Database engine tuning advisor - statistics

Posted By:      Posted Date: December 04, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

This is a two part question:

First, is the primary reason DTA suggests new statistics because it generates multi-column stats whereas autoupdate stats only computes single-column ones?  Or is that because the current statistics are out of date (i.e. if you ran sp_updatestats first, would DTA then not need to recommend any?)

Second, is it fair to say that if you have a multi-column index, you should manually create a multi-column statistic to go along with it?

Database Tuning Advisor, Stored Procedure with datetime parameters, syntax error

I receive these error(s) in the Tuning Log. I have several stored procedures and they all use a datetime parameter.

E000    exec <some sproc name> ''2009-01-01 00:00:00:000'',''2010-09-30 00:00:00:000'',N'',N'',NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL         1    [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Incorrect syntax near '2009'.

I am using SQL 2005. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Reece

Performance tuning tips for database developers

Performance tuning is not easy and there aren't any silver bullets, but you can go a surprisingly long way with a few basic guidelines.

In theory, performance tuning is done by a DBA. But in practice, the DBA is not going to have time to scrutinize every change made to a stored procedure. Learning to do basic tuning might save you from reworking code late in the game.

Below is my list of the top 15 things I believe developers should do as a matter of course to tune performance when coding. These are the low hanging fruit of SQL Server performance - they are easy to do and often have a substantial impact. Doing these won't guarantee lightening fast performance, but it won't be slow either.

Speed SQL: Tuning Your Database Calls with Tier Interaction Profiling

Tier interaction profiling (TIP) is a feature of the Visual Studio profiling tools that measures the duration of synchronous calls to ADO.NET-compliant data stores. We'll show you how TIP works and provide some best practices for using TIP to diagnose performance problems in your apps.

2008 R2 Tuning Advisor reports "Error: Exception encountered(DTAEngine)"

I am encountering an error when I try to use the SQL 2008 R2 Database Engine Tuning Advisor. I create a very simple workload (either by right-clicking a query in SSMS or by loading a file), and click Start Analysis.  In the "Consuming Workload" step DTA aborts, and in the message column displays "Error: Exception Encountered(DTAEngine)". When I click on the error message, I get a dialog box with a title of DTAEngine, and a message "Error: Exception encountered". This is a clean test environment (SQL 2008 R2 Data Center Edition 64-bit, on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit, in a VM) against a local database. Any ideas about what the problem is or how to resolve it? Hello,This is the first time I am using this forum. I am stuck and need some help. I received this error message both on SQL 2005 and 2008. I am currently using SQL 2008 DEV for testing purposes and I am experiencing this error message when trying to connect to Database Engine Tuning Advisor. Hi there, I have developed some reports using Visual Studio and everything worked fine in the office. Now I'm trying to deploy them on my customer PCs but this process keeps failing. These reports can be built and even previewed within Visual Studio but they cannot be deployed. Here is the error message I get: ----------------------------------------- The feature: "The Database Engine instance you selected is not valid for this edition of Reporting Services. The Database Engine does not meet edition requirements for report data sources or the report server database." is not supported in this edition of reporting services. ---------------------------------------- The versions of the software on my customer machines are: SQL Server Enterprise 9.0.3282 SQL Server 2005 Management Studio 9.00.4035 SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Designers 9.00.4035.00 Visual Studio 2005 8.0.50727.42 I believe that changing the edition of the Reporting Services from Designers to Enterprise should fix the deployment error but I did not find a way or setup files to do so. Many thanks in advance for your help!

No Servers listed under Database Engine in SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Where to begin. It's late so I hope I can be clear. I have installed SQL Server 2008. I am running Windows Server 2008 R2. I have installed SQL Server four times and I continue to have issues connecting to the Database Engine. Installation has gone without a problem at least to my knowledge I have not been presented with any errors. I have also created a local administrator account called "spadmin" to use to connect to the SQL Server database and to use with SharePoint 2010. Which brings me to the reason why I want to run SQL Server - I want to evaluate the latest SharePoint Server 2010 and WSS. Unfortunately, I have not been able to go beyond installing SQL Server and connecting to the database, because there is no database instance showing under the Database Engine, except under Integration Services. I have the following services installed: SQL Acitivey Directory Helper Service SQL Full-text-Filder Daemon Launcher SQL Server SQL Server Agent SQL Server Analysis Service SQL Server Browser SQL Server Integration Services 10.0 SQL Server Reporting Services SQL Server VSS Writer Am I missing something? I have been following several online instructions on how to install SQL Server 2008 and I can't seem to find where I may have gone wrong. After I install SQL Server 2008 am I supposed to see the default instance (MSSQLSERVER) listed under the Database Eng

SQL Server 2008 Windows Authentication Mode fails for Database Engine, error 18456

I installed SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (10.0.1600.22.080709-1414) on a Windows Vista 32-bit development machine with Windows Authentication Mode only (no SQL Server Authentication).   Since this is a development machine, I saw no need for Mixed Mode when I did the install.  The SQL Server Management Studio allows me to login to Analysis Services, Integration Services, Reporting Services, BUT NOT the Database Engine!Windows Authentication for the Database Engine gives the following error: EventID: 18456Login failed for user MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>]The 'fix' I have found online is to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine.  Unfortunately, I can't since I didn't install SQL Server Authentication mode (only Windows Authentication Mode).  It appears my only recourse is to uninstall, then reinstall in Mixed mode, then to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine. Before I do so, does anyone know of a better approach?Scott D Duncan

SQL 2008R2 on Windows7 - Can't connect to Database engine

Hello, After a successful installation of SQL server 2008 R2 on My Windows7 machine, it seems that I can't connect to database engine using the management studio. When trying to connect to database using SSMS to localhost or localhost\MSSQLSERVER or . or .\MSSQLSERVER I receive the following error: Cannot connect to localhost. Additional information: Method not found: 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.DatabaseEngineType Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ConnectionManager.get_DatabaseEngineType()'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlStudio.Explorer)   I'm using a default instance (MSSQLSERVER), I also confirmed that the service is running. I didn't see any error during installtion, and also opened Port 1433 TCP on my firewall. (After installation) Currently nothing helps.   Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Asher

SQL Server Database Engine cannot obtain a LOCK resource - Advice VERY welcome

Since about 07:47 this morning (which is why I fired up a web browser running several programs which used databases on this server) I have been seeing the following error: Event Type: ErrorEvent Source: MSSQLSERVEREvent Category: (2)Event ID: 1204Date: 14/10/2009Time: 10:54:23User: CD\REMOTESERVER$Computer: SQLSERVERDescription:The instance of the SQL Server Database Engine cannot obtain a LOCK resource at this time. I ran through the guidance provided, but we cap memory use at 16GB and the server is not using more than 5GB. I looked at current locks and no process was using more than 4, a total of about 110 all told. We don't cap connections, indeed we pretty much run with the default SQL settings. The only issue I can see relating to SQL was a failed patch attempt Event Type: ErrorEvent Source: Windows Update AgentEvent Category: Installation Event ID: 20Date: 14/10

Allocate more memory to the database engine

I have a computer with 4GB. How can I allocate more than 2GB to SQL Server? The AWE option still doesn't let me allocate more. Thanks.
