How can I stop MOSS search services without deleting the index?

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 10, 2011    Points: 0   Category :C#

We want move our search database to a different drive on the same database server.  In order to do this, we need all the SharePoint things that would connect to that database to be off.  I see there is an stsadm command for stopping search but it looks like this would have the same effect as using the Central Admin site--it would basically be the equivalent of uninstalling it.  While I realize it is easy to uninstall and reinstall, the index of crawled content is pretty big and it would take some time to rebuild the index completely.

Short of shutting down the SharePoint farm while we make the database move, how can you stop the SharePoint services that connect to the search database?

If we stop all of the app pools and all of the windows services related to SharePoint, will this accomplish the objective?  So far at this point, it seems to me that the safest way to handle this would be to simply shut down the farm servers while we do the db maintenance and restart them when it is done.

Can I shut down wss search services on my MOSS box?

On Moss 2007, there are two search services WSS and MOSS. As Moss search provides all functions from WSS, can I shut down WSS search services?

Search Server Gatherer - Custom hierarchical protocol handler ISearchProtocol for MOSS 2010

Search server gatherer calls CloseAccessor() and shutdown() on ISearchProtocol after GetChunk() even if the FILTER_E_END_OF_CHUNKS is not returned. After calling shutdown() it stops calling the createaccessor() with new URL. I want to create a hierarchical indexing but I am not gatherer is not suporting this. The same piece of code is working fine in MOSS 2007, I am facing this issue in MOSS 2010 only. Is there anything changed in MOSS 2010 which is creating this issue?

Deleting items from the index (custom protocol handler)

I created a custom protocol handler. I successfully emit entries into the index. I just can't seem to delete them during an incremental crawl.

I tried:

1. no emitting child item during the enumeration of child entries in a folder
2. returning PRTH_E_OBJ_NOT_FOUND from CreateAccessorEx

doing either 1, 2, or both did nothing. The entries are still there.

what i need to do to delete these entries from the index during an incremental crawl?

Ingest google Search Index into Sharepoint 2007

Hi Folks

I am wondering  if there is a way to ingest google search index into SharePoint index such that when people search via SharePoint they see the Google results too… incorporated/federated inline with the SP results (not as a separate "box" ).

We have Google search in our environment and also share-point search. Share-point search for sharepoint site but Google search is for all other environments. Now i am thinking if we ingest the Google search index into share-point then may be its great deal to provide user a platform to search everything on one place.

Customizing Search Results page in MOSS

The Search Results page in MOSS seems to list the results as links by default. My customer asked me if I could customize the search results so that they show in a data view web part. Is this possible?

Attempting to install a Reporting Services for MOSS 2007

I am tasked with writing reports for existing MOSS 2007, for that i am doing a test installation and test connection to a test moss server (copy of the main one)

So, i have a already set and running MOSS 2007. I am following theese tutorials

But in my case, i have only two machines - one with main site moss and one with reporting services and sql for reporting services.

So far, i have installed SQL server, installed moss and reporting services on the reporting services machine.

I joined my moss into the existing farm successfully.

I've set up reporting services according to the tutorial (Except i use an account provided by test server administrator, which has all rights granted, since we dont bother with least privellege here, not a very big company...)

But when i check the /reportingservices page i see an error (its in russian) that teh server is wrongly configured. rsServerConfigurationError is the kind of error.

The tutorial said that i should see a blank page at this point. I will continue tutorial futher tomorrow (work day ends now

QueryEx (Search) results and Custom Page Index

Hi All,

I done a web part which allow the user to query the search.asmx. It return the result fine against which I apply some xslt. However I need a mean to create a Page index. I only return the result based on a range defined in the query.

I need somehow to obtain the number of result the search is returning in total against what I only want to display on the screen.

The only way I sort of figure to do that is by first make a search just to obtain the number of result it will return in total and then make a search defining a range.

Has someone done something similar?

Windows SharePoint Services 3 Search Event ID 2424

This error started on 29 April and I cannot get rid of it...  My search works fine, both site and people.  AD profile import works fine.  Full and incremantal crawls work as scheduled.  Just that this error keeps showing up every five minutes in one of two WFE's.  The other WFE does not receive this error

I have verified all Security Configuration/Service Accounts, verified all Services on Server/Search accounts, Stopped/Restarted all search, and verified SSP accounts.  The last thing I did was verify there was an indexer attached to the SSP...

