abstract away the source of the connection string using a class with a static property.

ASP.NET provides a configuration system we can use to keep our applications flexible at runtime. In this article we will examine some tips and best practices for using the configuration system for the best results.

The element of a web.config file is a place to store connection strings, server names, file paths, and other miscellaneous settings needed by an application to perform work. The items inside appSettings are items that need to be configurable depending upon the environment, for instance, any database connection strings will change as you move your application from a testing and staging server into production.

Let's abstract away the source of the connection string using a class with a static property.

Category attribute of user control property does not work correctly in categories tab.

I have a User Control (ascx) and a property which a want to display in my categories tab in Visual Studio in the category named "Styles".

[Category("Styles"), DefaultValue(""), Description("The value for formating something.")]
public String MyFormatProperty
set { /* the code for set */; }
get { /* the code for get */; }

And here is the problem: Actually I do not need a get, because I only have to set the property (write only property). But when I omit the get, the property is displayed in the "Misc" category in the categories tab in Visual Studio. Only when I code the get as well, then the property is displayed correctly in the "Styles" category in the categories tab in Visual Studio.

Does anybody know why? How can I display the category correctly only with set?

Thanks, S.

Most data-driven Web sites are used as interfaces to collect, process, and summarize information. Reports that summarize the data can be presented to the user in a variety of formats-the most common way is to display the report directly in a Web page.

How do I generate proxy class for webservice with no WSDL published?

 Hello, I need to utilize following web service: https://www.icds.att.com/xmlrequest Service publishes 2 XML files (one for Request and another for Response) https://www.icds.att.com/schemas/XMLRequest.xsd and https://www.icds.att.com/schemas/XMLResponse.xsd. I generated classes for those manually, but my question is how do I actually utilize web service (generate proxy file) in this case. Do I have to code everything manually?

XmlSerializer - how to define class to not generate attributes in root element?

Hi! I have simple class that I serialize to xml file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <MyRootElement xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" Area="East">   <Products>     <SalesProduct Taxable="true">       <Name>Sofa</Name>     </SalesProduct>     <Product>       <Name>Television</Name>     </Product>   </Products> </MyRootElement> I don`t want have in xml file attributes xmlns:xsi and xmlns:xsd. MouseUp event not firing on ActivityDesigner class?

I have a custom control derived from ActivityDesigner.  I'm basically retemplating the contol to give it a stylized look and feel ... I want to add the ability to change the Display Name by swapping out the TextBlock with a TextBox on MouseUP - but this event is not firing. I can handle the MouseDown event and it works OK, except it enters the Edit mode when dragging the activity around.  Is the MouseUp handled at the base level?  Is there a way to work around this?

SelectMethod property missing from DomainDataSource class

I have an issue using WCF RIA with ASP.NET. I can't find the SelectMethod property of the Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls.DomainDataSource class. What happened to this property? Am I using the wrong class?  I'm using VS2010 with the latest versions of Silverlight 4 Tools and RIA Services Toolkit installed. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Simon

Can serialize but not deserialize class containing an xs:list attribute using XmlSerializer

I have a simple serializable class along the lines of: [Serializable] [XmlType] public class MyClass { [XmlAttribute("values")] public int[] Values { get; set; } } If I create an instance of this class with Values set to an empty collection the XmlSerializer class produces this output as expected: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16" ?> <MyClass xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" values="" /> However, deserializing this exact output throws a System.FormatException: Input string was not in a correct format. Shouldn't the XmlSerializer be able to deserialize this, since it produced the xml string in the first place?

Retrieve attribute with property name

What is the best way to obtain an attribute such as the DisplayNameAttribute of a model's property using the property's name. I am using the following method currently:((System.ComponentModel.DisplayNameAttribute)typeof(MyApp.Models.ModelFoo).GetProperty("Foo").GetCustomAttributes(typeof(System.ComponentModel.DisplayNameAttribute), true)[0]).DisplayName Looking at this long statement, I cannot help wondering if there is a better way to do it.

Generate the event handler of a control directly in the markup view ?

Hi there, I was wondering if there is a way to generate the event handler of a control directly in the markup view and not in the design view. Thanks.

Pass an Event handler to an helper class

I have a static class (an helper class) which has the responsability to create control and add them to a panel passed by parameter, this method is used by a lot of  user control. My problem is to create a linkbutton and define the click event handler which is not in the static class but is defined in the class which call this method. Following you find the exampleI have a static class (an helper class) which has the responsability to create control and add them to a panel passed by parameter, this method is used by a lot of user control.My problem is to create a linkbutton and define the click event handler which is not in the static class but is defined in the class which call this method.Following you find the example:public static class myHelper { public static AddControlToPanel(Panel p) { LinkButton l = new LinkButton(); l.Text = "Click"; l.CommandArgument = "click"; l.Click += Manage_CLick //Manage_Click is a method of the "caller" class p.controls.add(l); } } public class MyuserControl() { public void InitializePanel() { Panel mainPanel = new Panel(); myHelper.AddControlToPanel(mainPanel) } public void Manage_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { //Do something } }How can I pass the handler to the static class? I have to use delegate? how?Best regards--Andrea

Basics of Attribute class and codeaccess security

    I am using code access security for my methods which are in a class library and hosted in ASP.Net process. The attribute class checks for some values in Session and sets the principalpermission appropriately. The method works fine allowing only valid threads to pass thru and exceute the method. But the problem is this happes only once and for every subsequent aspx calls does not hit the attribute class. (I guess CLR optimizes it). My problem is if the session has a different value then the attibute should behave appropriately. Now, it takes new value from Session only when I recycle my asp process and happens only once for the request. IS there a way to circumvent this? Any suggestions?

Class Property, using Set

My class uses a dataset and a property to "get" and "set" the rows in a SQL table called GROUPS into a class table called tblGroups.  In my constructor I select the contents of the GROUPS datatable and use the "Set" code in the property to populate tblGroups as follows"

Here is the property in the class:

    Private tblGroups As DataTable = New DataTable

    Public Property Groups() As DataTable
            Groups = tblGroups
        End Get
        Set(ByVal value As DataTable)
            tblGroups = value
        End Set
    End Property

Constructor Code:

Groups = ds.Tables("Groups")

When instantiating a new class object the set code above does a fine job of loading any existing records into my tblGroups table.  Now I wish to add additional records into that table.  What is the best way to accomplish this?

  • Do I need to create a seperate method to handle this, or should I change the existing "set" code somehow?
  • If the answer is to change the "set" code, can I add additional byVal variables?
  • If so, then how do I accomplish that without c
