SSMS 2005 on Win XP won't start, no errors

Posted By:      Posted Date: November 20, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Some time in the last couple weeks, SQL Server Management Studio 2005 (NOT Express) stopped working on my Windows XP SP3 system. I made no changes that I'm aware of. When I open the program, it gives me a working in the background cursor for a couple seconds and then nothing happens. Same thing if I change to the directory and try to start SQLWB.EXE. The cursor changes for a couple seconds like it's going to start and then nothing. There's no errors in the event log and no error message or dialog box.

I don't remember how I installed it since it's been a couple years already. I think it was from the standard SQL Server 2005 install but the location of the files may have changed. As typical for SQL Server, any attempt to uninstall without having the exact conditions and files it was installed with is a total nightmare and it fails.

Bootstrapper: Use the Visual Studio 2005 Bootstrapper to Kick-Start Your Installation

There are plenty of times when you need to get information on running processes, not the least of which is during performance tuning. Using the techniques in this article and special .NET classes you'll see how to get a process' ID, name, priority, number of threads, kernel handle, and memory consumption, as well as its user-mode, kernel-mode, and total elapsed running time and put them to use in a custom app called AssemblyBrowser.

Reinstalled SQL 2005 on cluster won't start.

OS: Windows Server 2003 32-bit. Cluster: 2-node Active/Passive We're working on upgrading from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008, and we're using this cluster to test the cluster upgrade/install procedures. So, updated the existing SQL 2005 instance to SQL 2008. This went fine. Added an additional SQL 2008 instance. This went fine. Uninstalled SQL 2008 (both instances) from both nodes. This went fine. Installed SQL 2005 (clustered setup). At the end of the install process, received a message about unable to do (something). However, the install reported successful. In the SQL0001_<computername>_Core(local) are these messages: Running: OpenPipeAction at: 2010/7/24 10:20:31 Complete: OpenPipeAction at: 2010/7/24 10:20:31, returned false Error: Action "OpenPipeAction" failed during execution. and much later: Error: Action "UninstallForRS2000Action" failed during execution.  Error information reported during run: Action: "UninstallForRS2000Action" will be marked as failed due to the following condition: In the SQL0001_<computername>_Core.log: Running: LaunchLocalBootstrapAction at: 2010/7/24 10:11:30 Error: Action "LaunchLocalBootstrapAction" threw an exception during execution.  Error information reported during run: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\setup.exe" finished and returned: 0 Aborting que

Cannot start SQL Server 2005

Hi;I've been using SQL Server 2005 on vista and everything was fine until today. I cannot start the SQL Server service from the services list; it gives the error "Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) on Local Computer....., and refer to service-specific error code -2146885628.". I looked at the evet log; the first error message is "FallBack certificate initialization failed with error code 1." then an information message: "Unable to initialize SSL encryption because a valid certificate could not be found, and it is not possible to create a self-signed certificate.".I've created many test certificates till now (to test WCF services security features) using makecert.exe and nothing went wrong; the last certificate I made was named "localhost"; so I thought there's a problem because of that; I deleted that certificate but still cannot start SQL Server.Any help is appreciated. Thanks-AA

How to start SQL Server 2005 (Visual Studio 2008)

I am just starting to work with Visual Studio 2008 (VB) to creat WPF apps and am trying to work with sql server. I want to create databases on my computer to be used with single client applications. When I try to see if the server is running it doesn't appear to be. Is there some special process that I need to do to start the server so I can create some sample databases to work with in Visual Studio? Working with Windows XP, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005.

SQL Server 2005 and SSMS 2008

Hi folks

All am asking is, can SQL Server management studio express 2008 work on VS 2008 with SQL Server 2005 database? to administer it.

The SQL Server(2005 express) service failed to start. Error 29503

Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition -- Error 29503. The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
The error is  (1067) The process terminated unexpectedly.

Initially the SQL Server was running over there, later one day it stopped. When trying to start manually I got "The process terminated unexpectedly" error. Tthen I uninstalled it and tried to install again, but got "Error 29503. The SQL Server service failed to start" error while installation and installation rolled back. If I install it using Local System and without "Enable User Instance" I get same error but after multiple retry it started. However my desktop application is not running and giving error message "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure process for the user instance. The connection will be closed".

I tried "sp_Configure .......... " and "Reconfigure" to enable user instance but still got "Failed to generate......" error.

Another problem is that SQL Server service starts in multiple retry.

