mining model will not process on a named instance of SS 2005

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 10, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

What should be done if the error message is received:

OLE DB connection error

"make sure SQL Browser service is running on localhost"

My Browser service is running but it's on a named instance, not localhost.

My cube won't process (although I can browse it), neither will the mining model I've developed.

I've searched throughout the code but can't find any explicit reference to browser service. Where is the localhost specification appearing in the processing (either of the cube or the mining model)?

Are there any known fixes for this problem?

Thanks so much!

Adding named instance of SQL Server 2005 failed - "Error Locating Server/Instance Specified"

We are trying to add a named instance to our Windows 2003 R2 x64 SP1/SQL Server 2005 SP3 server.  It has been running for about 3 years now with a single (default) instance.  When trying to add a named instance, it fails when it gets to the point where it is Updating System Databases - "SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration.  The error was:[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Refer to server error logs..."  We are using the local service account for both the default and new named instance.  Allow Remote Connections to This Server is enabled on the default instance.

In Services, the new SQL Server service has started, but I cannot start the SQL Server Agent - it says it started and then stopped.  I cannot access the instance with SMS.  I rebooted the server and tried the process again with identical results.  I have successfully added a new instance to my test SQL Server using the same install files. Can anyone shed some light in this issue?  Thanks.

Extracting Association Rules from Data Mining Model

Hi I have succesfully created a Data Mining Model using the Association Model. I have deployed and processed it. I need to extract all the rules that is generated by the model. I know that you normally query the model using DMX prediction queries, but in this case I need to extract the rules to a separate table for further processing. I have tried the following approaches unsuccessfully: 1. Linked server in MSSQL Management Studio. DMX query using OpenQuery. The DMX query looks like this: SELECT FLATTENED NODE_CAPTION, NODE_SUPPORT, NODE_PROBABILITY, MSOLAP_NODE_SCORE FROM DataMiningModel.CONTENT WHERE NODE_TYPE = 8   On small models this method works. On larger models with many rules I receive an exception: "XML for Analysis parser: The XML for Analysis request timed out" before it was completed This always happens after 70min. I might have missed a timeout option? 2. Using SSIS to run the same DMX query as above. The method is presented here: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/MDX/64697/ This method works on small models. On larger models that did not work with method 1, it return rules. The number of rules returned is sometimes different for the same package run multiple times. For the largest models it simply returns 0 rules. I suspect that the same XML Parser error happens under the hood of SSIS. I'm currently stuck, and need some inp

Mining Model - Business user's view

Using BIDS, when I create a Mining model solution I can see lot's of useful utilities like Mining Model viewer, Mining Model Prediction etc that comes with lot's of graphs' etc. What would be the best approach to display these graph's to business users. Can I do this easily using SSRS/PowerPivot etc..

Instance and Default connection properties on SQL Server 2005

We had a sql server fail and I have been having troubles.  I compared the connection properties on the server properties and noticed that multiple default settings are no longer set.  So I'm wondering if during the failure these could have some gotten flipped.  DB's that worked all of a sudden don't work and we had to migrate to a different instance.  I have never changed any of the setings below and wonder what impact they would have if I changed them back to the default of an installed instance? ansi warning is checked ansi padding is checked ANSI NULLS is checked arithmetic abort is checked quoted identified is checked No Count is checked concat null yields null is checked Could anyone tell me how clearing these checked options will impact my db?   -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCITP: Enterprise Administrator MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, Vista, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 http://www.pbbergs.com    Twitter @pbbergs Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in starting the Process for the User

Could someone help with this please? I'm using VWD 2010 to build a new web site - I tried to add a new database file but it won't do it. I started by clicking on the folder 'App_Data', then right clicking and selecting 'Add new item' - after that I tried to add an SQL Server Database but received this message...  'Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in starting the Process for the User Instance' What does this mean? How do I start the 'Process for the User Instance'?  I imagined all that was done for me at the install stage, when I installed VWD2010, but it appears not.  Thank you for any help at all.    Regards

Issue with contacting named instance

Hi. I'm having problem with connecting to the named instance of SQL Server. The machine runs Windows 2008 x64 and SQL Server 2008 Std SP1+CU7. It holds 3 instances of service: default, and 2 named ones. We have 2 networks in our company. All instances can be contacted from the 1st localization (the one, which is local to the SQL), but the named instance cannot be contacted form the remote localization. What's amazing, users can connect to the default instance, but when they try to reach the named one, they receive message: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) "Remote" users have permissions to the named instance - I've given them sysadmins to test, they can ping the SQL box and all works fine from the "local" network. Client is Win7+SSMS 2008. Please help.

named instance sql server 2008 install on cluster

I have a production two-node cluster with sql server 2008 sp1 cu7 running over windows server 2008 sp2. If I were to install a new named instance on this live environment, would it impair the default sql server instance functionality? I'm not referring to processor/io while the install is in progress. My question specifically is would the install process by its nature bring down the default instance. I'm pretty sure it won't, but don't see any documentation that would confirm this. thanks.

Best Practices for WPF Single Instance with named pipes?

