sql server 2008 import/export wizard... completely useless??

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 27, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

import/export wizard in 2000 had lots of options.

I could copy databases without a care in the world. Including constraints, stored proc., AND the data, etc.

Now, with v2008, the wizard is dumbed down too much. It's a "stupid" copy function that fails on the first constraint it meets.

"Copy database.." is not an option here: it needs sysadmin on both source and destination server.

Re-adding the constraints manually is not an option either: the database is WAY too large.

I'm actually hoping there is a temporary bug in the import/export wizard. Each option (and you have THREE...) returns with a new error.

Googling, I found I am not alone:

This post is exactly my situation. Here's what his post says: (bolded key parts)

I'm trying to get used to sql server 2008 having been forced to upgrade by my isp. I need to back up my key db on a weekly remote schedule, so have been trying to use ssms to export data from my remote db to a local copy.

Firstly I created a new empty db on the local machine. Then I scripted the structure of the db on the remote machine and ran the resulting query on the local machin

Sql Server 2008 import and export wizard is failing

Sql Server 2008 import and export wizard is failing with the message: \

The ‘DbProviderFactories’ section can only appear once per config file. (System.Configuration)

This wizard will close because it encountered the following error: (Microsoft SQL Server)

This happens when I hit the “Next” button on the initial import/export wizard startup screen.

The detailed error message is below.  Any ideas on the location of the configuration file that the change needs to be made to?

SQL Server Import/Export Wizard Crashes

Whenever I try to import or export data using SQL Server Import And Export Wizard, everything is great until I click on the "Finish" button.

The wizard gets to the "Setting Source Connection" step and at 0% complete, I get the message "SQL Server Import and Export Wizard Has Encountered A Problem And Needs To Close."  This happens every time I run the Wizard, whether it be from SSMS, BIDS, or the file manager.  It doesn't matter what type of database table/file I import to or export from.

If I select to Debug, I get this message:  "Windows Has Triggered A Breakpoint In DTSWizard.exe.  This may be due to a corruption of the heap, and indicates a bug in DTSWizard.exe or any of the DLL's it has loaded.  The output window may have more diagnostic information."  Here is the output:

Upgrade to SQL 2008 RS lost SSIS and ability to save Export/Import Wizard

About a month ago I upgraded from SQL Server 2005 Express to SQL Server 2008 R2.  The platform is a 2003 Server.  All was working well for about 3 weeks when last week I knoticed that I was unable to save an Import/Export Wizard that I just set up and opening up SSIS is no longer an option.  Should I simply re-install the software?  Any reason as to why it should have happened?  I deleted the installation of SQL Server Express 2005 after I sucessfully installed SQL Server 2008 R2.

"SQL Server Import and Export Wizard" (SQL 2005) Excel & ISAM

When I run the “SQL Server Import and Export Wizard” (SQL 2005) on my laptop, I attempt to import an EXCEL file to a table.

If I try both Excel-2007 and Excel-2010 format files, I get the following error.

“The operation could not be completed” “Could not find installable ISAM. (Microsoft JET Database Engine)”

import/export wizard crashes on SQL Express 2008 R2 installed on Windows 7 (32-bit)

I have been getting "Unexpected Unrecoverable Error; Abort, Retry, Ignore" when using the SQL Import/Export Wizard in the following scenarios (these are the only two ways I have tried using the Wizard):

1) Source Advantage OLE DB Provider, destination SQL Server, copy tables

2) Source Microsoft Excel, destination SQL Server, copy tables, show report if there were any failures

I have run the SQL Setup Repair and still get the same behavior.  Are there known issues with SQL Express 2008 R2 on Windows 7 for Import/Export?

Thanks, David

Database Export Wizard for ASP.net and SQL Server

A step wizard for ASP.net to export database objects to CSV, TXT, HTML, XML, or SQL. it guides users through a few simple steps to choose a database object (table, view, or query), select columns, and export the data in any of the standard formats CSV, HTML, XML, or SQL.

