setup/deployment issues

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 27, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I have built an installation (MSI) for a project I'm designing. I'm using Visual Studio 2008.  Mostly it works fine; however, I have two issues:

1) for some reason, it insists on installing .NET 3.5, even though all the projects within the install use .NET 2.0. Is this because the installer requires 3.5? If so, I guess I can live with it.

2) I want one of the programs to run on startup, and actually, it does. I assigned the Primary Output of the program to the User's startup folder. HOwever, the install also copies the .config file to startup; so it launches it notepad, leaving the user looking at a config file they obviously shouldn't be seeing.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance...

Data Deployment: Streamline Your Database Setup Process with a Custom Installer

Database setup can be a tough and time-consuming process and sometimes fall victim to human error. Microsoft Installer or InstallShield can help, as can your own custom installer. In this article, the author tackles one approach to writing database installers and demonstrates the process with a working code sample.

Audience Setup issues

We have the UPS set to import various Security/Distribution groups from AD and I'm trying to set a Web Part to only display for members of a Group that contains "New Employees" only.

This seems to be something that should be possible, however the Audience filtering does not actually work.  And if I edit the web part again, the audience field contains a garbled description of the AD group name and an error below.

CN=NewEmployees,OU=Distribution Groups,DC=XXXXXXXXXXXX,DC=com

No exact match was found. Click the item(s) that did not resolve for more options.

Obviously, I've put XXXXX is in place of the actual Domain - though I'm not sure why this is not working as desired?

Difficulties with the .NET Famework Setup and Deployment

The Background: Some 2 years ago (Sep-Nov 2008) I downloaded  some .NET packages and the "2008 .NET Framework SDK QuickStart Configuration Details"suite. At that time, I had already the SP1,SP2 and SP3 installed. And then an illnes forced me to suspend all my computer activities, untill now.  A couple of month ago, I started  my computer activities by trying to activate the "2008 .NET Framework SDK QuickStart Configuration Details" until I reached a point where, according to the Installment requirements, I was directed to install the IIS that Is required by the .NET Framework. At some stage during the installation of the IIS package, the procedure stopped, indicating an error  while tryinf to load some .dll programs from a SP. The Question: I saw that there exists a new "2010.NET Framework SDK QuickStart Configuration Details"suite. Should I abamdon to try to correct the error that the "2008" package is causing and download the more updated "2010" hoping that it will behave better, or remain with the tricky "2008" ? . In that case I will reconstruct exactly the error and report it to you. can you help please. hotlub1.

Issues with SQL CLR deployment and debugging

We're having 3 issues.  I've posted a ticket with Microsoft phone support, but am posting here as well in case I can shortcut that support process, and so it will be documented for other users.  I'm running Windows XP, Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2010, and SQL Server 2008 with Management Studio version 10.0.2531.0:

1) In Visual Studio 2010 on my machine AND my coworkers' machines: If we try to deploy any SQL CLR project to a large database, the deploy hangs Visual Studio for a long time, and eventually returns but fails to deploy the objects to the database.  No error message is thrown.

2) In Visual Studio 2010 on my machine AND my coworkers' machines: if we create a new SQL Server Project, add a new User Defined Function that simply returns a scalar value, put a breakpoint in that function, attach to the sqlservr.exe process from Visual Studio 2010, and then run the function from SQL Server Management Studio, the breakpoint is not hit and the function hangs until the debugger is stopped, at which point SQL Server Management Studio indicates that the query was cancelled.  We can work around this by debugging in Visual Studio 2008, but it's a hassle (i.e. start a different project debugging in Visual Studio 2008.  Open the files you want to debug in the same Visual Studio 2008 instance (even though they were created in

VB2008 Express and SQL Server CE 3.5 private deployment issues

Windows Forms application developed with VB 2008 Express.
Using private deployment as described in SQL Server Books Online.
Deploying SQL CE version 3.5.8080.0.
Development system is 32 bit Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 version 6.1.7601.65536.
System installed SQL CE version is 3.5.8080.0.

For several months of development there have been no issues with this setup.  A month or so ago I began getting an occasional error message while making updates to the application in the development environment.  The message dialog would come in waves of three several minutes apart and would subside once I rebuilt the project.  The error message is "Unable to load the native components of SQL Server Compact corresponding to the ADO.NET provider version 8080".
The application uses a designer generated DataSet.  While trying to add an additional TableAdapter from the DataSet to the main form the above mentioned error dialog, for which I would click OK, would try to prevent changes from being made.  After several design environment restarts and restoring the impacted form.Designer.vb and .resx files I could finally complete making changes in the form designer.

The changes in the designer were not carried over into the

How to setup a Mobile Browser Emulator in Windows Mobile 6:

In the following tutorial, I cover the process of Setting up Windows Mobile 6 for Mobile Browser Emulation using the Microsoft Device Emulator. This enables a user to experience Windows Mobile 6 on a PC via Emulation without even owning a Windows Mobile 6 product. It can be a great way to test drive Windows Mobile 6 before purchasing a product with it installed. In our case, it allowed us to Emulate Windows Mobile Browsing so that we could optimize our sites for the Mobile viewing audience. Installation and Emulation is simple and fairly straight forward.

Can this code be setup to run against the whole database instead of just 1 record at a time?

We have made some changes to this code to start capturing 1 new field of data and updating it as new records are added. But there is currently about 120,000 records more or less.. those records of course dont have the new field populated with anything..

We would like to run this logic that already in place and run it against the tables to update the fields 1 time. I think to make it easier, if it can be setup to expect the "valueTwo" variable, so that we can run it againt the individual codes instead of doing all the records at one time.. there are codes that only have a few records, so it would be best to test initially against the small code group.

            strSqual = "insert into trans (trans_type_name, trans_date,sys_id,mod_user_id,show_ind, remoteCode, techName) values('" & valueTwo & "','" & TransDate & "',"&strSystemID&", 1,'T', '" & dbQuote(strUser) & "', '" & strTechName & "')"
'get the new transaction_id out for just inserted alarm
strSqual = "select max(transaction_id) as transaction_id from trans"
            set rst = getStaticRecordSet(strSqual)

Debugging ASHX after deployment

I'm finished with a part of my ASHX handler and need to test it against the software that'll be calling it using HTTP POST. The software required an https url so I created an internally hosted site in IIS and published the project there.

Question now is how do I do any debugging on the script to see what data is coming out of it before the data goes back into the software that's calling it? Do I set something on the project itself to be able to step into the published DLL?

Best Way to Upgrade Using Web Setup Project

Hi there,

I am using VS2005.

I don't have much experience with web setup projects, but I now need to create a decent windows installer in order to allow customers to install one of our web applications. I have created a simple web setup project and it works fine, but not when it comes to upgrades of the application.

If for instance I install version 1.0 on a machine, and then later I try to install version 2.0, I don't seem to have the control that I would like... I can specify in the web setup project that the installer must enforce an uninstall of previous version, but then all application files and logs are uninstalled as well. If I let the application just install itself over the older version, it seems to leave some old DLL's there - it then causes issues in the application because DLL version conflicts.

My basic requirement is that I would like th installer to upgrade the old version with all the files required, but leave any application and log files in tact - this way the customer won't have to reconfigure the application after install.

What is the best way to handle this?