Hi, I've developed a WPF server-hub-typed application, and a bunch of client-typed applications. The hub app is always a single instance (using mutex), and implements named pipes.   However, I'm having problem with the clients. The clients are applications that send data to the hub. They need to start the hub if it is not already running.   The problem with these clients is, they are optional and portable. Hence, the user might store them in different locations on their system. I really do not wish to deploy the Hub application with every client. What's the best way for me to implement this?   Another thing, do I *have* to use Process.Start(path, args) to start my hub application?    I've attached a sample project that I've done. But there are several problems with it, which I've not figured out how to fix. http://www.sendspace.com/file/ykhdg0   Thanks Min Chew   [References I've used:] http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/maxim/archive/2010/02/13/single-instance-application-manager.aspx <-- This is the one that seems the most promising (single instance + IPC), but I want a bare-minimum example so I can get a better hang on things. Besides, it crashes when I click on any of the 3 Run buttons http://www.switchonthecode.com/tutorials/wcf-tutorial-basic-interprocess-communication <-- Named pipe IPC using wcf http://www.switchonthec

SQL Server 2005 Standard edition install fails; An instance with the same name.../

Good Morning

I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 onto Windows Server 2003 Small Business Edition. Previously SQL Server 2000 from the SBE disk was installed, automatic updates are enabled.

I have selected the default instance and everything I try results in the error:

An instance with the same name is already installed on this computer. To proceed with SQL Server Setup, provide a unique instance name.

Log file says;

Add instance to SQL 2005 cluster

Here is my current setup

2 node cluster with 5 SAN disks

I have 2 SQL Network names setup with 1 SQL instance on each

M:\   500GB

N:\   100GB

O:\   250GB

P:\   100GB

I would like to create another instance called

PRODSQL2K5\MSSQLSERVER_2 using disks M:\ and N:\

Is this possible and is there a document I can follow.  I ran thru the setup, but it wants me to create a new virtual name or can I add this thru the cluster management software.  The servers are running Server 2008 Enterprise and I am running SQL 2005 Enterprise

OWC11 Nightmare!!! Can't Install Named Instance

I'm being driven demented by OWC11! Please help before they take me away! I'm trying to install a new named instance of SQL 2005 Enterprise 64 bit on a box which already has a default instance patched to SP3.

Setup barfs at the OWC11 stage and it complains about missing files I can't even find in the installation media. I have absolutely no idea what to do now. I tried uninstalling / reinstalling OWC11 but to no avail.

My boss thinks installing a new instance is simple and he'll think I'm an idiot if I can't resolve this. He may be right of course but I'm stuck.

Is this a bug? Sure smells like one. Will this go away at SQL 2008?

Sorry to dump a lot of text but here's the OWC setup log -

How to use Named Pipes for Inter Process Communication and transfer of lots of data?

I guess I have posted my question at the wrong place before:

So hopefully somebody in this forum can advise me on how to make my code work properly. Here's what I did:

I created a Windows service that opens a named pipe to receive data from an external application. Latter one connects and transfers up to 250 MB of data via a named pipe after it serialized a LIST of objects.

My windows service deserializes the data back into a LIST of objects, processes them and outputs the entire list into a file.

My issues are:

1.The data transfer is extremely slow! 200 MB take about 7 minutes via named pipe vs. 20 seconds if a file is used.
QUESTION: is it possible to speed up the data transfer somehow?

2.After my Windows service based processing is done I dispose the named pipe, clear the list and even call GC.Collect() but still my service is not releasing the memory.

3.Also I continue to have very high CPU load (98%) on all cores (2xQuad-core) although the service is not doing anything.
 It would be great if somebody could advise me on some of the p

Optimizing Data Mining processing time for a Time Series model in SQL Server 2008 R2

Does anyone have any references around optimizing the initial processing time for a data mining model? Books, blogs, etc. I have the Wiley “Data Mining with SQL Server 2008” book, and while I’ve learned a lot from it, it doesn’t seem to cover much around trouble shooting things like processing time. I also have a few other books that have a chapter or two on data mining, but again just basic “here’s what it is and how to set it up”, nothing that quite covers trouble shooting or optimization. I’ve also checked out the various Data Mining blogs/sites.

I’ve got a Microsoft Time Series model I’m basing on a Cube. Very simple, trying to forecast sales. I have one dimension which is the list of products (about 1600), a second which is the time dimension, finally the measure is daily sales figures for each, about 3.2 million rows in total. On a brand new server, with two quad core processors and 16 gig of ram it took 40 hours to process. Seems rather high?

CASES & CONTENT of a Decision Tree Mining Model in One View

I would like to have a SQL view that presents both the CASES & CONTENT of the decision tree mining model in one view. Meaning - the view shall consist of the following fields: Node_Name, The Column to Predict, Unique Number (or Key) of a case, and input features of the case. Here is an example:

  Node_Name        | Key |   Column to Predict   | Input1 | Input2 | Input3 |...

0000000000101      |57|

0000000000101     |372|

0000000000100     |118|

0000000000100      |52|

0000000000100     |623|

000000000010000  |41|

000000000010000 |205|

I'm familiar with queries such as those:

FROM OPENQUERY(AnalysisServer,
'SELECT * FROM [MyMiningModel].Cases

FROM OPENQUERY(AnalysisServer,
AS Dmx

I wish that there was a way to present the information in one view.

[.Net 4, Named Pipes, Single-instance app] Critique the code, please

The code below is a prototype of single-instance component. Of course there's a lot of work to get it done: separate into an component, add different names per user session, run server in background thread and so on and so on.

Currently, I'm interested in finding wrong options supplied, invalid usages, security holes or anything I missed. E.g. I'm almost sure there's a bug: the code allows for remote connections. I'll prove it on monday, as I've no access to local network for now.

using System;
using System.IO;
using System.IO.Pipes;
using System.Security.AccessControl;
using System.Security.Principal;

namespace ProcessSingleInstance
 class Program
  static void Main(string[] args)
   string[] data = new[] { "a", "aaaaa", "qweqeqweqeqweqwert" };