SSIS Import/Export Wizard: "Unexpected Unrecoverable Error"

For whatever reason, whenever the SSIS Import/Export Wizard needs to display an error message, it throws up "Unexpected Unrecoverable Error" instead. The three buttons - Abort, Retry, and Ignore - all cause the wizard to close. I see some activity in Process Monitor that looks like DTSWizard.exe is probing around for some System.Web assemblies, and not finding them. I'm running 2008 SP1 on Win 7 x86, and I've reinstalled the client tools and Integration Services. Anybody else seen this issue? Should I file a report on Connect?

Import Excel data into SQL Server express 2008

I have recently installed SQL express 08 and created a table to import excel data into.  Im running on a windows 7 64 bit OS i5 processor.  I've disabled the firewall (temporarily) and will set the necessary ports once this is working. SQL Server 2008 Dev edition, from XP SP3 - says uninstalled completely, but not...

Despite what it says, not only did it not uninstall, the installation size, per "add or remove programs", increased by 700MB as a result of the uninstall.   Running the uninstall again... and again, no errors (so far). Anybody see anything like this?

SQL SERVER 2005 - problem with Import Wizard

I am importing some tables from a MS Access to SQL server 2005 and I am using the import wizard but I am not seeing the data mapping tool, I need to have the ability to delete the data from the destination server and allow the identity.  I had done many times in the past, but I just got a new computer and I installed the SQL server 2005 workstation in it.  Is a setting that I need to change? that will allow me to have the data mapping.

Thanks a lot

Import and Export Data (32-bit) Wizard to Dump Data to Excel

I am trying to export some data from a simple three-column table on my SQL 2008 R2 instance to Excel 2007 (also happens in Excel 2003). Our data has a lot of foreign (Hebrew) characters on it and although the copy works ok, the data as it appears in Excel is gibberish.

The source table in SQL contains three columns:

  • smallint - numbers
  • varchar(30) - hebrew text
  • varchar(50) - hebrew text
  • varchar(15) - hebrew text

When I fire up the Import-Export wizard I see the following: http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/1830/sqltable.png. When I click on the yellow warning for a conversion problem, I see this: http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/4255/conversion.png.

Do I need to modify the core SQL or change the data type? I already tried modifying the destination datatype to be varchar instead of LongText but that didn't help.

Any assistance would be fantastic!

SQL Server 2005/2008 COPY Database Through Wizard

Let's start a very intresting thread here:

As you all know moving the database from one server(2000, 2005, 2008) to (2000, 20005, 20008) is not a big deal and can be done in many ways  like backup-restore, attcah-detach, and most easy (some time very complex:-)).

Here i wanna discuss an issue which i have faced.

I have two instances of SQL server 2008, i have created a new database Test in one instance, created few logins and mapped to  Test database with some permissions for this Test database.

Now i used copy database wizard to copy this test database to other instance, i sucessfully went through the wizard and selected SQL server object method to copy the Test database in other instance then i followed the remaing wizard, i selected the logins which i have created for the Test database and finnaly i reached the finish button i clicked finished and the copy of database completed sucessfully. I verified that Test dabase was there in other instance with the logins which i have created. So easy i was happy:-)

Problem: Some other day i wanted to copy AdventureWork database to the other instance of SQl server i was happy that its a very easy task i followed the same steps above(to copy the Test database ) and every thing went in the same way and i clicked finish to complete the wizard it took some time

How to Import Excel Data into SQL Server 2008(64 bit) Using SQL Query (in Windows Server 2008 64bit

I am developing VB .Net application in Visual Studio 2008(64bit), SQL Server 2008(64bit) and Windows Server 2008(64bit) environment.

I need to import an Excel and Flat files data into SQL Server database using SQL Query. I tried a lot with the following SQL Queries directly with SQL Server Management Studio,

1. SELECT * INTO dbo.ExcelImportTest FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=D:\PTPLDCT\DCT Test Datasource\DCT_Excel_Test_Sample_1.xls',
'select * from [Sheet1$]')

While executing i got an error as below,

Msg 7403, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" has not been registered.

2. I have also tried with MSDASQL provider,

Select * from openrowset('MSDASQL','Driver={Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls)};
Dbq=DCT_Excel_Test_Sample_1.xls;DefaultDir=D:\PTPLDCT\DCT Test Datasource\', 'Select * from [Sheet1$]')

Then i encountered the following error,

OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified".
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)".

3. Finally i have tried the Query with Linked Server,

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = '
