Office: Relive the Moment by Searching Your IM Logs with Custom Research Services

Often, IM conversations contain important information you'd like to keep and reuse. Fortunately, MSN Messenger 6.2 has a feature to keep a conversation history permanently in XML format. This article shows you how to leverage that conversation history by consolidating IM exchanges so they are indexed, searchable, and ultimately reusable using the Microsoft Office 2003 Research and Reference task pane.

SQL User Permission (No answer found by searching)

Hello all!   I'm hoping someone will be able to answer my simple question!   Previously, I've run the below script to give one user access to their db in SQL management studio but nothing else. use [someDB] -- use the real db name go sp_changedbowner 'theUser' -- use the new username go 4. Next, deny the new user "public" access to ALL databases: use master go deny VIEW any DATABASE to theUser go   However I now need to add an additional user with view on permissions to the database and can't figure out how to do it. I'm sure it's simple but my SQL knowledge is at a low level.   Many thanks, Lee.

Searching plain-text files.

Hello, I was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction toward implementing a page in my Web Form application that would be able to allow a user to search a text file which originally exists on a Window File share. Once the user searches for their text, I'd like the page to be split into two panes: One on the left that lists all the hits, each listing being a link which contains an excerpt of text around the link. And another pane on the right which shows the full text document with all the hits highlighted. Now, should I be loading the text file into a data base and be using something like Lucence .NET to search? Or is there a library of controls that can do all this for me already?By searching around the internet I've found bits and pieces of solutions to this problem, such as how to highlight result hits: http://www.knowdotnet.com/articles/highlightingsearchtext.htmlAnd how to perform database searches: http://www.asp.net/sql-server/videos/enabling-full-text-search-in-your-text-dataAm I going to have to painstakingly glue all these things together and write my own solution to this? Thanks for the help in advance.

Internal Server Error Exception when Searching (in CoreResultsWebPart::OnInit)

Hello, We are encountering an "Internal server error exception" when we attempt to search. The relevant error in the ULS log is:   CoreResultsWebPart::OnInit: Exception initializing: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.     at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.WebControls.CoreResultsWebPart.SetPropertiesOnQueryReader()     at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.WebControls.CoreResultsWebPart.OnInit(EventArgs e)   This is occurring on a fresh install of SharePoint Server 2010 Standard Edition running on a single-server farm.  We have tried:   ensuring that hotfix 976462 is installed (it is) ensuring that the "SharePoint Server Search" and "Search Query and Site Settings Service" services are running (they are) removing, then reinstalling the search application (tried, but with no luck) appending ":80" to the host of portion of the search result url to see if we get a different result (we do not) ensuring that the application pool is assigned correctly (it is) restarting the timer service restarting the search service rebooting For the sake of conversation, we'll say the server is named "pharaoh". It has the following AAMs: http://pharaoh:8888, Default Zone  (Central Admin) http://pharaoh, Default Zone   All services and applicati

Searching External Data

I have created a external content type and have created a content source for it. The content source gets crawled successfully and i am able to see the search results. But the results contains the wiered URLS staring with bdc3://. I read on some forums to include following property in finder and specific finder method of the entity: <Property Name="DisplayUriField" Type="System.String">SearchUrl</Property>   I did this and imported the xml back in SharePoint and crawled the search but no luck. I also restarted the SharePoint Server Search  14 service but it also did not help.   Can anybody please help in fixing this issue so that i can see valid URLs in search results.   Thanks in advance.

Searching for custom properties in a default search

Hi all, I have added some custom properties in to Manage User Properties in my User Profile Service Application. The issue I'm having is that I'm unable to obtain search results from these properties. For example, if in the Enterprise Search / People tab I enter "Dave" and click search, then I'll be presented with results of people who's name matches "Dave". If I enter "Information Technology" then I'll get a list of all users who's department is "Information Technology". So far we're okay! But let's go back to the custom property. Let's say it's called "Clients" and it is for storing client names against the staff profiles. If I search for "Microsoft" and a user has Microsoft in their client property then no results are found. I've created the managed properties in the Metadata Property Mappings of my search service application, done full crawls but nothing. If I search for "clients:microsoft" then I get results. So the question is how do I or is it even possible to get custom metadata properties to show up in a default search? Thanks!

Slow performance when searching in "any part of field" of a SQL Server database using a Microsoft Ac

We have just migrated our back end database from Access to MS SQL Server 2008 R2. We have noticed better performance on our searches - unless we select to search in "any part of field" in Access (with Access' built-in search function - we use a mix of Access 2003 and 2007). This takes nearly 20 seconds to find the result, whereas before the migration it was taking 5-7 seconds (compared to instant results we now experience when searching for whole fields). The main fields we search are not large - usually just two words. Obviously it is better to search for a whole or start of a field, but this is not always possible. The contractor that assisted us in this project has told us that this "is just the way SQL works with Access". Is this really true? I find it hard to believe two MS products would have such a big issue between them. I presumed using SQL with an Access front end would be a common setup, which is why I thought this must be a problem with our setup. Is there any way to fix this speed issue?

Searching a NVarChar Column with multiple wildcards returns all rows

I'm building a stored procedure to return a set of records, yes nothing big. The column is an NVarchar column and I'm using a select statement of Select * from Table1 where Column1 Like @Column1 Table is currently one record containing the words:  ***Some Test Word***  Is my test word I've set the value of @Column1 to: Some - no records returned Some% - no records returned %Some% - 1 record returned  % - 1 record returned *% - no records returned %*% - 1 record returned %Not Here% - 1 record returned   Can someone tell me why if I have a leading and trailing wildcard I will get all records returned?  Does it have something to do with the '*' characters in the field because some of my users are using these characters. I've also tried changing the select to: where RTRIM(Column1) Like @Column1 with the same result and where RTRIM(Column1) Like N'%' + @Column1 with the same result   What way should I give a user the way to search for a substring inside of an NVarchar field? Oh, I tried using the Substring function and got the same result. Thanks Mike

Searching All Sites in 2010 Foundation

Searching used to work, not sure what has happened.  If I use the This Site option, it's fine, if I use the All Sites option I get a page not found error. The page it's looking for is http://sharepoint/SitePages/All%20Sites/Results.aspx?k=test&s=All%20Sites.  Do I just need to create an "All Sites" page? I have a single server installation with SQL Server 2008R2 on a Windows Server 2008R2 and it's a Foundations only installation.

Sharepoint 2010 Fast Search - Searching Document set

We have a sharepoint 2010 Fast server. We are planning to use document sets to store documents with common metadata.(Previously were using zips in moss 2007). Now, the requirement is we need to return only  document sets even if the search results contain multiple documents within that document set. ie, if we searched for a keyword that was specific to a document within the document set, the search results should return the document set and not the individual documents. Please help!!! Thanks in advance
