SSRS service intermittently stops, won't restart.

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 10, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

I've been having some issues lately with my SSRS 2008 R2 installation.  Its up and running for a few months now with no major issues but i've encountered a problem over the past few weeks that is very intermittent and hard to troubleshoot.

The actual reporting services service will stop (inaccessible via report manager) and has to manually be restarted. I've configured service recovery of 'Restart the Service' and even tried to have it run a batch file that restarts it to no avail.

I've also tried setting it to 'delayed' as i know some services' dependencies can cause stoppage if not running. The report manager is always slow to load on first load of the day and can sometimes cause the service to stop. I've also run random reports and had the service stop w/o warning yet after a restart it can run for days without happening again.

Quick background: Windows Server 2008 x64, MSSS 2008R2 x64, SSRS 2008R2, Xeon Quad w/8gb DDR3, MINIMAL server load at any given time and there are no 'end users' on this yet, just me.

Event Log from last service failure:

Source:        Application Error

WCF Service stops after throwing a unhandled exception :no user is logged on.

Hi All,       I have written a WCF service which is hosted as a Managed windows service. I consume this service in a web application. The service is built using a httpBasicBinding and security Mode ="none". I'm now getting the following exception, after which the service stops  "An unhandled exception ('System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception') occurred in CMMonitorService.exe [1812]. Just-In-Time debugging this exception failed with the following error: Debugger could not be started because no user is logged on." I had tried changing the security mode to Transport/Message. with windows credential then I get a access to the path denied error. Can anyone provide hint on what am I missing and what would be the appropriate security mode and client credential to use along with basichttpBinding?

SSRS Subscription Management: Restart, Stop, View Status, update properties, etc

As SSRS admins, there are times when a user comes to us and ask: I didn't get my reported emailed to me today?or worst, a report subscription going to multiple people doesn't run and now you have lots of people missing their subscription - (suppose server crashed, or something happened).One idea of course would be to have the subscription owner re-schedule it to run now, or create a new -- but - i'm thinking - we should create a subscription adminstration tool.a .net app that queries the ssrs web service, gets a list of subscriptions in the ssrs system (or perhaps by folder) and then is able to 'restart a subscription', "stop a running one", 'view all subscription status, schedule, owner, etc' if I wanted to d this - what is the web service that I could use this for?and most importanly - has anybody dont anything like this that they can share?this is for ssrs 2005 & and I'm hoping 2008 can be called through the same .net app tool

Windows Service Suddenly Stops with no logged message

Background: I have a windows service which hosts some wcf services and multithreading has been used there heavily. I'm using Enterprise Library to log messages, handled and unhandled.  AppDomain.CurrentDomain.UnhandledException += OnUnhandledException;  private static void OnUnhandledException(object sender, UnhandledExceptionEventArgs e)         {             Logger.Error("An unhandled exception has been thrown.", (Exception)e.ExceptionObject);         } Problem: The problem is that randomly my windows service stops on production and I get no log messages saying that the services stopped or what exception details. Question: I haven't created any new AppDomain explicitly. Shouldn't all the threads run in the same default CurrentDomain? if so, why nothing gets logged when the service stops suddenly? Thanks in advance.

WCF Service hosted in IIS 6 failing on idle timeout and does not restart

I've got a WCF service hosted in IIS 6 with its own application pool.  The application pool is running under a domain service account.  It appears that the application pool's idle shutdown setting is killing WCF service and subsequent requests to the WCF service get an exception as listed below I can only access after I browse to the .svc page in order to get it working again.   I've went through the svc tracing and able to see where the ServiceHost closes down. I have tried various session management techniques with no result. I haven't read anything about having to disable the idle timeout in IIS 6 when hosting a WCF service, and I suspect that there shouldn't be any need to.   Can anyone provide any insight into why this is happening?   ******************* My client exception ******************* Test method **********  threw exception:  System.ServiceModel.ProtocolException: The content type text/html; charset=utf-8 of the response message does not match the content type of the binding (text/xml; charset=utf-8). If using a custom encoder, be sure that the IsContentTypeSupported method is implemented properly. The first 1024 bytes of the response were: '<html>     <head>         <title>Runtime Error</title>

On starting SSRS Service SQLDUMper starts system freezes

HI All,

          I have SSRS 2008 64-bit for MS CRM 4. Recenlty I am facing very strange problem. If I delete ReportServer Database and then I try to access http://servername/reportserver, I get 'Cannot open database "ReportServer" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. Which is obvious but if I recreate the ReportServer Database using Reporting Services Configuration Manager then instantly SQLDumper starts and URL do not show anything in browser except keep waiting. The Following Things in Dumps- (filename is SQLDmpr....log):

Restarting Server: How to restart User Profile Sync Service?

