SharePoint 2010 Cumulative Update - Install sequence - Foundation required or not?

For a SharePoint 2010 Server (not Foundation) environment, is it necessary to install the Foundation Cumulative Update as well as the Server Cumulative Update?  (In the same way that with 2007, you install the WSS update and then the MOSS update) The nearest I have found to an answer is here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sharepoint/ff800847.aspx where it says 'We recommend that you always install SharePoint Foundation 2010 patches before installing SharePoint Server 2010 patches. This best practice ensures that you will always be successful when installing updates.'   In this regard, should 2010 Foundation be thought of as a pre-req, or underlying component, for 2010 Server?   The same question applies to the use of the Updates folder in the install media - for a Server install, should we be extracting both the Foundation and Server Cumulative Updates there, for a correct slipstreamed install?   Thanks.   Rob

Cannot install Sharepoint Server 2010 "A previous installation has been detected with a license type

I'm trying to upgrade to Team Foundation Server 2010 and Project Server 2010. After getting TFS 2010 and Project Server 2007 to work with WSS 3.0, I started upgrade to Project Server 2010 which requires update to Sharepoint Server 2010 Enterprise. I installed pre-requisites and run "stsadm -o preupgradecheck" which passed everything. When I tried to run the installation I get Setup Warning "A previous installation has been detected with a license type that does not match the install in progress". I thought that my trial licence for Project Server 2007 stopped this so I completely uninstalled WSS 3.0 and restarted the server but the installation still stops with Upgrade window. Any ideas? .Netframework update wil not install

Hello. I am NOT a technical person. I work for a non profit organization and we have been getting automatic update popups fro months regarding an update to .netframework. Every time I tell it to install, it tells me it has not been installed. I keep getting the popups. I do not know if I need this update, or not. I do not know what it is for. I have never seen it on any of my computers at home. And I do not know if I am vulnerable here without having it. But there is no error message. It just says >> Some Updates Could Not Be Installed: MICROSOFT .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework  3.5 Family Update  for .NET versions  2.0 through 3.5  (KB951847) x86. Can anybody tell me if I need this? And if not, how to get rid of the pop ups? And if so, how to make it install? In a NON-TECHNICAL W PLEASE!!!   Also, would appreciate an email response to gotcc@optimum.net (I have no idea if I will be able to get back into this site again.) Thank you kindly!!!

SQL*Server 2008 SP1 applied but still tries to download and install from Windows Update

I had previously posted this on the windows update forum and was advised here was more appropriate. I have installed SQL*Server Express 2008 on laptop with windows7 and appled the SP1 update. This shows as applied correctly when looking at programs/updates from control panel, update logs. The management console confirms version 10.1.2531 is running. Each time I use windows update  the service pack is listed as needing download / install - the same KB968369 is given as the reference. I have run this a couple of times but the update is shown as outstanding each time. Any ideas how to resolve this? Thanks Colin

When attempting to install "Security Update Microsoft for the Microsoft 2007 Office system updates (updates KB2277947 and KB982331)" the sintallation fails and then I recieve the error "The detection failed, this can be due to a corrupted installation database". System Info: XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.60 GHz I am running XP and have installed and run the "Fit It" tool, to no avail. I even tried downloading each update individually, from the Microsoft site, instead of through the automatic update. I also read this same question posted by another user (link: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointadmin/thread/cfa66cd3-2aa2-44ee-9393-ffae41d4f70c/) only to find his info contained no answer either. How do I fix this so that I can get these updates installed?

Removing remants of previous install

I have a remnant of a previous install of SQL Server (circa 2000) that is preventing me from installing 2008 r2. There is no evidence of an installed version in either my menu of programs or the list generated in Control Panel/Add Remove Progs. However, there is an icon in my taskbar for the SQL Server Service Manager. When I trigger it, a dialog box opens up. The top drown box for Server is empty. The next drop down box for Services is empty. None of the command buttons (start, pause, stop) will run because "This service control action cannot be completed as no service has been selected." There are no services in either drop down box to be selected. In the lower left corner of the Service Manager dialog box is the message "Not connected - \\". When I run the configuration check prior to installing 2008 r2, it fails at the consistency check, indicating that there is another version of SQL Server installed. The Help provided advises that this other version must be removed before 2008 r2 can continue. Does anyone out there have a suggestion as to how I can try to "get to" a previous install of this nature, in order to get rid of it? I'm running XP Pro on a Dell Dimension 8400 workstation. Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide. John

Problem installing Cumulative Update 6 for SQL 2008 SP1 on Windows XP

I am attempting to apply SQL Server 20008 SP1 Cumulative Update 6 on my Windows XP desktop. The update executable is unpacked and I get a brief flash of a Command Screen and then nothing. I have searched for any update files but have not found any. My Desktop Configuration: Windows XP SP3, Windows Installer 4. SQL Server 2008 SP1 Developer Edition. I am also attempting to install the Client Tools for SQL 2008R2 on this same desktop and am getting the same results. I click on SETUP and get a brief flash of the Command Screen and the installation does not continue. Internet searches speak of a problem with a registry entry in the Boostrap Key for a valid Setup directory, but this key exists in my desktop registry. Thanks,

Cumulative Update Webcasts

Is Microsoft planning to have CU webcasts (like Project/Project Server) to describe the CUs in more detail and allow Q & A?  It is VERY useful and informative.BT

Version not changed after installing Cumulative Update

I installed the August Cumulative Update, but the version number didn't update on my system.  The install processed successfully (at least no errors showed up).  How do I confirm the installation?

Thank you.

try to reinstall .NET 4, error I need to install WIC, that fails with error update.exe not valid

trying to do a clean install of .NET v4, installation starts then stops with a fatal error.  I look at the log file, this is where it hangs up:

So I follow the link in the log file, when trying to install WIC I get the "update\update.exe is not a valid Win32 Application".

I can not find any info on how to fix this.

2005 SP3 Cumulative Update

I noticed that cu should apply to affected system that with specific issues with fixes.  cu4 contains fix that allow to use "Locked pages in memory".  Is that safe to apply cu just for that?

Cumulative Update 5 - wrong SQL 2008 version number

Hi all,

I installed Service Pack 1 for SQL 2008 on one of my servers. This server has multiple instances. In this case, it is the instance "SHAREPOINT2010" that is giving me difficulties.

For Sharepoint 2010, we need to install cumulative update 5. This update fails due to the fact I do not have the correct SQL version. It is expecting version 10.0.2531 (SP1), but it says I have the 10.0.1600 (RTM). When I check in my management studio and via the @@version, I do see the confirmation I have version 10.0.2531. (also see attached screenshot).

Does anyone know why the cumulative update fails to see the correct server version ? If I try to install it on another SQL 2008 SP1, it works fine..;

Thank you !
