Need some help and/or advice on how to archive data.

Posted By:      Posted Date: December 04, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hello, I would like to apologize in advance ... I am a software developer, not even close to a DBA.  I know little to nothing about anything that isnt' a table, view or stored procedure.  That being said, I am being asked by my employer, to act as a DBA for a customer of ours.  The problem is that they only want 30 days worth of data to exist at a time within our current database, and they want to archive all other data into another location, preferably on a removable storage device that can be swapped out as it fills up.

I have no earthly clue as to what is available in the world of SQL server.  But I can tell you that almost anything that does exist probably doesn't exist for this particular customer as they seem to be using SQL server 2000.

Most everything I get when I google is talking about 2005 and 2008 SQL server, and file groups and a bunch of other stuff which doesn't seem like even if i had 2005 or 2008 would even be practical for what our customer is trying to accomplish.  Our customer wishes to offload this data in such a way that it can be restored should they need to ever use it again .. but not in a way in which it is completely integrated with SQL server.  I don't know, almost like a data dump into some sort of log file that can be read back in to a temp table or something?  I am not quite sure what is

Advice on Data from Data - SQL VB.NET

Could on I get some advice on how to properly write / retrieve, in VB.NET / ASP.NET Page,  from SQL. It's not so much the 'writing' part for SQL that I am worried about.  I'm having some trouble retrieving data properly. I have a routine that runs each time the page is loaded, or an insert is performed (2 button, virtually the same process), post back occurs. When the page loads getTheSavedData - could be empty (recordSet) display 1 Record (recordSet) - that is based upon the getTheSavedData or lack there of   My difficulty is that, my second recordSet isnt getting the parameters expressed from the first recordset.  The saved information has an impact on the 2nd recordset / query. It can more or less be summarized in this Procedure. (excuse the clutter, I've been working with a few things, trying to display it on screen for myself)Private Sub a1TrialData() Dim a1IDCBDsaved As Integer = 0 Dim a1IDPBDsaved As Integer = 0 Dim a1IDCBDremaining As Integer Dim a1IDPBDremaining As Integer Dim SQLCount As String = "SELECT * FROM MER_ASS_QA WHERE U_ID = " & _ Merit3.passVariables.AUIDp & " AND A_Priority = " & _ Merit3.passVariables.aPriorityP & "AND TRIAL_NUM = " & _ Merit3.passVariables.aTrialNumP Dim strSQL

Advice on collecting data in a time series

Hi everyone,  I just wanted to get some ideas of what you would think be the best way to collect data/numbers that are part of a time series?  Let's say I'm collecting monthly data from the users, related to some product and I'd like to be able to provide them a simple and efficient way of entering these numbers based on some month end period.  So for instance on 6/30/2009, they could enter some numbers for a set of data points that pertain to that product.  Would one of the data controls (such as GridView or DetailsView) be sufficient to do this?  I know the GridView isn't so much able to save data but I believe the DetailsView has some functionality for that. In the end, I'd really like to provide a seemless way to do show this and ability to enter and save this.  Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Looking for advice on how to code a data-driven app

I am looking for some guidance on how to proceed with a database-driven ASP.NET 4.0 application. The requirements are that the end user must be able to do the following:

- Resize columns
- Rearrange columns
- Edit the data (if they have the correct permissions)
- Sort the columns
- Filter the data (e.g., show only certain columns or rows)

In addition to the above, whatever the end user does in terms of resizing, rearranging, etc. must be stored or "remembered" somehow by the application so that the next time they login, their settings will be customized to their liking so that they don't have to keep reconfiguring things every time they use the application.

Do you know of anything, besides Silverlight, that can be used in conjunction with ASP.NET to accomplish the above goals?

Silverlight is out of the question for reasons which I won't get into. I have looked into using the Yahoo! User Interface (YUI), which will work to some degree. However, I'm not sure how the user's preferences can be stored for future use, and that is a key requirement. I wonder if column widths, arrangements, and filter settings can be stored using the Profile feature of the ASP.NET Membership Provider?

Sending data to the client ( advice )?

Currently, I am exploring options for sending data to the client.  What I am hoping for is suggestions, or a pros and cons feedback.

What I am wanting to do is query the database then send this data to a web service ( or maybe wcf ).  Once there, jquery ( or another JS library ) will utilize this data to fill a grid/tree/form depending. This all seems very very basic, but what concerns me is the amount of data that can be sent.  I have seen some grids that have 16K records...and what worries me is that would be WAY too much data to send.