Greetings all,

We had to restart our server, and once restarted, the User Profile Service (that we so laboriously fixed/reconfigured a month back) isn't starting. We get a retry on "User Profile Sync is provisioning, please wait..." before it terminates.

Can someone please recommend the best order in which to re-start the services so User Profile Sync restarts and continues to update?

Thanks SO MUCH,

Sql Server Express keeps dropping out (service stops) on standby

My SqlExpress server instance keeps dropping out (service stops) every day or so. I suspect it is triggered by system standby, which is the only interruption the computer currently has (never noticed it with hibernation enabled).

PC is a home WindowsXP development machine.

Any clues as to why this might be or how to stop it?

Replication: Server restart vs service restart

Replication does not break when i restart the SS Agent, however, when there is a server restart, i get a message : The process was successfully stopped. and the Subscription Status is NOT RUNNING? Why does this happen? Does Tx replication not automatically sync after a server restart?

SSRS 2008 Web Service Datasource doesn't return embedded class

I am building reports with SSRS 2008 using web services as datasource.

Let me explain my design:

I have 2 classes:

public class Employee

{ public string fname;

public string lnamel;

public Department dept;

public class Department

{public string name;

i have this function as a web method:

public Employee GetEmployee(string lastname)

      Employee emp = new Employee();
      // I query the DB and return the result in a datatable
     // I then bind the table fields to my Employee object
     return emp;

When I test the service, it return the employee's info and his/her dept info as well.

But when i test the dataset in the report, it only return the employee's info and not the department info.

Any suggestion?

Thanks a lot!!!

SSRS 2005 Web Service Issue

I added the SSRS Web Service to my VS 2008 Project and found some of the methods are simply not exposed or I am doing something wrong (which is most certainly the case). Below is the article I am referencing:

Here the URL I used for the service: http://192.168.XXX.XXX/reportserver/ReportService2005.asmx?WSDL

SQL Server: 2005 (SP2)

Below is my code:

Imports System.IO
Imports System.Web
Imports TestJunk.SSRS_WebService 'Designated Name of Service

Public Class Form1

 Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
 Dim MyRS As New ReportExecutionService()'Error: Type 'ReportExecutionService' is not defined
 End Sub

End Class

Generating SSRS report by taking data both from sql server and web service.

In my report, i need join data from both sql server and web service and display that on ssrs report.

is this possible in ssrs ?

Analysys Services service stops all the time

I'm having a problem, since SSAS is stopping two or three times a day, when Analysis Services Cube is processing. However, the same exact cube also processes sometimes without any problem.

The Event log is logging this error;

The description for Event ID ( 22 ) in Source ( MSSQLServerOLAPService ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Internal error: An unexpected exception occured..

I went to see the log files SQLDUMPER_ERRORLOG.log in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\Log

And I see this every time the service goes down:

Trouble installing SSRS 2008 R2, XP Pro SP3, can't access Web Service or Report Manager URLs

I found a great thread by Uday titled "SQL 2008 Reporting Services Win XP SP2" and worked through it, but I am still stumped.

I am using port 8080 cause this was default.  I tried changeing to 80, but it didn't help, so changed back.  IIS is using port 80 and is currently stopped.

I see both databases in SQL Server and can query while logged in as Account that is used for the service account.  SSRS is running.

URL reservations look good in the rsreportserver.config file.  In Native mode.

While in RS Config Manger I can test database connection and it is good.  When I click the webservice URL or the Report Manger URL in the Config Manager I get errors "Web site can not be found" and "Website can not display page"  I just upgraded to IE 8.  Can't figure out what to do next.

When I use httpcfg.exe I see a URL for http://+:8080/ReportServer/   and http://+:80/Reports/.  This could be the problem.  How can I chages seconfd to port 8080?

Any help would be appreciated.

Ajax enabled WCF Service stops working with Undefined error

 I have an Ajax Enabled WCF service that I call from Javascript.  It works fine, but often after I make unrelated changes to the website it will fail and Javascript will report an 'Undefined' error.  I can easily fix it by deleting the service, removing the system.serviceModel section of the Web.config and then recreating the service.  I don't have to change any of the references in the .aspx or .js files.  Also, the replacement service has identical code in the .config, .cs and .svc files (I don't see any differences).  This morning, I only made some cosmetic changes and the service stopped working again.

Any insight into what I am doing wrong?
