Various Shortcuts in BIDS

Posted By:      Posted Date: December 04, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Just a few questions in getting into designing reports in BIDS (SSRS 2005):

1) Is there a keyboard shortcut (or icon on a toolbar) to perform an "Insert Column To The Right" in a report table object?  If I need to add 10 columns, it's kind of a pain to right-click on a column and then choose "Insert Column" from the popup menu 10 times.  I did find a way to add an icon for this to a toolbar, but it's disabled when it should be enabled.  I haven't investigated trying to create my own keyboard shortcut... is that the only way?

2) This might eliminate the need for #1 above: Is there a way to somehow drag an entire dataset to a report table object to create columns in the report table for every column in the dataset?  Or is there a way to drag multiple columns?  I can't seem to do a multi-select in the dataset... I can only drag one at a time.

3) When dragging columns from the dataset to a report table object, is there an option that I can set to prevent BIDS from massaging the title of the column?  For example, if I drag a column called CustomerID from the dataset to the report table object, it insists on changing "CustomerID" to "Customer ID" (embedded space) as the title of the column.

Keyboard shortcuts stops working in WebMatrix

I'm often experiencing that keyboard shortcuts stops working in WebMatrix. This is very annoying as CTRL-S, CTRL-C, CTRL-V, etc. stops working, all of which are heavily used when programming. It's obviously hard to explain how to reproduce this, but I was wondering if someone knows a quick-fix?

BIDS Doubt

I m using BIDS for the first time. I m using stored procedure to retrieve data.

There are two options as Command Type with dropdown Text and stored Procedure.

I m seeing another existing report and in that one, In command Type Place, there is stored procedure and when I click dropdown, I got all the stored procedures listed there.

May I know how can I get that.? what is the difference.? I want to see my newly written stored procedure in that drop down box

BIDS undo/redo buttons

In MS Visual Studio 2008 on Windows Server 2008 or BIDS my undo / redo buttons are grayed out when I am editing an SSIS package. I would like to know if there is a way to enable this. I have searched and searched everything looks retardedly complicated to get this working. Help? Anyone, anyone... Microsoft are you there?

SQL Server 2008 R2 BIDS PageHeader's PrintOnFirstPage=False Not Behaving Like SQL Server 2008 BIDS

I have recently upgraded from SQL Server 2008 SP2 Enterprise edition to 2008 R2 Enterprise, and was in the process of validating that the process did not have any adverse affects on my existing 150 reports originally designed and managed via BIDS 2008. Several reports were designed where the first page has a header different from the rest of the pages.  I created the generic header in the PageHeader and set PrintOnFirstPage to False.  This worked great in 2008...but in 2008 R2 the real estate on the first page is not "freed," so the first page looks like it has an enormous top margin when rendered as a PDF. Even playing around with the visibility of the text box doesn't eliminate the whitespace - and setting visibility properties was not required to get it to work in SQL Server, which rendered as a PDF perfectly just yesterday before our upgrade! I noticed that there were three patches available, but I did not see a Fix available that addressed this issue, therefore I did not install them as advised on the site. Is there any way to do free up the real estate so my first page can use it (maybe a setting in 2008 R2 that wasn't there for 2008)? Or is this a known bug between the two and a patch/hotfix is in the works? I'd hate to have reports that were specifically designed with certain paging to have to be revisited one by one. Thank you fo

VS2008 BIDS Report export to Excel not grouping the same as VS2005

I have a report that I created in VS2005 BIDS and got it to export to Excel to group/subtotal the same way it does in the BIDS report window.  Now I have copied the .rdl files to a VS2008 project, open it in VS2008 BIDS, made NO changes to the report format and the exported Excel file is combining what should be the 2nd and 3rd groups into 1 group.  In the BIDS window, the grouping is working correctly.  Does anyone have any ideas what has changed between 2005 & 2008 that may cause this problem?  Thanks in advance.

I need to use BIDS but don't know if I have it

I have vs2008 and vs2010 (have unloaded vs2005) and MS SQL Server Management Studio 2008 yet nothing jumps out at me to say I have BIDS.Where do I look?  What does it look like?  Is there tutorials to show all this? How will I know if I have it installed? Thanks in anticipation.

What is the advantage and disadvantage of creating a Analysis Services project using AMO over BIDS?

BIDS Query Designer very slow in VS 2008

I am in the process of upgrading my Report Server projects from 2005 to 2008.  These reports use an Analysis Services 2005 data source and have queries that are anywhere from 20 to 100 lines of MDX.  After upgrading a report, when I open or save a dataset in the Query Designer, it takes up to 20 seconds.  In 2005, this would happen almost instantly. Running SQL Server Profiler, I see that there is an extensive number (600+) of Discover events going on with the Analysis Services server while the Query Designer loads. My version of Visual Studio is 9.0.30729.1 SP and I am running Windows XP SP2. Thanks, Mitch

BIDS Query Designer very slow

BIDS Query Designer seems to be very slow while saving the query or opening the query designer when you've got quite a lot of Query Parameters. When I remove all the query parameters, the query designer seems to be running smoothly. Editing a query with about 10 to 15 query parameters takes ages this way! Is there something I can do about this?!

