Timer Jobs - All Servers versus Any Server

Posted By:      Posted Date: December 04, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
I have numerous OOB timer job definitions that have an entry for All Servers and another entry for Any Server.  The only documentation I can find on the differences is that All Servers means the job runs on each server, whereas Any Server means it runs on one server.  Do I need both of these running?  If so, why?

"This server is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 are supported"

I am getting the following error when i want to add a remote connection in the Server explorer:

'This server is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 are supported'

what can be the problem. On Microsoft site i saw, you need to install following update: 'Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Support'

But i have a Microsft SQL Express Server 2005 SP3...

causing 500 server error :(

So, I'm just learning ASP.NET with C#, but this code just makes the page display a "500 - server error page"

the webpage is here: hereswhereyourewrong.net/aspnettest.aspx

the code is as follows:

<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" %>
<!-- This program throws up an Error 500: Server Error -->
<!-- I'm not sure why, it compiles just fine. -->
<!-- The last time it was because I had asp:TextBox fields not in a form -->
<!-- but here I just don't know -->
    <head runat="server" >
        <title>ASP.NET With C# Test</title>
        <script runat="server">
            protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
                timeText.Text = DateTime.Now.ToString("MM-dd-yyyy HH:mm:ss");

            public void updateTime(object sender, EventArgs e)
                timeText.Text = DateTime.Now.ToString("MM-dd-yyyy HH:mm:ss");
        <div style="text-align: center;">

Access to SQL Server Jobs

Hello folks, Would like to grant group of users ( windows logins) to CREATE / MODIFY / DELETE / SCHEDULE jobs on SQL Server 2005. But can not grant users SYSADMIN privileges. I know that by granting users SQLAgentOperatorRole, SQLAgenetReaderRole and SQLAgentUserRole the User will be able to create jobs but they will be the owner of the newly created job and other users can not MODIFY / VIEW / RESCHEDULE the jobs. Is there any way to customize permissions to windows logins to have permission to CREATE / MODIFY / DELETE / SCHEDULE jobs without granting them SYSADMIN privilages ? Appreciate your reply   Thank You Arunaroon

Server Collation SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS versus Latin1_General_CI_AS

Hi,Why does SQL Server 2005 sometimes install with a server collation of :Server Collation SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS and other times a server collation of :Latin1_General_CI_ASWhat causes this ???What is the difference between the two ?Are there any problems restoring databases from one to the other ? Do the two different collations cause problems with applications ?

No Servers listed under Database Engine in SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Where to begin. It's late so I hope I can be clear. I have installed SQL Server 2008. I am running Windows Server 2008 R2. I have installed SQL Server four times and I continue to have issues connecting to the Database Engine. Installation has gone without a problem at least to my knowledge I have not been presented with any errors. I have also created a local administrator account called "spadmin" to use to connect to the SQL Server database and to use with SharePoint 2010. Which brings me to the reason why I want to run SQL Server - I want to evaluate the latest SharePoint Server 2010 and WSS. Unfortunately, I have not been able to go beyond installing SQL Server and connecting to the database, because there is no database instance showing under the Database Engine, except under Integration Services. I have the following services installed: SQL Acitivey Directory Helper Service SQL Full-text-Filder Daemon Launcher SQL Server SQL Server Agent SQL Server Analysis Service SQL Server Browser SQL Server Integration Services 10.0 SQL Server Reporting Services SQL Server VSS Writer Am I missing something? I have been following several online instructions on how to install SQL Server 2008 and I can't seem to find where I may have gone wrong. After I install SQL Server 2008 am I supposed to see the default instance (MSSQLSERVER) listed under the Database Eng

How can I get a list of users that are able to start/stop/execute jobs on sql server?

