added it some time back to my control library.

This is primarily an update for the jQuery.ui version, and so I spend a few hours or so cleaning it up which wasn't as easy as it could have been since the API has changed quite drastically from Marc's original implementation. The biggest changes have to do with the theming integration and the resulting explosion of related resources.

If you want to use this component you can check it out a sample and the code here:

Create ID (uniqueid?) from two fields when data is entered

I need to create an ID from two fields when they are entered into the db for the first time.  I thought Uniqueidentifer would do this, but it looks like uniqueidentifier is random and i have no control of the process.

My user will enter 4 letters into a column called INIT and 4 numbers into a column called NUMB.  What I would like to do is create an id by combining those fields.

How can I do this?

LINQ with GridView and edit fields

My project includes a grid view which displays information of inventory items (Assets), data is quried from AssetTable. The GridView has a command field to allow editing, below is a description of the tables and how data is displayed

BuildingTable: (BuildingID, BuildingName)

AssetTable: (BuildingID,..,....,....)

ItemTemplate: Using a LINQ query I join the two table and displays in a label control a string which includes BuildingID and BuildingName (5 North Building)

 EditItemTemplate: Using a LINQ query I populate a DropDownList with strings of BuildingID and BuildingName same as above.
Here issue which I need to resolve:
1. ItemTemplate display the correct information (BuildingID BuildingName) but when I switch to EditItemTemplate the pair that is
displayed is the first one on the list, how do I make is scroll to the item which was displayed in the label ?
<asp:CommandField ShowEditButton="True" >

Debug implementation of URLrewriter.net

After some googling and help from the forum, I have integrated the the URLrewrting.net in my project. There are no error when I build the project, but the URL rewriting does not work. I am able to figure ot where the problem is. Is there a way to debug this. The code is as below:

 Web.config file

<?xml version="1.0"?>
    Note: As an alternative to hand editing this file you can use the
    web admin tool to configure settings for your application. Use
    the Website->Asp.Net Configuration option in Visual Studio.
    A full list of settings and comments can be found in

Synchronization Coverage: Code Coverage for Concurrency

As more and more multi-threaded software applications get developed, software development professionals need to adopt new tools, techniques and metrics that can deal with multi-threaded software. Synchronization coverage is a simple, practical way to do this and this article covers a prototype synchronization coverage tool for .NET, called Sync Cover.
