Using Active Directory Authentication when Windows Authentication fails

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 10, 2011    Points: 0   Category :Windows Application

I have a web application (intranet based) which uses Windows Authentication.  Unfortunately there are public computers that have public logins at some company locations.  My web app doesn't support these public logins because I need to know the user working with the app.

So, even though these public users are windows authentication users, my app will fail because I have no user account setup for that particular account.  I want to then try Active Directory Authentication.

In my Default.aspx.cs I'd have something like this:

  protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
    userContext = new UserContext(); // If the authenticated user isn't a user in my system then throw an exception
   catch (UILayerException)
          // This I where I want to now do Active Directory Authentication
          // Maybe I redirect to a login page or what?
          // But remember the user IS authenticated even if they aren't a user in my system so I need to do something about that.

Authentication With Active Directory AD Getting properties

Authentication with AD is just a call to the predefined function.. Surprised
you just need following references:Embarassed

using System.DirectoryServices;
using System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement;
using System.DirectoryServices.ActiveDirectory;

and one dll:
using UserAuthentication; //dll that you need to be download.. search for it from our god: googleWink

string adPath = "LDAP://" + System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings["DefaultActiveDirectoryServer"];
ActiveDirectoryValidator adAuth = new ActiveDirectoryValidator(adPath);
if (adAuth.IsAuthenticated(domainName, userName, password))

Active Directory user impersonation with forms authentication

I've written a small ASP.NET 3.5 application to allow users to update selected account attributes on their own. Everything works fine when I use Basic Authentication, but because the dialog that is presented is less than ideal, I'd like to use forms authentication to give the users more instruction on how to log in. My problem is that in order for the user to update their account information, I have to have the application impersonate them for the update actions. I've scoured the internet trying to find a solution to my issue, but nothing fits or works. I have tried setting the web.config:<identity impersonate="true" /> but that doesn't seem to work. I also have the C# code using the WindowsImpersonationContext class, but still no luck. protected void titleTextBox_TextChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { TextBox tb = (TextBox)sender; string fieldTitle = "job title"; string fieldName = "title"; if (userDirectoryEntry == null) CaptureUserIdentity(); try { WindowsImpersonationContext impersonationContext = userWindowsIdentity.Impersonate(); if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(tb.Text)) userDirectoryEntry.Properties[fieldName].Clear();

Changing an authentication of SharePoint site from SQL-FBA to Active Directory

Hi,      We are using MOSS 2007. I have customized a web application using Custom web part, features and ASPX pages. we have configured SQL-Form based Authentication for this site. I have also used FBA user management functionality from Codeplex. I have created some groups and my application (custom aspx page) is referencing these groups to send an email to specific person as per his role for certail events.        I have a requirement to migrate this set up on other server and change the authentication from SQL-FBA to Active Directory. So if I have to change the Authentication from SQL-FBA to AD then what are the steps I have to follow to make this happen?      I would appreciate any help on this. Thanks, Patav

LDAP - directory entry issue with out user and password using impersonate and windows authentication

Hi All I am using the below code to fetch the user information from LDAP             DirectoryEntry entry = new DirectoryEntry("LDAP://DEV");             DirectorySearcher searcher =  new DirectorySearcher(entry);             SearchResult result;             searcher.Filter = "samaccountname=testuser";             result = searcher.FindOne(); here i am using windows authentication always and along with that when i enable the impersonate = true ,  the code fails at "result = searcher.FindOne();" with message "object reference not set to instance of an object "  also with the same code if i give the username and password along with the impersonate tag >> it works  or if i am using the user and password along with the DirectoryEntry  object then also it will work  but it fails with same user that i gave in impersonate tag / directory entry object with windows authentication enabled  and the  user logged to the application and no username and password tag in directory entry / impersonate tag  Interesting thing is that  in our development server ,  i am able to execute the same code with out user name p

Passing Credentials to IIS "Integrated Windows authentication" Protected Directory