SharePoint List Source and Destination BIDS adapters not working for our sharepoint instance

It was with great anticipation I installed the SharePoint List Source and Destination BIDS adapters (from CodePlex, http://sqlsrvintegrationsrv.codeplex.com/releases/view/17652). Unfortunately, the adapters are not working for our MOSS sharepoint instance.  We're a DOD (department of defense) site, so the level of security may be higher than normal and may be affecting the adapters. The error message was lengthy and I couldn't copy it and paste here.  I did screen shots and put the complete error message at http://www.christianbahnsen.com/sharepoint_source_error_message.pdf If I can get this to work I think it would be very useful.  I'd played around with KPI Lists, but one cannot create an Indicator directly from SQL Server 2008 (cf. my related thread at http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepointbi/thread/bcc95f65-012e-4b8a-8850-b03fb0f16b0f).  I was hoping that these adapters would provide a work-around by populating sharepoint lists that could be the source for KPI Indicators. As always, thanks in advance for any assistance. Christian Bahnsen

BIDS wont let me edit script tasks, Package wont open without a "temp" folder in appdata???

I have a very stupid problem, because the way BIDS works is just hilariousy idiotic.    Short Story: 1) When i try to edit script tasks it will complain about "failed to create project at some random path in temp folder" and wont open anything. I cannot edit script tasks anymore. THe project is essentialy dead to me. REboot or restart wont help. I spent five hours on this project and i dont want to do all that work from scratch! 2) I cannot port my solution to antoher computer or place because it links to the files in appdata/local/temp folder of the pc for some reason. If i delete that folder or port the solution, it will complain about some file in temp folder called "3jews....tmp" and will say that solution is unopenable. Need help to resuce my project and be able to continue working on it!   Long Story: When you make a project, BIDS stores its files in a separate folder: a solution file, a project file, a package file etc. You might have thought, you can now carry your solution over by copying this folder. WRONG! The BIDS actually stores files of  the solution in /Users/name/AppData/Local/Temp folder! And It cannot open a solution/package/project without files from that folder, now what kind of idiotism is that?   It all started with BIDS not saving my script task changes, then telling me "cannot create project in folder

SSIS 2005 Logging different events under BIDS and Scheduler

I have a package that is working and logging correctly under BIDS 2005 (SS 2005). It logs what I want (in particular "Information" log messages) to a text file. But when I run the package under the scheduler, all it logs to the text file is "Package Started" and "Package Ended". How do I get it to log the same messages under the scheduler as under BIDS?

BIDS 2005 cannot find Stored Procedure

I have read how to do this in multiple places but my report is not able to use a stored procedure for retrieving data. When I select command type 'stored procedure' to populate my dataset, and then switch to the GUI query designer, I only see a partial list of system SPs, not my user defined SPs. My SP does return a single dataset. If I try to manually use the SP, with or without doublequotes and EXEC, the report designer simply tells me that the SP cannot be found.

How to process just one cube in a solution of three cubes inside BIDS SSAS

Hi, I have a BIDS Solution with three cubes...I want to make a full process of just one of the cubes, but If am doing just one, the other cubes comes unavailable... How can I process just one without affecting the other ones? Thanks!

DTExec is MUCH slower that just running my package in Debug mode in BIDS 2005

I am using BIDS / SSIS 2005.  I have a large package that runs very smoothly and fairly quickly when run in debug-mode through BIDS.  When I actually deploy the package to SSIS and execute it using either DTExec or DTExecUI it is WAAAAYYY slower than when run from the development environment.  So slow that I become convinced it is hanging on steps that execute very very quickly in BIDS.  I have read this thread -> http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlintegrationservices/thread/5585fa13-dd15-4406-9d4a-e993f2af5929 which has not helped. I understand that DTExec would be faster than DTExecUI because the former does not have to deal with the GUI component but I would have expected both (and especially DTExec) to be faster than running in debug from BIDS. I realize I am not providing a ton of detail here, problem is I just don't know where to start... any advice on what I should be looking at to improve package execution through DTExec and / or DTExecUI would be greatly appreciated.  Why would DTExec be so much slower than BIDS Debug??? Thanks in advance.. - Charles

SSIS 2005 & 2008 BIDS and VS2005/2008 Will VS2010 work with either SSIS package?

I've read the old posts about having to have the BIDS version match the SSIS package version. My question is with VS2010 is there any change? Can I edit either of the old versions of SSIS packages in VS2010 or do I have to have 3 versions of Visual Studio/BIDS on my machine? TIA J

c# in bids 2008

I have an old VB 6 program that I used to create new table partitions annually.  The program used SQLDMO.  We've upgraded to SQL 2008 since I used it last and it no longer works with SQL 2008.  It’s time for it to be upgraded anyway, so I thought I’d see if I could use the script task in BIDS and create a task to do the same thing using SMO.  I haven’t developed a thing in C# so I’m very much a rookie, and all the examples I find are for using C# in VSS – not in BIDS.  Can anyone point me to a good place where I can see samples of C# code in BIDS?   Here is what my VB6 code looks like, that I’d like to replicate in BIDS 2008 in a script task.  I’d like to do it there because I don’t have VSS.  Is it possible?   Sub Main()   Dim svr As SQLDMO.SQLServer2 Dim strFile As String   Set svr = New SQLDMO.SQLServer2 strFile = "c:\2011Tables.txt"   With svr     .Name = "MyServer"     .LoginTimeout = 15     .Login = "sa"     .Password = "MyPwd"     .Connect End With        Open strFile For Output As #1     For Each View In svr.Databases("LIVE").Tables     If InStr(View.Name, "2010") >
