Ive been trying for weeks to try & work out the design for a highly available sql 2008r2 cluster & am getting know where. These SQL servers will be for a small hosting company.
I already have a Server 2008 R2 Failover cluster working perfectly with 2 Dell R710's & a Dell SAN. All Servers in the said hosting domain are virtual (Hyper V). Can live migrate virtual servers with no issues. What is worring me is in case the operating
system on a sql server dies then we are in real trouble. Ive never setup a SQL cluster before.
From what I can work out it is called Guest Clustering. To me the only issue is about shared storage on the SAN.
Sql01 can reside on server a & if ther is any issues just migrate over to server b. But if Sql01 was to die then sql2 would need to take over but have access to the sql data.
Does a clustered shared volume do the trick? I also tried creating a seperate icsci disk to the lun but that cannot be shared with 2 virtual machines.
My line of thinking is that this must be a pretty common deployment & i am a little frustrated at my lack of ability to find meaningful documentation.
Thanks in advance