I set the diagnostic logging to verbose and the only thing that stood out around the time of the error was

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Invalid object name 'AR_CacheCounters'.

SqlError: 'Invalid object name 'AR_CacheCounters'.'    Source: '.Net SqlClient Data Provider' Number: 208 State: 1 Class: 16 Procedure: 'proc_ar_GetCacheInvalidationCountersWithCount' LineNumber: 3 Server: 'SERVER'

Any suggestions?

Cannot start wss search in MOSS farm

MOSS farm: 1 index, 1 WFE,  SQL cluster

When we try to start the wss search service from the web UI we gat a 'system policies must have full control' message. I can start it manually but the app log is full of event ID's 6482:

Application Server Administration job failed for service instance Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.SearchServiceInstance (da839862-de1b-4d3e-9015-3f23999ad32a).

Reason: System policies must have Full Control.

There is an additional similar event (event ID 6483) that we also see regularly in the event log concerning Excel services:

Notify, SQL server services stop

Search content of different languages in one language of MOSS

Hi, Hope you guys can help to answer this Search question. E.g. English MOSS is installed, content in English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Japanese are input to the system (either in Word/Excel file, ASPX page, Blog entry or Wikis page). In this case, how can the user search content by entering search keywords in languages other than English? The reason I ask this question is that: MOSS Search Engine uses English work-breaker/stemmer in the crawling and query process in MOSS English Version. Then, it cannot distinguish which languages are being crawled, e.g. pretending Japanese and Chinese as English when crawling the content. Is there any advanced way to solve this issue in MOSS 2007, besides installing various languages of MOSS in different servers? This problem exists in SharePoint 2003, so now I wonder if there is any improvement in 2007. As you know this is especially important in HK environment. Every customer ask the same question in Pre-Sales demo. Thanks in advance. Paul

Now I decided to integrate the sql server report services into sharepoint and did some research and found some articles on msdn which says in order to integrate the report services into sharepoint i need to have a minimal install of moss 2007 on server hosting report services (correct me if i am wrong). since i have only 2 servers i decided to install the minimal installation of moss 2007 on my server 1 ( Web front end only ). Here are the steps i followed for it Installed .NET framework 3.0 Installed moss 2007 sp2 Installed october cumuilative update for wss then same for moss 2007. Installed .net framework 2.0 NDP20-KB913384-X86.exe hot fix. and then ran the psconfig from command line as psconfig -cmd configdb -connect -server <SQLServerName> -database SharePoint_Config_ <dbname> -user <domainusername> -password <passw

Is there a way to make SPS 2003 search fields search the MOSS indexes?

Here's my situation: We're doing a gradual migration from SPS to MOSS. Can anyone tell me if there's an easy way to make the SPS search fields search the MOSS indexes? The easiest way I can think of is to great a web part for SPS which will gather the scope and search param and redirect the user to the MOSS search result page. If there's an easier way. I'm all ears.

Weird Issue with the MOSS Search : FileExtension metadata object type instead of string

Hello, We 've got a strange issue with the search and especially with the FileExtension metadata. when we make a query on the search engine, we receive for the FileExtension metadata an unexcpected result. here is a printscreen showing the issue. http://cid-53eee937847a625e.photos.live.com/self.aspx/Public/Untitled.jpg as you can see the Type of the FileExtension is object and it should be string and I checked the type of the object and it's System.String[] the element at the index 0 contains the value! what's wrong ? thx in advance

MOSS Search Not Returning Results from A List

Hello All,   Problem: The MOSS Search is not returning results from a subsite (and list within it). It however returns results for most of the other sites in the web application. Environment: 2 Application Servers. One of these is the index and query server. The same server is also the search server for the content databases. 5 web front end servers. Other Notes: The MOSS installation has several web applications. We however have one site within it that is not returning the required results. The results that we are looking for are located in a particular list. When one searches against the items in the list, some appear and others do not. We also get results from RSS feeds that track changes to the list in the last week. Also, some of the results returned are links to the new item in the list (that is, when you click on new to create a new item). There are no search errors in the application log. The web application was recently upgraded from WSS 3.0 on a single server to MOSS 2007 in a server farm. There are no sql index errors. The WSS Search and Office Search Services are working and have been restarted. The credentials have also been re-entered. We get less than 20 errors in the crawl logs (out of close to 800k docs). I have checked the rights for the default content access account, and it has dbo rights to the content db and search db. It also has read (and now admin
