Check the if SSAS Roles property is used in excel connection string before returning the values

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 10, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

We are using Excel 2007 to connect to SSAS cubes. We have many roles for a user and all having different permission including different VISUAL TOTAL setting. We want to restrict the user so that he cannot see anything if he is not using the ROLES property in the excel connection string.

At the run time I want to know if the user who is using excel has used ROLES property or not.

Any help will be appreciated

How to change connection string of a pivot table pointing to SSAS 2005 cube using excel 2003?

Hi All,I am not sure if I should have posted this query to Excel 2003 forum. But posting it here as it applies to SSAS 2005 as well.Ok, let me give the background before I tell the actual problem.We have users on ABC domain and the SSAS server is also on ABC domain. Users on this domain can acess the excel pivots by connecting to cube to browse the data. They leave the Userid & password field blank while they setup the connection string and it works fine. Thanks to windows authentication that takes the credentials of user logged in. Let's say I have two users A and B, they login to ABC domain with their own windows ids.  Now when user A creates a excel file having a cube pivot and then sends this file to user B, user B can refresh and modify the same excel file (he can select new measures to pivot, new hierarchies in filters and so on).Now, let's say I have another user, user C. He has excel 2003 installed on his PC and cannot migrate to excel 2007. He is on different domain XYZ but have a valid windows userid on domain ABC. The domain ABC & XYZ can not be setup to have trusted relationship. Now, when user A sends the same excel file to user C. When user C opens the file and try to refresh it or try to modify the pivot by selecting/deselecting any elements, he gets below error prompt:" An error was encountered in the transport layer." and "Errors in the

abstract away the source of the connection string using a class with a static property.

ASP.NET provides a configuration system we can use to keep our applications flexible at runtime. In this article we will examine some tips and best practices for using the configuration system for the best results.

The element of a web.config file is a place to store connection strings, server names, file paths, and other miscellaneous settings needed by an application to perform work. The items inside appSettings are items that need to be configurable depending upon the environment, for instance, any database connection strings will change as you move your application from a testing and staging server into production.

Let's abstract away the source of the connection string using a class with a static property.

Do Membership Roles work with custom connection string?

Hi all, plz help with one issue.
I have Membership configured with IIS7, tables for it located in my own database, created with aspnet_regsql utility, and I am using custom connection string to access it.

This is part of web.config related to Membership :

        <add connectionString="Server=CORESERVER\SQLExpress;Database=Shop;User ID=Tema;Password=Matrix" name="CustomSqlConnection" />
    <profile enabled="true">
            <add name="CustomSqlProfileProvider" type="System.Web.Profile.SqlProfileProvider, System.Web, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" connectionStringName="CustomSqlConnection" />
    <roleManager defaultProvider="AspNetSqlRoleProvider" enabled="true">
            <add name="CustomSqlRoleProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider, System.Web, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" connectionStringName="CustomSqlConnection" />

SSAS Deployment Wizard - Data Source connection string userid and Password getting removed

I have an SSAS database (Analysis Services 2005) which connects to Oracle for the data. I have the userid and password
saved in the connection string.

If I deploy the cube from Visual Studio I DON't have to manually edit the Data Source in the server to input the userid and password. The information is retained.

If I do a build and then deploy .asdatabase file using Deployment Wizard (Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Deployment.exe), the connection information dissappears. I have "Remove Passwords" = False in Project configuration. So when you build the project there will be a file with extension .assecurityinformation which holds the encrypted security info. Somehow

deployment wizard doesn't look at this file.

After the build I execute this command

Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Deployment.exe  .\Project.asdatabase /s:.\Deployment.log

I tried interactively and silent mode. Either way I cannot deploy the project with the userid and password in it.

Any clue?

Connection problems: Excel 2010 SSAS 2008 R2

I am using SQL 2008 Analysis Server 10.0.2740.0 on a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise 64 bit OS.  I followed the instructions on setting up the msmdpump for IIS7.  My IIS7 box is also a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise 64 bit OS.

I have an Excel 2010 64 bit spreadsheet on a Windows 7 SP1 64 bit OS, that currently has this as a connection string:
Provider=MSOLAP.4;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=True;Initial Catalog=PointBridge;Data Source=chipbcsql08;MDX Compatibility=1;Safety Options=2;MDX Missing Member Mode=Error

When I changed the connection string to Data Source=http://cube.mydomain.com/olap/msmdpump.dll instead of the servername of chipbcsql08 I get an Excel error dialog box:  The HTTP server returned the following error:  Method Not Allowed

I then click ok and get a 2nd Excel error dialog box that says:  Errors in the OLE DB provider.  An error occurred while loading the connection dialog box component for prompting.

Ideas on what I need to change?  I think I am about to make this happen!!  haha  Helpful thoughts will be rgeatly aprpeciated!!

