Deleting Sharepoint groups is really slow

Posted By:      Posted Date: December 04, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
Ok here's an issue that we're having with WSS 3.0 and hope some else came across this problem. I have a site that has about 2500 sharepoint groups. now Whenever I try to delete a group from within this site it takes like 10 minutes to delete. Also I wanted to see if the slowness lies within the sharepoint object model itself so I create copy of the site on a vm box and executed the "proc_SecRemoveGroup" directly on the sql database and the stored procedure itself took 10 minutes to finish. I read this article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262787.aspx which list the limits of sharepoint and has a suggested limit of 10,000 for creating sharepoint groups so 2500 groups is not even close.

SharePoint Workspace very slow

Hi. We are using SharePoint Workspace to connect to SharePoint 2007 (via the old Groove Workspace). We have a document library with 496 Files and 254 Folders mapped to our workspace. But simple actions with Workspace, such as scrolling through the folders, or even just dragging the Workspace window to another part of my desktop causes it to freeze and think for a few seconds before responding again. We have a customer using Workspace with many more files and folders and the delay is far worse to the point it is almost unusable. Has anyone else experienced this issue?Myles Jeffery | Thinkscape | SharePoint Online Deployment | SharePoint Online File Migration Tool

WebParts with audiences based on SharePoint groups containing AD Groups are not visible.

My client has two webparts on a page. Each of the webparts is audienced with a SharePoint group. Each SharePoint group contains one or more AD groups. The groups are not deep nested. I.e. SharePointGroup -----> ADGroup -----> list of user accounts.. When a user in any of these groups browses to the page, they cannot see the webpart. An AD user added to the SharePoint group sees the audiences webpart properly. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948681 references this issue, however these servers are all recently built with Service Pack 2 slipstream install media, so this hotfix is not valid. They believe that the webparts were working fine previously, but then some ILM work was carried out in the AD over the weekend and it's possible that this has changed some fo the group memberships. Given that we're using SP Groups and AD Groups, Does the actual SSP Import bear any relevance to these memberships or does SharePoint use a (potentially cached) Group memberships object on the SPPrincipal? SQL Server 2008 R2 deploying any version of sharepoint results in extremly slow DB creation

Hello, When installing any version of Sharepoint(2007,2010) during the "Creating Configuration Database" Step it takes over 10 hours to complete.  Then creating a web app takes just as long. and the sites are extreemply slow.  Environment: 1) DB Server - SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 2) Webserver - to host Sharepoint 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2 The Servers are on the same network and running with lots of horsepower, disk and memory.  Are there any know issues with this and should we install Cummulative Update 3? Maybe that has a fix.  We exhausted all our options and need justification to apply the CU3 hotfix(s). Thanks for your help.

SharePoint site response very slow

Hi, We have SharePoint web application. We are hosting it on Windows Sever 2008 along with SQL Server 2008. In the development environment the site works very smoothly. When we deployed the same on our live systems the web application because dead slow. It takes 20-30 mins to load a page and it never let anyone login from a Forms authenticated extention. The windows extention seems to be working fairly decent. I have no clue what is making the site go so slow. Thanks.--Oyshik

Creating default SharePoint groups for upgraded sites

I am doing some testing in preparation for a DB attach upgrade from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint Server 2010, and I've run across a bunch of old sites that do not have the default Owners, Members, and Visitors groups. Without those groups (specifically, without Members) we won't be able to take full advantage of the My Sites Memberships page.

I noticed, though, that when I "Enable Enterprise Features" for all current sites from within Central Administration, sometimes those groups get created on a site that didn't have them before. I've done this on a few different environments and it doesn't seem to always create those groups. Now, I didn't think I had to run Enable Enterprise Features because our 2007 environment was Enterprise, but then I realized some of the sites were created back in SharePoint 2003 and enterprise features might never have been run on the sites when it was upgraded to MOSS 2007.

So the question: is running Enable Enterprise Features for current sites supposed to create the default groups if they don't exist (along with everything else it does)? Is that the recommended way to get groups made for all sites so site admins/owners can add people to that new Members group which allows the users to visit their My Site page to view all the sites they are members of?

Unable to delete groups in SharePoint Foundation 2010

I have a test group I created in SharePoint that I want to delete (I'm the only user in the group). In the "People and Groups: All Groups" screen I click the edit icon next to the group and then click on the "Delete" button and ok the following warning dialog. However, the group doesn't get deleted. Any idea why this is happening and how to finally delete this group? Thanks.

