SharePoint site response very slow

Hi, We have SharePoint web application. We are hosting it on Windows Sever 2008 along with SQL Server 2008. In the development environment the site works very smoothly. When we deployed the same on our live systems the web application because dead slow. It takes 20-30 mins to load a page and it never let anyone login from a Forms authenticated extention. The windows extention seems to be working fairly decent. I have no clue what is making the site go so slow. Thanks.--Oyshik

Can't read MTOM response

Hi Guys, I am running into a problem when trying to call a service that uses MTOM encoding.  Basically, I make the call and an error is thrown: "Client found response content type of 'multipart/related; type="application/xop+xml"; start="<soap.xml@xfire.codehaus.org> "; start-info="text/xml";               boundary="----=_Part_413761_448939451.1284410234193"', but expected 'text/xml'." Since my app is defaulted to text/xml I change my config using the WSE tool so that it will be able to accept MTOM responses, however trying the call again continues to throw that same error.  Here is my config: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <configuration> <configSections> <section name="microsoft.web.services3" type="Microsoft.Web.Services3.Configuration.WebServicesConfiguration, Microsoft.Web.Services3, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" /> </configSections> <applicationSettings /> <system.web> <globalization /> <webServices> <soapExtensionImporterTypes> <add type="Microsoft.Web.Services3.Description.WseExtensionImporter, Microsoft.Web.Services3, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyTo

What is the best way to read REST (XML) response?

I make a REST request to Amazon S3 using HttpWebRequest and get an XML response. The simplest example is my bucket list. I want to display the number of buckets and their names. What is the most efficient way to read the XML response and process it?

This is the XML response I'm getting:

<ListAllMyBucketsResult xmlns="http://s3.amazonaws.com/doc/2006-03-01/">

site member group can only open read-only version of the document

Hi there,

According to this video:
more than 1 person can open a word document and edit it at the same time.

When I test it, it doesn't work.
I can open it fine but my colleague can only open a read-only version.
We're both using Office 2010.
I found out that I'm part of OWNER group, while the other guy is just a MEMBER group.

I've checked the permission for MEMBER, it has "contribute" permission, which allow him to edit document library:
<label for="idspnidEditListItems">Edit Items  -  Edit items in lists, edit documents in document libraries, and customize Web Part Pages in document libraries. </label>

If I add him to OWNER group, he can work on it like the one on the video (link above).
Or, I can add individual user and assign DESIGNER role to it.

My question is: why he has to be in the OWNER group (or DESIGNER role)?
since we have many people working on the document but only 1 person to be included in the OWNER group, it's not a good idea to add everyone to OWNER

Access Denied when trying to give read only access to team site.

I am using a Team Site template with a custom master page for my SharePoint site.  I am now trying to setup a group of users that only have read access to the site.  The site is not inheriting permissions from the parent site and the users are setup with Site Visitor access on both the site and the customer master page.  The problem I am running into is that when I try to access the site with one of the read only accounts, I receive an error that the current user's access is denied.

Am I missing some other areas where I should have changed permissions?
Is there a different way I should have done this?

_AppStart.cshtml: can't get response/request to write/read cookie?

currently, I'm setting up an HttpCookie in a "master" page (layout) and check wiehter I need to send the user back to some specific page depending on the value, if it has expired, etc.
Because the master layout page is not the 1st "page" code to process, I can sometime get runtime error because the cookie is already expired.

I thought I would move this part to the _AppStart.cshtml file but I can't get to read/write (Response/Request) the cookie there?

Should I do this in a _PageStart.cshtml in all my folders rather?

Changing the graphics on the home page of a SharePoint site

When you create a site in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services by using the default Team Site template, the home page includes two default graphics. A Windows SharePoint Services graphic appears in the body of the page, and a picture of a house in a circle appears near the site title. You can change these graphics to customize your site. Changing the smaller graphic requires a Windows SharePoint Services compatible Web page editor

Take a tour of your SharePoint site

What is a SharePoint site for?
A SharePoint site is a Web site that provides a central storage and collaboration space for documents, information, and ideas. A SharePoint site is a tool for collaboration, just like a telephone is a tool for communication, or a meeting is a tool for decision making. A SharePoint site helps groups of people (whether work teams or social groups) share information and work together. For example, a SharePoint site can help you:

Coordinate projects, calendars, and schedules.
Discuss ideas and review documents or proposals.
Share information and keep in touch with other people.

Six easy ways to customize your site using Web Parts in SharePoint

Becoming familiar with Web Part customization techniques gives you a range of page-customization choices. For example, you can customize your site's home page so that it displays the specific information that your team needs. You can rearrange the list items on the home page, add lists, and even change the images on the home page. As you become more familiar with Web Part Page customization techniques, you can build interactive Web Part Pages that makes the data in lists more dynamic and useful, and you can add new Web Parts that provide access to external data and Web services.

ASP.NET has been developed with lots of features which makes developer life easy. Start from ViewState, PostBack, Server Controls , User Controls and etc. All of them can make your web development experience fun and easy, but improper use of them can cause your site performance slowdown. Most of the controls generate overhead to the client and server. Therefore in this article, I I will list out about things you can do and don't to improve your ASP.NET website performance.

SharePoint Application and Site Pages - Part 1 of 2

In this first part of the two part series, Steven covers the differences between Site and Application pages in SharePoint 2007, why each may be used in various circumstances, and prepares for the construction of a menu located application page. After a brief introduction he examines the concept of Site Pages and Application Pages separately in detail with supported screenshots.

SharePoint Application and Site Pages - Part 2 of 2

As the second article in a two part series, Steven examines the attributes and details of a SharePoint 2007 application page, including the construction and feature deployment of the same page based project. Since this is a WSS level objective, as opposed to MOSS, you will not need MOSS to work with the code included in this project. Windows Server 2003, WSS, and Visual Studio 2005 are all that is needed, with no additional add-ons. He provides a detailed analysis of each step involved in the creation and deployment of the project.