SQL Connection String

We can learn or know how can we connect the database from our .net. This will help for freshers or .NET beginners!

connection string question from a newbie

when publishing  in the webmatrix dialogue it asks for "destination connection string" for my "database.mdf"

I was not sure what it was so I pasted this from my web.config file :

Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\database.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True

it all published ok, but wont run, so I guess it has somthing to do with this connection string or some kind of configuration issue.

My question is this, What should go in the field for "Destination connection string"

Returning datas from two excel file

I used the below code to return the datas from one excel file. My question is if i suppose need to get the records from morethan one excel file using joins, how it is possible.

   string connString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["xls"].ConnectionString;
        // Create the connection object
        OleDbConnection oledbConn = new OleDbConnection(connString);
         // Open connection
            // Create OleDbCommand object and select data from worksheet Sheet1
            OleDbCommand cmd = new OleDbCommand("SELECT * FROM [Sheet1$]", oledbConn);
            // Create new OleDbDataAdapter
            OleDbDataAdapter oleda = new OleDbDataAdapter();
            oleda.SelectCommand = cmd;
            // Create a DataSet which will hold the data extracted from the worksheet.
            DataSet ds = new DataSet();
            // Fill the DataSet from the data extracted from the worksheet.
            oleda.Fill(ds, "Employees");

Modifying connection String in Web config using Install Wizard

Im trying to create a Web Deployment Project, the built in setup and deployment is very good in Visual Studio, i need to able to add an additional step in the setup to change the connection string in the Web config file. Ive seen a lot of articles on how to do this and in particular this http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2007/06/15/tip-trick-creating-packaged-asp-net-setup-programs-with-vs-2005.aspx#7162670 I am however stuck on the final part of this tutorial, im using the code Scott provided but have two errors,  heres part of my code where the errors are

using System;
using System.Configuration;
using System.Configuration.Install;
using System.ComponentModel;
using System.Diagnostics;
using System.IO;
using System.DirectoryServices;

 void ConfigureDatabase(string targetSite, string targetVDir, string connectionString)
            // Retrieve "Friendly Site Name" from IIS for TargetSite
            DirectoryEntry entry = new DirectoryEntry("IIS://LocalHost/" + targetSit

Control Values When Returning to Page

Why do controls value not persist when returning to a page (e.g. via browser back button)?  If I set control values without utilizing a post back the controls will maintain their last value when I return to the page.  If I set a control value and then call a post back, the control value is reset to the default value when returning.

I have many pages with a gridview, and a textbox which is used to filter the gridview contents.  I set the filter textbox, filter the gridview (postback), go to another page, and when I return to the gridview page (via back button), my filter textbox is reset empty, and the gridview is the original (unfiltered) data.

What concept am I missing here?

Thanks in advance...

Excel Connection Manager Problem

I am building a package that has 2 tasks that need to use the same excel connection manager. I use a execute sql task to dynamically build a table from the headers of the excel sheet  ,then I use an excel source component to load the data from the sheet. However when I try to edit the excel source and switch the data access mode to a variable and select the variable(for the path), when I try to close the editor I get this message 'S:\myfolder'.  It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data. I need this package to access the same folder each time because the files will be placed in that folder. This package also has a branch for loading a text file into sql server. It access the same folder but uses a flatfile connection manager It looks like permissions on the folder are correct

Excel 2007 Filter on multiple values

Hi Everyone,How do I use Excel 2007 Pivot Table's label filters/value filters to filter with multiple conditions? for example, I want to get all customers with customer name start with "G" and doesn't include "E" and with measure>100 and measure between 50-60.Regards,George

Custom security via connection string

Hi Is it possible to pass information into the SQL Server relational engine via the connection string in the same way as it can be done for Analysis Services? I need to generate a user context for a forms authentication application (i.e. no windows user accounts). SSAS allows you to pass in a list of database roles or a customdata parameter on the connection string. These can be used inside the database in lieu of a windows identity. I am wondering if there are equivalent parameters available for the SQL connection string.  I guess that I could create SQL logins from each of the forms users with a system generated password and then pass the uid and password on the connection string but this seems unnecessarily complicated. Andrew Wiles - www.it-workplace.com - MDX made simple

connection string

on the computer with sql management installed i use this and it works(server name):  .\SQLEXPRESS the computer name is: MAINCOMPUTER2 another computer on the network would use what? i can see  the c drives on either computer from either computer so i am connected.

Can not get excel connection when calling an SSIS package from ASP

I have an SSIS package importing data from excel. I have coded it and deployed it on the sql 2008 server. I then execute it via a stored procedure with the following: select @cmd = 'C:\"Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\DTExec.exe" /sq "HRIS"' select   @cmd = @cmd + ' /SET \Package.Variables[User::path].Properties[Value];"' + @path + '"' exec   @rtn = master..xp_cmdshell @cmd   This works fine when  i execute it on my local machine. But when I try to call this Stored proc from my asp app (classic asp, not .net) I get the error: Code: 0xC0202009 Source: HRIS Connection manager "SourceConnectionExcel" Description: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft JET Database Engine" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Unspecified error". End Error   Any help would be greatly apprecitated