SSIS SharePoint List Adapter - how to query Users & Groups?

I am using SSIS SharePoint List Adapter to load data in and out of my SharePoint Lists from within SSIS, and most of it is working fine.  However, I need to perform a lookup against the Users & Groups collection in SharePoint so I can retrieve the UserID and set the value when writing back to SharePoint.  Any help would be tremendously appreciated!

SharePoint, Active Directiry Groups and Caching

Hello.  I support a portal running on SharePoint.  For some of our SharePoint sites that have larger memberships, we manage the membership through AD groups.  In some cases, clients seem to encountering a caching issue.  As user will be added to the AD group, but SharePoint will continue to give that user an Access Denied message to the site.  Other users who are in the AD group can access the site without issue.  In some cases, creating a new AD group, copying the membership of the original group over, and adding that new group to the site permissions resolves the issue, but not always.  Typically, adding the involved user directly to the site permissions resolves the issue for that user.  Can anyone tell me where SharePoint is caching this information and/or what I can do to clear it out?  Thanks!

SharePoint 2007 - SharePoint deleting files and libraries

There was a process that ran overnight that randomly deleted document libraries and directories within some document libraries thoughout our sharePoint Site.  I do not have any archive jobs running and there was not rhyme or reason to why some were deleted and others were not.  Most of the items deleted were moved to the second recycle bin or stie recycle bin - deleted from end user recycle bin but it was done with the SharePoint administrator account.  I have looked at the logs for anything out of the ordinary but this has never happened in the 3 years since SharePoint was installed.  I have restored the items that were located but others were deleted completely

This deletion of items went through 21 of my site collections but did not delete items from 18 other site collections.

We are running SharePoint 2007 version, MS SQL 2005, NO CUSTOMIZATION straight out of the box installation, 32 bit, 2 WFE's - one running application and one running search, central admin

Any help would be appreciated.

SharePoint 2010, First View of documents very slow

I am using Document Center, I have PDF, Word and text files. On my first initial load of a PDF or Text file is very slow. If I wait the 30 seconds for the text or PDF to show, all the next views are fast.

I do not have issues with Word and Excel. Those seam to load via my local office program. I have been using IE7, Firefox 3.0 and Chrome. Plus multiple machines.

I have been researching and researching on google and could only find the "Detect Proxy settings" uncheck and the make page "Permissive". Those fixes did not work for me.

Please help. Thanks in Advance.

How to modify Send E-Mail subject ("Welcome to the SharePoint group") in People and Groups?

Hi All,

I am using WSS 3.0 in our application. Whenever user is added to the SharePoint Group using People and Groups page, user will be alerted using Send E-Mail option. We want to modify the subject “Welcome to the SharePoint group: Portal Visitors for site: Home”. I found that I can modify AclInv.aspx to modify the subject.

Could you please tell me is there any other way to change this text since modifying Layout pages are not recommended in our environment?

Thanks in advance.

SharePoint 2010 Intranet Site is Slow in the Morning

We are having experience that our intranet site is quite slow in the morning and take up to 30 seconed to load the first time a page. It only for the first user who hit site in morning and after that it is fine for all other users in house. We tried with warn up script as well, but we are not be bale to yet find a reason able solution to make it quicker..

Our sharepoint server is Virtual machine with 64 bit windows server 2008 R2 edition enterprise and sharepoint 2010 installed on it..

Anyone else had similer kind of problem or know how to fix it ??

Viewing Video's in Sharepoint 2010--Will it slow down the performance for the end users?

I understand how to upload files to the media web part and creating an asset library, however; i'm trying to figure out where these files are being stored and the performance of the users.  I read the digital asset management library information on technet and couldn't find the exact answer i'm looking for.

So, here's my question:  If I want to upload 10 videos to the asset library, they each may have around 50mb or less for the file size, and we want 200 plus users to access it, will this affect the performance of when these users hit the site?  We want to display the video's without having to buy a media server.  And the main question that will be asked is, who will host the content?  And, where is it residing?  My guess is that tt will be hosted in SP 2010.

I'm trying to incorporate a new intranet portal site for my company that will have a video to be played on the home page of the intranet site and the links will be located on the left and right side of the page with the video webpart in the center.  Will using the Blob cache and bit throttling be sufficient for this request?  I think it will be, I just want to make sure before we role this out.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