Hello All,I have set up a directory on my IIS web server that is protected by "Integrated Windows authentication".  I want visitors to be required to enter a name and password to view files in the protected directory except if they are following a link to files in the protected directory from a certain page on my website.I am doing this to try to get better protection from search engine spidering than is provided by using a robots.text file. I am using ASP.NET 3.5 with VB.  I am wondering if there is a way to pass the log on credentials to the IIS server via a link, or if there is a way to fill in the name and password for the login screen automatically, or something else that would work.  It is OK if the login name and password are visible to the visitors.Any suggestions on how to do this would be appreciated or if there is a better way to accomplish what I am trying to do, I would like to know.Thanks

SQL Server 2008 Windows Authentication Mode fails for Database Engine, error 18456

I installed SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (10.0.1600.22.080709-1414) on a Windows Vista 32-bit development machine with Windows Authentication Mode only (no SQL Server Authentication).   Since this is a development machine, I saw no need for Mixed Mode when I did the install.  The SQL Server Management Studio allows me to login to Analysis Services, Integration Services, Reporting Services, BUT NOT the Database Engine!Windows Authentication for the Database Engine gives the following error: EventID: 18456Login failed for user MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>]The 'fix' I have found online is to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine.  Unfortunately, I can't since I didn't install SQL Server Authentication mode (only Windows Authentication Mode).  It appears my only recourse is to uninstall, then reinstall in Mixed mode, then to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine. Before I do so, does anyone know of a better approach?Scott D Duncan

Active Directory Authentication with Login Control ASP.Net 3.5 or 4

Hello, I am trying to follow instructions on how to create a login page that tests against active directory.  My issue is all of the tutorials seem to be written for ASP.NET 2.0.  When I try to follow them I cannot get them to work.  Does anyone have any tutorial or information for .NET 3.5 or 4.0?

intranet site authentication against Active Directory

Hi all,

I am trying to build a web app for an intranet site that for security reasons needs to make the user type in their Windows or Active Directory username pwd manually. I have previously worked with Integrated Windows Auth but in this case, we do want them to use type in their AD credentials.

I have been trying to look up how to do this and frankly I am a bit lost. It should be a fairly straightforward task and am hoping you can point me in the right direction, with some tutorials or examples. We will be using SSL so, dont have to worry about passing pwd in cleartext over the wire.

My environment is visual studio 2008 in C#, .net 3.5 if that matters.

Any pointers ? Thank you.

Website Windows Authentication fails when enabling SQL Mixed Mode.

Hello all,

Just to describe the scenario. I have a website. This lives on a webserver. On that webserver is an SQL server. The website connects to this database using windows authentication. I have written a windows form application that connects to the SQL Server on the webserver. This application is being run from a location on out intranet. The Winform application use SQL authentication to connect to the database. The SQL Server didn't have mix mode authentication enabled. So I enabled it. The winform application could now connect to the SQL Server.

This is where it starts getting a little strange.

The Website that was already connecting find using integrated authentication starts failing with:

Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'

When you are enabling mixed mode authentication, you are adding another authentication method, why would the original Windows authentication fail?

Thanks for any suggestions and sorry if this is completely the wrong place to be asking this question,

Tomcat Windows Integrated Authentication fails with More than 1 Web Application

Hi all,

I’m using Tomcat 5.5.23 on a Windows server 2003 (64 bit).

Tomcat runs as a window service, using an Active Directory account.

DB is configured to Windows Authentication mode alone.

Tomcat contains 2 web applications.

The DLL’s (sqljdbc_auth.dll) location is the value of Tomcat’s –Djava.library.path parameter.

The container loads, the first web application loads and successfully establishes a connection to the DB,

But the second web application fails to connect to DB, prompting:

 com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: This driver is not configured for integrated authentication.

When loading tomcat with only a single web application (either one), the web application successfully connect to the DB.

This is why I don’t think the reason is at web.xml.

Any idea?

Thanks, Itamar

Web Matrix + Windows Authentication

I'm curious if its possible to get windows auth working with asp.net webpages/webmatrix.

I've got it published to IIS with windows auth turned on and anonymous/forms/basic turned off.

I'm guessing the WebSecurity Helper probably won't work here but can you access User.Identity.Name etc?

Sorry for the newbie questions, I've only just started working with asp.net ^^,