I was just wondering how these things are handled.  My current thoughts are to do a 'onDemand' loading, but my inexperience has me second guessing.  Also, I know this isn't directly related to jquery, but I notice there are a lot more examples with wcf rather than webmethod/web services. Is there a reason why? Is wcf better for these types of things?

Binding WPF Controls to an Entity Data Model

In this interview, programming writer, McLean Schofield, demonstrates how to bind WPF controls to an entity data model, using Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1. You can also learn more in the topic: Walkthrough: Binding WPF Controls to an Entity Data Model.

Surrogate vs Natural Primary Keys - Data Modeling Mistake 2 of 10

In case you're new to the series I've compiled a list of ten data modeling mistakes that I see over and over that I'm tackling one by one. I'll be speaking about these topics at the upcoming IASA conference in October, so I'm hoping to generate some discussion to at least confirm I have well founded arguments.

The last post in this series Referential Integrity was probably less controversial than this one. After all, who can argue against enforcing referential integrity? But as obvious as surrogate keys may be to some, there is a good deal of diversity of opinion as evidenced by the fact that people continue to not use them.

Editing the Data in a GridView

In addition to deleting a GridView's underlying data, another common need is to allow end users to edit the data displayed in a GridView. With ASP.NET 1.x's DataGrid control, editing the data is certainly possible, but requires creating three event handlers and writing a dozen or so lines of code. With the GridView and ASP.NET 2.0, it is possible to create an editable GridView without writing a single line of code! All of the necessary functionality is encapsulated within the GridView.

The GridView allows editing on a row-by-row basis. An editable GridView contains an additional column with an Edit button in each row. When the end user clicks on an Edit button that row becomes editable, causing the Edit button to change to Update and Cancel buttons and the other columns to become TextBoxes. The end user can then update one or more column values and click Update to save their changes.

Using ASP.NET 3.5's ListView and DataPager Controls: Displaying Data with the ListView

Prior to ASP.NET 3.5, developers who needed to display a set of records could choose between the GridView, DataList, and Repeater controls. The GridView provides rich data features, but has a very boxy layout; the DataList and Repeater allow for a more flexible layout, but lack the "point and click" data features found in the GridView, DetailsView, and FormView controls. The ListView bridges the gap between layout flexibility and built-in data features.

This article, the first in a series of articles on the ListView and DataPager controls, looks at the ListView's many available templates and illustrates how to display data. Read on to learn more!

Dynamic Data Templates in GridView ASP.NET 3.5

At a high level, Dynamic Data Templates can be seen as a system to very quickly build up a User Interface linked with the relevant data model, immediately enabling you to perform CRUD operations (Create, Read, Update, Delete) on the database using the specified data source. They provide a powerful method for building up these kinds of applications, and I'm going to focus on an overview of what Dynamic Data Templates actually are, and a few ways of customizing them to suit industry needs.

MS SQL Server: Search All Tables, Columns & Rows For Data or Keyword Query

If you need to search your entire database for specific data, this query will come in handy.

So when a client needs a custom report or some sort of custom development using Great Plains, most of the time I will have to track down the data in the system by running this query and find the table(s) it is in.

Displaying Data using ASP.NET 2.0 Repeater and C#

This tutorial will show you how to display data using the .NET Repeater Control, ASP.NET 2.0 and C#.NET

The Repeater control is a powerful tool and is easy to use.

First, you will need to import the System.Data.SqlClient namespace.

MVC architecture in ASP.Net using C# and Microsoft Data Access Application block

The Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern separates the modeling of the domain, the presentation, and the actions based on user input into three separate classes [Burbeck92]:

Model. The model manages the behavior and data of the application domain, responds to requests for information about its state (usually from the view), and responds to instructions to change state (usually from the controller).

View. The view manages the display of information.

Controller. The controller interprets the mouse and keyboard inputs from the user, informing the model and/or the view to change as appropriate.

ASP.NET 4.0 Dynamic Data and Many to Many Entity Framework Entities

I did not play much with Dynamic Data controls in VS2008 and just made a cool discovery in VS2010 Beta 2. This may not even be new, but as I'm sitting 30,000+ feet over the Atlantic ocean, I don't have access to VS2008 at the moment to check.

Display data in gridview dynamicallay

I have AD domain which has 100000 users, I want to display all the users in gridview controls.Actually it is displaying users in gridview after parsing entire domain which takes around 30 min. I want to display the users while loading itself. It is continously getting user information from AD domain and getting each user details, I want to display the users information which already queried instead of waiting till getting all users information
