WSS 3.0 "Unable to connect to database." from other computers only

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 10, 2011    Points: 0   Category :C#

Hi everybody,

I have a strange problem with recently installed WSS 3.0…

I can navigate to the site from front end server, but when I am on any other machine I receive “Unable to connect to database.  Check database connection information and make sure the database server is running.”  error. In event log I see “Cannot connect to SQL Server. MYSQLSERVERNAME not found. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below.  [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

This message is logged only when user tries to reach the site from another machine. When I try this from front end server it works OK and there is no error in event log.

Due to our specific situation WSS was configured to use sql authentication for connecting to database.

What could be wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Controls appear as different sizes on two different computers

Hello, i've got a very strange problem. I've noticed that when i build a windows form, some of the controls appear as different sizes depending on the machine on which they are running. For instance, if a text box is 200 long on one PC, it will display as 50 long on another. Has anyone experienced this problem in the past?

Use of "Select Users, Computers, or Groups" dialog box

Dear all, Currently i am trying to create a website with domain login using Visual Studio 2010 and ASP.net 4.0 . I had a table in SQL that keep track of users with rights to enter this website based on thier employee number. The administration role to maintain this rights table will be given to some non-IT department users via the website and i wish to make use of the "Select Users, Computers, or Groups" dialog box for these users to add any new user to the rights table. I have 2 main reason to use the "Select Users, Computers, or Groups" dialog box if possible. 1- Allows the administrator is search and add users easily. 2- Retrieve information of the new users like employee number, employee name, email address without much validation in the web.   Can someone enlighten me on what are the references that i need like Active directory and how to pop up this dialog box and retrieving information from it as well using the web? Thank you in advance Signed Rhico

Cannot Access Reports from Computers Within Network

I am able to access reports from my computer that has the SQL Server (2008) installed, but can't seem to access from other computers in the network. All I get is

"The permissions granted to user 'MyComputerName\Guest' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)"

Can someone please help?

I tried creating user "MyComputerName\Guest" and assign permission to view reports, but still cannot get it to work. Am I doing something wrong?

Here are some details from my Report Services Configuration Manager

Service Account is set up to Use built-in account : Network Service

Current Report Server Database

SQL Server Name : MyComputerName\ServerName

Database Name : ReportServer$ServerName

Report Server Mode : Native

Current Report Server Database Credential

Credential : SQL Account

Does a SQL Server Compact 4.0 database support simultaneous access from different computers?

For example, if an sdf file is on a network server, could two network clients running SQL Server Compact 4.0 access the file at the same time?

This was not possible using SQLCE 3.5. I'm wondering if it's been added to 4.0 (so that it brings back the one advantage of using an Access db.)

SharePoint 2010 calendar synch with MAC computers/Entourage

Is it possible to sync a SharePoint 2010 calendar with Entourage for MAC users?

Do 32 bit apps work on 64 bit computers?

I work on a website and want a friend to help.  He has a 64 bit laptop.  So I told him to download visual web developer express (2010) and install it.  It doesn't install.  I suggested that this is due to his 64 bit computer.

Also, I've written several utilities that I've compiled in Visual C# 2010 express on a 32 bit computer, and I want him to be able to run them.  Will the 64 bit vs 32 bit difference mean that they cannot run?

Unable to connect to Database | ASP.NET Membership and Entity Framework

Ok, so this is my first Solution using the Entity Framework (EF). Here are my steps so far:

1) Created Database named: BSA with an owner of username/password (AspNetServicesUser/password)
2) Created Entity Data Model (EDM) in a separate project (contained within the same solution)
3) Created an ASP.NET Web Application with basic functionality (new project within the same solution)
4) Added Reference to the EDM in Web App and added Connection String to the EF
5) Decided I wanted ASP.NET Membership added to the Web App
6) Configured SQL Server for Application Services using aspnet_regsql.exe on BSA database

Now, I need to know:
a) How do I create the connectionString for the Web.config file in the WebApp?

Errors I receive:

I get this error using the ASP.NET Configuration Tool under the "Security" Tab:

Login failed for user 'AspNetServicesUser'.

I get this error using the ASP.NET Configuration Tool under the "Provider" Tab --> Select a single provider for all site management data --> Test

Could not establish a connection to the database.

If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database

What does the sqlcmd -L switch's "locally configured server computers" mean?

Now sure if this is the right place to post this but... I’m looking for each of the installed instances of SQL Server on my network. I have already been pointed to sqlcmd –L, which gives back a list of what are called “locally configured server computers,” but I don’t know what that means. Is a ‘server computer’ a machine running SQL Server—which is what I’m looking for—or can a machine be a ‘server computer’ without having anything to do with SQL Server.

If these “locally configured server computers” do turn out to be SQL Server machines is there any way to poll them to determine what flavor of SQL Server they are running? (I want the info in order to aid in the decision about whether or not to buy some kind of SQL Server multiple-user or volume deal with Microsoft.)

Large log file and unable to connect to database

I'm running SBS2008 and my SharePoint Config log is taking up 11.27Gb. I've
run into this issue before and was able to resolve it, but I cannot connect
to this database from the SQL Server Management Studio Express console.
When I open the console, I have to connect to the database by entering
\\.\pipe\mssql$microsoft##ssee\sql\query for the Server name. From there,
if I try to go to the properties of the SharePoint_Config database, I get
the following error:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
Cannot show requested dialog.
Cannot show requested dialog. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SqlMgmt)
Property Owner is not available for Database
'[SharePoint_Config_29c26fca-17b8-48c1-9704-b869932abcb6]'. This property
may not exist for this object, or may not be retrievable due to insufficient
access rights. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Rich Text don't work on several computers

In SharePoint 2010, we have a simple news pages. In several computers, the Rich Text Box was blocked (in gray), and can't write on it. It happends on IE 6, 7, 8 and FireFox. I thing it's a problem with JavaScript, but in some other computers work.

We checked antivirus, firewals, configuration, add site to the Trusted Sites ("Sitios de confianza" in spanish), and check several configurations.

Any suggestion?

Un saludo! Juan Segura

WPF application crashes on touch screen computers

We have an application that crashes on a touch screen application.  The error is:

it occurs right after our

I searched online and tried the programs and features...turn windows features on and off and disabled the Tablet PC components.

Now our application works.

So it appears the issue is that with touch enabled you have that window that hovers allowing for text input via a stylus or finger.  That windows must cause WPF app's to crash.

I need the users to be ablet o write (via stylus) into our text boxes.

Any ideas