I have tried most of the forum solutions however I am still getting the same error in my desktop application. Mos

I went through the whole log but I couldnt figure out anything in this. Can anyone help us out trying to figure out whats wrong by checking this below.
Its been a week I am trying to figure out whats going on.

Is there a way to start SQL Agent from Transact-SQL or SSMS?

Using SQL Server 2008 is there a way to start the SQL Agent service using T-SQL? I don't have remote desktop permissions to that server or I would try to start it from there. While connected to the server in SSMS, in object explorer, if I right-click on the The SQL Server Agent label I see the start and stop options but they are greyed-out. Why?

Server 2005 won't start - get 1814 error

I am not a database guy, but am trying to get this issue resolved.  Yesterday I got a call that nobody could connect to our databases.  I checked the services and saw that the SQL server service wasn't running, and when I tried to start it manually, I'm getting a 1814 error.

I did see that trying a sqlservr -f might shed some light on the problem, so I've attached the output of that.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be most grateful.....

Thanks,
Steve

SQL server 2005 cluster - second node - sql service will not start - node is showing down in cluster

I am tryng to get the second node in a two node cluster to start sql services and come up in the cluster.  The second node was configured and running in a cluster when at some point, the sql service and/or cluster service went down.  Now the node will not start...as in SQL service fails and the system log error is:

"The disk associated with cluster disk resource 'Disk Q:' could not be found. The expected signature of the disk was BF17D33C. If the disk was removed from the server cluster, the resource should be deleted. If the disk was replaced, the resource must be deleted and created again in order to bring the disk online. If the disk has not been removed or replaced, it may be inaccessible at this time because it is reserved by another server cluster node."

and the Application log shows:

Error 2(The system cannot find the file specified.) occurred while opening file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf' to obtain configuration information at startup. An invalid startup option might have caused the error. Verify your startup options, and correct or remove them if necessary.

I had to edit the startup parameters on the second node because it appears it cannot "see" the original path, which was a network driv

Can't log into a SQL Server 2005 Integration Services with SSMS 2008.

Hi;
We have a server running SQL Server 2005 Ent on a Windows Server 2003 platform. It runs just fine and I have no problem accessing any of the Business Intelligence services using SSMS 2005.

I recently upgraded my development PC to SQL Server 2008 as we'll be deploying it to our production servers in the next few days. I am able to access the Database Engine, SSAS and SSRS on the 2005 server with SSMS 2008, but when I try to log into Integration Services, I get the following error:

TITLE: Connect to Server
Cannot connect to servername.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&LinkId=20476

Connect to SSIS Service on machine "servername." failed:
Class not registered

Luckily I did not uninstall SSMS 2005, so I can still access it from there, but it would be nice if I could use just one client. I'm also afraid that this might happen after the production server gets upgraded.

Thanks in advance for any help in resolving this.

Thanks Ron...

Can not create table via SSMS 2005 GUI even with dbowner rights (I can via ddl script)

I have SQL server 2005 client with SP3 (Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio      9.00.4035.00).

Back end database is SQL server 2008 SP2

I can create/alter a table via sql script.
In the SSMS Database Designer (GUI), When I right click on the database >> Tables and select New Table I get the following error - "Unspecified Error. MS Visual Database Tools."

I was able to use SSMS 2008 client to create tables with out any issues. Looks like a compatibility issue between SSMS 2005 and SS 2008 server.  Has anyone seen this issue and if yes is there a fix for it ?

Thanks

Connect SQL Server 2005 SSMS to SQL Server 2008

SQL Server 2005 fails to start after install on Server 2008 R2 SP1 64-bit

New install of Server 2008 R2 64-bit upgraded to SP1.

I have SQL Server 2005, no matter how I install it, it fails to start the main SQL Service giving me the error:

"The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually.""

It then rolls back just that portion of the install and completes the install. I thought the following article might be the ticket, but no matter which SQL Server 2005 SP I try this with or which method they describe (reducing processor count, etc), I get the same error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954835/en-us

Is it SP1 on Server 2008 R2 that is the problem? I have found various articles online speaking of pretty much the same issue, but these are posted before SP1 and people seem to be able to get things working.

Any thoughts?

Cannot start SSIS of SQL Server 2005 9.00.1399.

The SSIS of SQL Server 2005 (9.00.1399) cannot be started.  I suspect that some files in the DTS\BINN may not be the right version.  The MsDtsSrvr.exe has product version 9.00.3042.  How to troubleshoot/correct this type of problem?
