Localization .RESX files - How to work with translators

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 27, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I understand I need to place all the translated strings in .RESX files. How do I work with translators??? I do not think they will be able to open RESX files? Please advise your existing method of working with them. They mostly know Word... :)

Translating RESX files

So I took the Forums advice and made a separate RESX file for each ASPX page in my web app. Personally, I wanted to put all of my language strings into a single global RESX file, but instead I did it the 'right' way and made a separate one for each ASPX. So now Ive got about 100 different RESX files with 5 to 15 short strings of text each. Many of them are repeats. The question is, how can I export these 100 RESX files into one single spreadsheet that I can send off for translation to other languages? Whats the normal way to do that? I dont want to send the translating company 100 little files, I'd rather send just one big one. And I'd like to omit duplicate text strings (for example, "Cancel" appears in at least 50 of the RESX files - I dont want to pay for that word to be translated 50 times).

Creating and translating culture resx files

My customer has 140 German resx files in different folders that he wants us to translate.   He wants us to provide culture specific resource files (en-gb) and has provided us with “Windows Resource Localization Editor” to translate the files with.   He wants the culture specific resource files to only contain strings we translate and anything we don’t translate will fallback to the Neutral/Default culture being the German resx file.   This seems to work well in the “Windows Resource Localization Editor” as only edited/translated strings are added to the translated resx file en-gb.resx   The problem is that we don’t want to use “Windows Resource Localization Editor” as we want to use a tool that allows for side by side translation and utilizes Translation Memory so we can stay consistent when translating the Help and Doc.   Most of the localization tools that we want to work with would just import the Neutral resx and output a copy of the Neutral file but with the strings translated. But as I said the client doesn't want to have too much unnecessary information in the culture specific resx.   My client doesn’t know much about the localization capabilities of Visual Studio and I don’t know anything about Visual Studio. When we have translated for other clients in the past they have just pr

How to manually set which localization file (resx) to load up depending on user

Database snapshots do not work well with databases having multiple log files

It appears there is a bug in the implementation of database snapshots.

If you create a snapshot on a database with multiple log files:

Then restore from the snapshot:

then all of you log files, but one will disappear. As a result the backup command will fail with the following message:
Msg 3636, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
An error occurred while processing 'BackupMetadata' metadata for database id 12 file id 10.
Msg 3046, Level 16, State 2, Line 1

Edited maintenance plan as dtsx now log files don't work

Hi all - any help would be appreciated

We created a standard maintainance plan via MS management with logging to text files. - working fine

I added a custom connection to a folder for manual backup of all ssis packages - Manage Connections no longer works via MS.

Imported the Maintplan into VS Solution - Edited connections and turned on SQL server logging

imported back into Integration services (MSDB/MaintPlans) - Log files are no longer being created.

Checked the "Reporting Task for subplan-{CEF4A469-AD4E-4762-B8F7-C3598E732AEE}" - it will not run in VS. and failed in the overnight job

Any ideas?

I have set the maximum and minimum value in page load as below in the english form

Heres how i have set the values

The reading of visual fox pro files (.dbf) does not work if the server has more that 1 GB of RAM

I am reading .dbf files using openrowset instructions, but it does not work if the files are bigger that 250MB. I been looking a lot for information and doing tests. At the end I tested with all my development enviroment mounted in a virtual machine and I discovered something really rare. If the RAM assigned to de virtual machine is 1 GB, the openrowset query works fine, no matter how big is the .dbf file(I tested with 1.5 GB files and it works fine). So my question is if somebody knows if is necesary some special configurations in SQL Server 2005 for to work in a server with 4 processors and 4 GB of RAM. The error message that appears when the server memory exceeds 1 GB is the next:

Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
El proveedor OLE DB "MSDASQL" para el servidor vinculado "(null)" informó de un error. El proveedor no proporcionó información acerca del error.
Msg 7320, Level 16, State 2, Line 1

the query is the next:

Editing RESX Files

Hi all,

I am able to read resx files present in App_LocaResources folder using ResXResourceReader

i am trying to edit the resouse values using ResXResourceWriter, but it seems ResXResourceWriter has only ways to add new resources , is there any way or woraround using which i can edit resource key values using ResXResourceWriter?

Modifying using its XML structure is way to do it, bui is there any way that RESX files can be modified directly using ResXResourceWriter?

Thanks in advance

SHRINKFILE doesn't work for some log files

Hello all,

I am trying to use DBCC SHRINKFILE(log file, size) to shrink randomly some log files and I don't want to backup the log files to impact normal backup sequence. But the shrink operation fails. I know that the problem might be related to the end of the log file having data. Please let me know if you know a solution?

Why does localization with .resx need repeated keys? or does it really?

I have for quite some time localized a website with the resx files. But time after time, I keep wondering why I have to repeat the key/name for the label (or resource) that I make for the different languages. The name column in the resource files work as a primary key would in a database, but with resx files we need to write the 'primary key' again in all the files - with a good chance of errors.

Can someone explain to me why this name/'primary key' of the resx files is not fixed for all resx files? There is such a big chance that in one resx file you make a typo in the name of the resource and then it does not work for that particular language - or that you even forget to put one of the labels into the language file.

Thanks for the input - and I am all ears if there is a better way to do it!

Clean Web.Config Files (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

.NET 4 includes a new version of the CLR, and a new .NET 4 specific machine.config file (which is installed side-by-side with the one used by .NET 2, .NET 3 and .NET 3.5).

The new .NET 4 machine.config file now automatically registers all of the ASP.NET tag sections, handlers and modules that we've added over the years, including the functionality for:

.ASP.NET Dynamic Data
.ASP.NET Routing (which can now be used for both ASP.NET WebForms and ASP.NET MVC)
.ASP.NET Chart Control (which now ships built-into ASP.NET V4)
What this means is that when you create a new "Empty ASP.NET application" project in VS 2010, you'll find that the new default application-level web.config file is now clean and simple:

RadioButton inside GridView, How to get it work as normal

Did you tried before to drag a RadioButton control inside a Gridivew templatefield, and then you attempt to select these RadioButtons , you will notice that the behavior of RadioButton control will be changed and it will work just like the behavior of checkbox control! the user will be able to select more than one radiobutton in the grid!

SharePoint Localization Tips and Tricks

In this article, I'll round up the scattered pieces of information about localization in SharePoint, provide some tips and tricks and leave you with a working approach to localization. However, before we work on meeting the challenge, we should understand it.

SharePoint document migration challenges when migrating files and folders

There are several challenges when migrating documents to Microsoft SharePoint. While these challenges can be overcome, they are a real pain if the migration source, content and file systems are not SharePoint friendly.

Combine, minify and compress JavaScript files to load ASP.NET pages faster

Websites are getting more interactive these days and most of this interactivity comes from JavaScript. People are using different JavaScript libraries and frameworks to make their websites more interactive and user friendly.