I know that the users with sysadmin roles are able to start/stop/execute jobs but I wonder if there are another roles or permissions that enable users to do this.   regards,

SQL Server Standard Edition and Servers with more than 4 CPUs:

Hi, We are planning configure a SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition on a server with 8 CPUs - two quad core with hyper threading. The server also runs many SSIS packages and SSRS reports. We would like to assign the highest priority to SQL database engine. Considering the fact that SQL Standard does not leverage more than 4 CPUs, what would be the best way to dedicate most of CPU power to SQL Server database engine? I already found that I can’t dedicate SPUs to SQL Server through this post: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sqldatabaseengine/thread/3b797fc8-3bea-422d-b172-7d1a93195c69 I am a bit concern that manipulating the default settings for Affinity and SQL Server priority might cause harm. That is why I am asking for a good practice for specific circumstance explained here. Any help would be appreciated, Max

Backup/restore Failed don't exist timer jobs

According to John Ferringer, i'm moving this post from "SharePoint Products > SharePoint Products and Technologies Forums > SharePoint - Setup, Upgrade, Administration and Operation (pre-SharePoint 2010) > Backup/restore Failed don't exist timer jobs".

Hi Folks, i'm recieving this message when i try to make a site collection/farm/site backup "The backup/restore job failed because there is already another job scheduled. Delete the timer job from the Timer Job Definitions page, and then restart the backup/restore job.". I'm going to central administration/monitoring/timer jobs/check jobs status but i can not find anything.

My scenario:

- MOSS 2010 EE

- MOPS 2010

Trying to Restore The Application Server Administration Service Timer Job in MOSS 2007

I was using this link to try and repair a failed service job.

What happened is that it blew away my Application Server Administration Service Timer Job.

Is there a way to restart that job?

Sql Server Agent stops executing jobs

Hello everyone.  I'm having a problem with the sql server agent occasionally not executing its scheduled jobs, and unless the sql server agent is restarted they will not execute according to their schedule.  I've read many posts on people having problems with running a package manually and then not being able to run it in a job, although that is not my problem since these are jobs that have all run successfully historically, and only until the agent is restarted do they start working again.  It is the strangest thing.....we have many different jobs on this server and all of them will just mysteriously stop being executed.  Two other things of note, the agent and server processes both run on AD accounts, and we receive this error:

SQL Server Scheduled Job 'X' - Status: Failed - Invoked on: 2007-10-27 02:00:00 - Message: The job failed.  Unable to determine if the owner (AD\adacct) of job 'X' has server access (reason: Unable to connect to server - check SQL Server and SQL Server Agent errorlogs).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Custom Timer Jobs in Farm Features but not Job Definitions.

I have 2 custom jobs activated in MOSS 2007. They both show up in CA under Manage Farm Features but they do not show up in Timer Job Definitions.  One of the jobs are the MSDN SharePoint Warmup Job and the other is a custom one I wrote. I thought that my code was wrong but I downloaded the warmup job and installed/activated it. and it is the same way. Any Suggestions?

Custom Timer Job not working on multi-server farm

I created a timer job based on Andrew Connell's tutorial. I ran this timer job on my development server, and it works perfectly. When I deployed it to our testing server, which is a multi-server farm with one wfe, it doesn't seem to work.

Here is what I have tried so far to get the timer job to work on our test server, based on other posts in this forum, and other tutorials I read on the web.

  • I made sure to stop and restart the timer job every time I change the solution
  • I have logged-in with the farm account on my test server to deploy and activate the feature
  • I have checked the timer job status in Central Admin, it says the timer job ran on the wfe with a status of Succeeded, and a progress of 100%
  • I have checked the SharePoint logs, I see "Start invoke timer job" with my timer job name, and usually the next line or two reads "End invoke timer job"
  • In the execute method, I am now telling it to write to the Sharepoint Logs that it has started, but this line never appears in the logs

I assume that since this is the first time writing a timer job, I am obviously missing something that my solution needs to run on a multi-server farm. I even played with the SPJobLockType, but no luck, it is currently set to ContentDatabase. Do I need to add code that tells my timer jo

Custom Timer Job - Running on wrong server?

I have a WFE + Index Server farm setup.  I deployed a custom timer job on the WFE, and it's only executing on the Index server.  How do I force a job to run on a specific server?

Also, it's status is 'Failed', but there's nothing in the event log?
