Best practice for installing SPF2010 and Search Express 2010 on same web server?

Posted By:      Posted Date: December 04, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I've searched and seemed to find conflicting information.   Is there any place that gives instruction on how to install SPF2010 and Search Express 2010 on the same server?    I set up a single WFE with separate SQL backend farm for SPF2010 testing, but then discoverd that Search Express was required to be able to add the PDF iFilter we use extensively in WSS 3.0.   The one page I found in Technet that lists articles about "upgrade" doesn't have anything linked yet and various forum entries appear to be contradictory.   So can anyone tell me what the best practice is?   Do I start over and just install Search Express and add my SPF site collections to it?  Can I install Search Express and select existing farm (the SPF one) rather than new farm as the installation instructions say?    And if they really should be on separate WFE servers, how do I get the SPF sites to use the SSE search?   Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Search Server Express 2010 - Access Denied when attempting to manage Search Service Application or P

I first noticed this error with the Search Service Application when I was no longer able to use the search portal, but have since noticed the issue with the PowerPoint Service Application.  When I navigate in Central Administration to either the "Farm Search Administration" or the "Manage service applications" pages and attempt to manage the "Search Service Application", I get this error: Error: Access Denied  Current User You are currently signed in as:  WHEELERS\MyUserName   Sign in as a different user    I have tried removing the service application and re-adding it, changing the application pool to running under an existing application pool as the farm administrator, as another application pool with the same identity as the primary web application, and as another application pool running under the SP-SearchService identity. The big recent change with SharePoint, aside from fixing the previous issue where I was incorrectly using CNAMEs with Kerberos, was to switch the main web application to claims authentication. That site correctly works with claims based authentication and Kerberos.

SharePoint Search Server 2010 Express returns no search results for non-admin users

This is going to sound crazy, but anyway... bare with me... I have a SharePoint Search Server 2010 Express (RTM) installed with a crawl account (call it sharepoint_crawl) which has full read permission to an entire site collection of 100,000 documents. I have logged in with this account to make sure it has read access to everything, and it does. I run a full crawl of all documents and allow it to finish. If I try and search the content for an extremely common term (i.e. 50,000+ hits) I get no results. However, if I log in with a site collection admin I do get search results. There are no indexing errors or query errors in either log files or event log. Everything looks like it is working correctly - just no results for non-admins Anyone tripped on this? I have recreated the crawl account and perform a full re-index with the same results. What gets me is that the crawl account does have read permission to the content it is indexing, the content is indexed correctly, but the crawl account cannot get results back. It is as if security-trimming is removing everything. Any ideas?

Search Server 2010 Express databasename GUIDs

I installed SSE 2010 using the "Server Farm" option and default options. I note it created some 9 databases with names like: <normal name>_<GUID> I prefer not to have those GUIDs appear in the name.  It's easy enough to rename the sql databases but what has to be done on the SharePoint side to make it use the renamed databases ?     TIA, Barkingdog

Search Server 2010 Express Error when crawling LOB Data with BCS Error while crawling LOB contents.

Ok so search server is crawling our BCS external data source which has some columns that allow null. When it hits a null in one of these columns it dies out with: Error while crawling LOB contents. ( '.', hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 94, position 11. ) This is in the crawl log Is the a Fix / Update / Work around for this (other than modifying the table, taking off allow nulls and using a "blank" default value)

Upgrading Foundation 2010 to Search Server Express

Hi there,

I can't find any conclusive articles/technet references on what the correct (best) way to get to a Search Server Express 2010 built on top of Foundation actually is.

I know I can install Search Server directly, but does this then limit the features of the resulting "foundation" aspects? Is it better to do a full install of Foundation and then an 'upgrade' to search server 2010 express?

Any links to an actual reference would be great!

how do I enable anonymous search in search server express 2010

I am crawling a local file share that has read permissions for NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE account. I have enabled anonymous access and now I am able to get to my search box without authentication. But when I actually search for something I get no results back. I am able to get results when using the administrator account. I have even created local account and that is also unable to see the results.

Sharepoint 2010 Foundation with Search Server Express

I have Sharepoint 2010 Foundation with Search Server Express installed. The Sharepoint was an upgrade from WSS v3 and search server express 2003.

After the upgrade whenever users search from the main site I get web part errors displayed on the search page. I think because it is trying to use the old search server express which is no longer installed.

Search Server Express 2010 is now installed and a Search Center web page can be viewed however when searching via the entire sites I site the web page with web part errors.

Any thoughts or any further information you require I can provide.

Sharepoint Foundation 2010 and Search Server Express

Can I get some clarification on a couple of points?

Firstly, what is the recommended installation path for SPFoundation and Search Server Express on the same server.  Do I just install SSE 2010?  Or SPF 2010 and then SSE 2010?

Secondly, when the two are installed together how do I add the a SSE 2010 search center link to my SPF 2010 site so I can search all crawled content?  I've created crawls of Exchange public folders and file shares but when I use the built-in site search box it's only returning content crawled from the local site and not anything from the other crawls.

Integrating Sharepoint Foundation 2010 and Search Server Express

I've been searching for ways to do this but I haven't come up with anything.  Surely this is a very common need/want.  Basically I want to use Sharepoint Foundation 2010 but I would like to run Search Server Express in the same installation.  Additionally instead of going to a dedicated search page and then searching, I'd like to add the Search Server Express search functionality as a Web Part to the Sharepoint Foundation home page.  Is there any documented procedures to this?  If not how have you done it?

Sharepoint 2010 Foundation vs Search Server 2010 Express

Does Search Server 2010 Express include Sharepoint Foundation? Or do I need to install Sharepoint first and then install Search Server on top? This is for a brand new install on a single server.

Recovery model in Search Server Express 2010 Databases

We have installed a Search Server 2010 Express. The Database is a SQL Server 2008 SP2 (Standard Version)

I'm not a SQL Crack, I am more the SharePoint specialist.

Now my question: Can I set the recovery model for all databases to "Simple" mode? (instead of full mode). Or is there any problem in functionality if i do this?

The default settings are, that some of this are simple and other databases are full.

Thanks a lot for your help.

SharePoint Foundation - Search Server Express 2010 "upgrade" ?

I have an existing install of SP2010 Foundation. Can I just install Search Server Express 2010 on the WFE server and connect it to the existing farm? Or can I "upgrade" SP2010 Foundation to Search Server Express 2010?

Search Server 2010 Express - To Deploy Or Not To Deploy

We want to deploy (brand new deployment) on Search Server 2010 Express but I need to determine if SSE will be supported in the same manner as SPF?  In other words, will CU's and Service Packs be available for SSE as required?

Currently I see CU's (KB 2475880 and KB 2459125) for SharePoint Foundation 2010 and a CU (KB 983319) for Search Server 2010 but nothing specifically for Search Server 2010 Express.  Is this product being maintained?

Can SharePoint Foundation CU's and Service Packs be applied to SSE installations to keep SSE up-to-date?

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated,

Search Server Gatherer - Custom hierarchical protocol handler ISearchProtocol for MOSS 2010

Search server gatherer calls CloseAccessor() and shutdown() on ISearchProtocol after GetChunk() even if the FILTER_E_END_OF_CHUNKS is not returned. After calling shutdown() it stops calling the createaccessor() with new URL. I want to create a hierarchical indexing but I am not gatherer is not suporting this. The same piece of code is working fine in MOSS 2007, I am facing this issue in MOSS 2010 only. Is there anything changed in MOSS 2010 which is creating this issue?
