I installed SQL Server 2008 Express 64-bit, but I can't install SQL Server 2008 Management Studio E

Posted By:      Posted Date: December 04, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
I installed SQL Server 2008 Express 64-bit Runtime succesfully on my Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP2 64-bit. However when I start the setup to install SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express (SSMSE) 64-bit Edition, I get the following error message:

SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe is not a valid Win32 application. OK.

Conclusion: I can't install this Management Tool for SQL Express server. I don't understand the error message. All is 64-bit. Does the message mean that I have to install the 32-bit version? Why? That doesn't make sense, as everything is running in 64-bit.

Any resolution to this issue?

Cannot install SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express

I can't get the SQL Server Management Studio to install.  I'm running Windows 7 (32-bit), and have successfully installed the Sql Server 2008 R2 developer edition (from dreamspark.com).  Some of the SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) advanced Properties are as follows:

File Version: 2007.100.4000.0

64-bit OS: No

Service Pack Level: 2

Version 10.2.4000.0

I downloaded the x86 SSMS 2008 express from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=08e52ac2-1d62-45f6-9a4a-4b76a8564a2b

When I execute the download, I get a compatibility issues message stating I must apply SQL Server 2008 SP1 or later before I run SS2008 on my version of windows.  When I run the program, it extracts all the files and then launches the SQL Server Installation Center.

I select the "Installation" option for a new SS stand-alone or add features, which then launches the Setup Support Rules (Passed: 7, Failed: 0, W:0 S:0).  I click OK, advancing to the Setup Support Files stage.  Clicking on install completes (P:10 F:0 W:1 (firewall) S:0), and then clicking on Next brings me to the Installation Type screen. I select the Add Features radio button & click Next, which then brings me to the Feature Selection screen.

It is here where I get stuck because I can't select any

How do you install SQL Server management studio express 2008?

Why do you make it so, so complicated?

I just want to install the piece of software that manages Azure databases. I've being downloading all kinds of files all day, getting incomprehensible error messages, and still am getting no where!

I'vw worked out that it's not this file: SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe

or this one: SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe

So please, which file is it, and where can I download it?

SQL Server 2008 Express Management Studio fails to install because it thinks visual studio is instal

I tried to install SQL Server 2008 R1 Express with Tools on Windows Server 2008 R2. It installed, but the management studio failed to install because it said I already had Visual Studio installed and it needed Visual Studio service pack 1 before Management Studio could install.

Visual Studio is nowhere to be found in Programs and Features, and when I try to install Visual Studio SP1, it won't install, saying:

A compatible version of Visual Studio 2008 was not detected on the system. This update is designed for only the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (ENU) product family, and is not compatible with any Express editions.

Though I can't find any Express version of SP1 to try, and there is no SP1 in windows update.

Getting Sql Server Management Studio 2008 installed on local computer

Hello, I have been trying to figure out this problem for a while now so hopefully someone can help me out - I would really appreciate it! Right now I have SQl Server Management Studio2005 installed on my computer for a SQL sever that we have. We recently got a 2008 sql server and if I remotely access the server, I can see that SQL Management Studio 2008 has been isntalled on the new server. I need to build new databases but need SQL Management Studio 2008 on my computer and I have no idea how to get it. I have a "Microsoft SQl Server 2008 R2" folder on my computer, and I have already tried clicking on "Configuration Tools" and then "SQL Server Installation center" and it isntalls a bunch of things, but none of them are "SQL Server Management Studio 2008."  I also found a link on a Microsoft website that says it's SQL Server Management studio 2008 R2 but it was just the same bunch of programs I already downloaded. How do I install Sql Server Managment Studio 2008 on my computer?! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Need good tutorial on SQL Server Management Studio 2008 Express.

I need to be able to manage a SQL Server 2008 database on a remote server.  The hosting company suggests SQL Server Management Studio 2008 Express since I'm on a low budget.  The first thing I found when researching this was a MS warning that SQL Server Management Studio Express shouldn't be used with hosted environments.  The more I read, the more it looks like it would work but the more confused I get.  If any of you have experience with this or know of a good tutorial covering it I'd be very grateful.  Just getting SQL Server Management Studio 2008 Express installed has been a pain with needing .Net Framework 4.0 and updates and has eaten up hours I hadn't planned on.

