best way to move site from one server to another?

Posted By:      Posted Date: December 04, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I need to move one site (within a collection) from a development server to a production server.  Unfortunately, the site was used for quite a while and the amount of data in it makes it to large to save as a template with content.

Creating a Web Package (.fwp) is not an option as I need the data to go along with the site.

I read that a backup/restore (.cmp) does not include "some customizations and settings" as well as alerts.  Can anyone tell me what those type of customizations, and particularly settings these might be?

Also, if you know of another way to move a site, please let me know.

There are no mistakes; every result tells you something of value about what your are trying to accomplish.

calling a web service on a remote server from a ASPX page (web site project VS2005)

HI,I am maintaining a web site project in VS2005 and have to call a new web service on a remote server. I've done add web reference, and created the .wsdl and .discomap files in the app_webReference folder.  When I try to create a object representing the web service in the code ( wsnamespace.serviceName ws = new wsnamespce.serviceName(); ) the code wouldn't compile. The web site project is already calling other web services. When I right click on the type representing the web service and "go to definition" it takes me to a proxy class (derived from of course SoapHttpClientProtocol) in the metadata. I think this is what's missing for  the new web service i'm trying to call. Have I missed any steps? Thanks in advance.-me

Create a Site template with subsites in Sharepoint Server 2010

Hi, I'm with my first SharePoint project, and we are using server 2010 as a Document Management system. The thing is our company has about 300 customers, and we have to create 300 site collections, 1 per customer.  For each site collection, I use the blank site template, and it's very simple page, as I just need a document library in the home page, and then I need to create a subsite called "cases" and the inside profiles, the users create a document library for each case. For subsite I mean, I create a new site and I choose the option to share the top menu, so basically the site has 2 tabs. So basically what I need is a template that has 2 tabs, Home and Cases. Home with a document library in home and Cases empty. Is there a simple way to achieve this? I guess maybe I have to edit some XML files to create a Site Template. If this is the case, can someone point me to the right documentation. Second, I need to create a Visual Basic project so that the final user has a form, and he just inputs the Customer Name and the code must automatically create a new site with the template I metioned before. I guess that once I have the template this won't be very hard to achieve, as I have seen this SPSite class. The question is, can I have the template with the 2 tabs, o maybe I have to use 2 templates, and write code to create the home site and the Cases Subsite.. Ple

Same server farm administrator domain account for both Intranet and Internet Sharepoint site?

Hello,   We are planning to setup 2 streams of architecture for both Intranet and Internet web sites. Just wondering whether there is any best practices/security concerns if we are using the same domain account as the Server Farm Administrator for both Intranet and Internet platform?   Thanks,

"The Server could not complete your request" on trying to connect to a site or create a new site wit

I am trying out SharePoint Designer 2010 on windows 2008 with SharePoint 2010 beta installed. When I try to connect to a site or create a new site I get the error: "The server could not complete your request.  For more specific information, click the Details button." When I clicked the Details button it says "Object moved" on one line then on the next it says "Object moved to here". I wanted to see the new workflow stuff but I cannot connect to a site.

Purpose of initial "site" in SharePoint Server 2010 Express Install

I’m installing Search Server 2010 Express using “Farm” mode. After the SharePoint Configuration Wizard completes, and selecting  the SharePoint config wizard, one needs to create a website. What is that site intended for? Is it for the Search Center itself? (If so, then I better select the Enterprise – “Basic Search Center" template. If it is intended for a "normal" top level site, then I will create a new Search site in its own web app). TIA, Barkingdog

Move or Relocate Site(s)

Our developer built a site off of the Central Admin page, with the admin page located at: http://sp_server:8080/default.aspx and the main page of the site loacted at: http://sp_server:8080/Intranet/SitePages/Home.aspx. How do I disassociate the Central Admin page from the Main page, as well as change the port number to 80 for the main page? Thanks in advance. And yes. I'm a novice at these things. Tom

Move SharePoint 2010 Server/Services

I currently have a SharePoint 2010 Enterprise server running as a virtual machine.  I want to move this to a physical server that has more power to handle the load I've been throwing at it.  What is the best approach to take to accomplish this.  Ultimately, the current server will be completely gone when this is complete.  I am using shared services with a "MySite" configuration as well as the SharePoint Enterprise Search. I think I tried this when I was running MOSS 2007 and things didn't go so well, even though I backed out the original server properly, central admin still thought it had to go to the original server. I really need to move this bad.Dave Durand

Site built off of Central Administration. How to I move it?

Should I move ODBC Apps from the SQL Server driviver to SQL Server Native Client 10.0

I have a suite of applications written for SQL Server 2000 in Access 2000 and Access 2007 and running under Access 2007 (12.0.6423,1000 SP2 MSO 12.0.6425.1000) via ODBC with the SQL Server ODBC driver (2000.85.1132.00) under Windows XP Professional (2002 SP3).  I have maintained all the data modules in Access 2000 format so that they can be accessed by SQL Server 2008 if required and am gradully upgrading the data modules to SQL Server.  The server they are connected to is Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition (10.0.2531.0 running on a 32-bit Wndows Server 2008 Standard (SP2).  As a security improvement I intend to move a number of the applications to the server itself.  My choice of driver for ODBC is between SQL Server (6.00.6002.18005) and SQL Server Native Client 10.0 (2007.100.2531.00).  I have yet to discover any differences in application behavior or performance between the two interfaces My assumption is that I will have have fewer problems if I configure the ODBC links using the SQL Server driver.  However, I was wondering if there is a reason to gradually move them over to the SQL Server Native Client 10.0 driver. Thanks, Harry