My local OS is Windows 7 and the hosting server is Windows Server 2008.

Can't connect to SQL Express 2008 from Visual Studio, but can connect from SQL Server Management St

I've been struggling with the following issue for 3 days:  I can access and use my SQL Express 2008R2 database flawlessly from SQL Server Management Studio.  But I can only intermittently access it from Visual Studio (ultimate edition with TF Server).  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  I mostly see the error when I try to "Update Model from Database" within my Entity framework model, or when I try to access the database from within Server Explorer.

Here is the error I see when I try to update my Entities form the Database: An error occurred while connecting to the database.  The database might be unavailable.  An exception of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException' occurred.  The error message is: 'Cannot open user default database. Login failed.  Login failed for user 'Tim-PC\Tim'.'

I think the connection string is fine as I am able to connect

Having problems installing/setting up SQL Server 2008 Express/R2 for ASP.NET user management on deve

I'm a bit new to installing and configuring, well, just about anything regarding databases, so please bear with me. I'm currently building a couple of ASP.NET MVC 2 sites.  I'm following along with the MVCMusicStore tutorial, and am trying to set up user management using ASP.NET's configuration tool.  The problem is that ASP.NET can't 'see' the database. I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my laptop.  It's the version which is available on the Web Platform Installer (I believe it's Express).  When I try running the aspnet_sqlreg.exe program to set up my user management database, it can't tell that I'm running any version of SQL Server at all.  I get an exception about 'named pipes', and some other things I don't understand at the moment. Obviously, this is all a bit over my head.  Is there an idiot proof guide or tutorial available that describes, step-by-step, how to: 1. Install SQL Server 2008 on a development PC 2. How to configure it to be used by Visual Studio 2010 Professional 3. How to properly upload/modify the db on the production server with what's on the development PC Essentially, all the things that the ASP.NET tutorials gloss over.  Any suggestions, links to documentation, or other nudges in the right direction would be immensely appreciated.

SQL Server 2008 Management Studio

Been around SQL Server since 7.0 days.   In SQL Server 2008 Management Studio I don't seem to be able to display Created Date for Views. I can't really believe MS have taken this away so hence my Q.   I find it useful to see Created Data to script my recently developed View and other objects.   Robert, Edinburgh    Bob as MCSD.NET 2003

Unable to install SQL Server 2008 Express R2 after installing .NET 4.0

Hi experts, I intend to redistribute SQL Server 2008 Express R2 in my installer. I've extracted the setup files from SQLEXPR32_x86.exe and pass in the appropriate command line parameters during the setup. Recently, I noticed if I applied the following Windows Update: .NET 4.0 Client Profile, I will hit into the following error when I installed SQL express. .NET Runtime 4.0 Error Reporting EventType clr20r3, P1 setup100.exe, P2 10.50.1600.1, P3 4bb67524, P4 mscorlib, P5, P6 4ba1da6f, P7 44f0, P8 32, P9 system.security.security, P10 NIL. .NET Runtime Application: setup100.exe Framework Version: v4.0.30319 Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception. Exception Info: System.Security.SecurityException Stack: at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.DebugBreak() at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.Main() Running the setup.exe from a file server will give these errors but if I copied the entire setup files to a local folder and run setup.exe from there, it runs fine. May I know what am I missing? I definitely need to support to install SQL express running from a file server location. Thanks, MK

SQL Server 2008 Management Studio - Summary Windows.

I am using SQL Server 2008 (10.0.1600), now came across an issue to display Summary Windows but unfortunately found that F7 (Keyboard shortcut to display summary window) is not working and even Summary windows is not available in View Menu of SQL Server Management Studio. Maybe it’s a minor issue but I failed to find solution. Thanks (in advance) for the help.
