Help - uanble to Debug Feature Receiver with VS2010 on SP2010 Farm

Posted By:      Posted Date: November 20, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

HI,

I am unable to debug the feature receiver using VS2010. I Changed the Active Deployment Configuration from Default to No Activation. Set the breakpoint and press F5, I get the below error

 "Unable to start debugging on the web server. The Microsoft Visual Studio Remote Debugging Monitor (MSVSMON.EXE) does not appear to be running on the remote computer. "

 We are running VS2010 on x64 bit Windows2008 server and the farm has 1 App server, 1 WFE server and 1 sql server.

I would really appreciate any help regarding this.

Thanks!

Why feature with event receiver doesn't activate properly after site provisioning?

Hi!

I have defined feature with event receivers for my document library and for users List .

I try to activate my feature in onet.xml in section <WebFeatures>. After provisioning a new site from onet.xml  all work fine and my feature is shown as activated, but event receivers doesn't fire. It fires only after reactivating my feature (deactivate, then activate it again). But I need my feature works immediately after site provisioning without deactivating and activating it again. Who knows how to solve this problem?

Path too long packaging or deploying SP2010 solutions in VS2010

I'm regularly getting "Error 2 The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters" building projects with VS2010 for SP2010. I've done what I can to reduce the length of the path but unfortunately I have rules for the namespaces I must use. This is really frustrating and causing issues for our team trying to meet our business requirements. Is there any way to improve this situation apart from shortening the paths? (Similar to this post for the RC build: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/sharepoint2010programming/thread/36D35235-6736-410F-ACC6-03C0BDCC4FE2) Thanks, Alex.Alex Angas - http://www.alexangas.com/blog

How to debug feature activation by PowerShell

Hello, I got a bunch of wsp files with double the number features from my visual studio 2010 solution. So now I'm using PowerShell to add and install the wsp files to my server and to activate the features for the target site. In Visual Studio 2010 rightlicking and hitting "deploy" works perfectly fine while the PowerShellscript fails with a NullReferenceException. Is there a way to locate the error? I've tried to debug the PowerShell process but when VS2010 opens up to debug the process I get an empty window without any code. I'm using a Windows Server 2008 R2, SharePoint 2010 RTM and Visual Studio 2010 RTM.

Unable to debug Workflow in VS2010

I have a minimal sequential workflow created in Visual Studio 2010 which I cannot run in debug mode. I have created the workflow using the template in VS2010. When running the project in debug mode the breakpoint mark changes from full red circle to empty circle with exclamation mark. The tooltip message is: "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document" I am able to debug webparts deployed onto the same Sharepoint site using VS2010. Environment: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Sharepoint 2010, Visual Studio 2010 Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Claudiu

Azure ASP.Net VS2010 Timeouts during debug

Hi All,I've converted an ASP.Net website over to an Azure version and I've got it up and running. However the vast majority of the time I experience timeouts when I'm trying to debug the application.This seems to happen on any page at any time. I start debugging from VS2010 and sometimes the home page will come up sometimes it hangs. When it does come up if I select an item from a drop down list sometimes it works somtimes it times out. I have breakpoints set and they don't even fire I just eventually get the time out. If I hit refresh that sometimes seems to fix it but it eventually starts happening again. This is making the completion of the conversion VERY difficult and I'm starting to creep up to a deadline.Does anyone have any idea what might be happening? If there is a better location I can post this question to would someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction?Thanks in advance for any help and in addition my email is mgorgone@pictureu.com as our Windows Live account email is diff. Cheers,Mike

Running code after site definition site creation in a event receiver or feature receiver

Hi guys I've got a site definition which is pretty much based on STS.This is it's own sharepoint project. Let's call this project SiteDefProj. Next in another SharePoint project (same solution though). Let's call this CustomListProject. In this project I've got a feature which provisions a bunch of lists based on custom content types - this feature is a site scoped. Let's call this feature: CustomListInstances. I have added a feature receiver to this feature to execute some custom code on the lists themselves (under feature activated) In my ONET.XML (part of the SiteDefProj) I have CustomListInstances feature ID as part of my <sitefeatures>. When I do a create site I can actually step through the code and see it actually being executed but after the site is created the list instances are created but it's like the code never run or did anything. The weird part is that stepping through the code while creating a site collection using my SiteDefProj the code runs great with no errors. All lists are there and the code runs smooth. If I manually create a STS site and activate my feature everything works and the code does actually run and the effects are visible after the feature is created. Again I can actually step through it in debug. My suspicion is that there's some sort of a race condition in the CREATE SITE functionality where maybe the web or site collection hol

Profile EMM fields error when using Mysites cross farm (SP2010 RTM)

Hi,

I have a question that took me a while already. I set up an evironment at a Customer of mine as following:

2 farms:

Farm 1 (publishing farm (PF)):
Service applications (User profile and metadata services)

Farm 2 (consuming farm (CF)):
Webapplications (my.portal.nl webapplication).

I published all the services on the PF and succesfully made a connection to the service throughout the CF. The mysite host location is created under the my.portal.nl webapp.

Everything seems to work perfect. The only thing that doesn't work is the following: When I open the my site host and want to edit my profile properties all the fields that need keywords or metadata are not reachable. When I put the my site host location on the publishing farm --> IT WORKS....

I get the red error beneath every EMM field that says: "the service is temporarily disabled...."

I believe I missed a configuration step somewhere in de connection part between the webapp and the service app when going cross farm????

I think problem is somewhere in the combination of Cross farm, Managed Metadata and User profile service....

Can anybody help me with this problem??

Thanks in advance!

Greetz,

Roy.

How do you deploy a feature for sp2010 containing a whole branding solution?

Im attempting to create a sharepoint project, with one module containing a master page, stylesheet, theme and images to provide a clean, accessible and reuseable feature with this complete rebranding solution!

But im finding that i get an error when the deployment tries to activate the feature, i will want to move on from this when it finally works and create event recievers to setup the files to automatically install and use the template and themes files with a stylesheet.

Error: Error occurred in deployment step 'Activate Features': Feature with Id '{ID HERE}' is not installed in this farm, and cannot be added to this scope.

VS2010 and WPF slow debug issues

hi all,

im (like a lot of other people) doing my first steps in vs2010.

one of the things i just found which really annoys me is that each time i try to debug a WPF application the ide slows down so each movement from one statement to the other results in 10 sec. (!) waiting.

what can i do ? is there a nice solution (besides not using WPF:)

Adding a DWP web part file as feature in VS2010

Hi All,

I have added a dwp file as feature in MOSS 2007 using WSP Builder plenty of times, however, in VS2010, I have tried doing this but cannot achieve it. How would I add a DWP web part file as a feature in VS2010. I tried creating a TEMPLATE->FEATURES folder in VS2010 and added elements.xml, feature.xml and dwp file but cant add it. I am using the SharePoint 2010 template that comes with VS2010.

Thoughts?

What is the difference in .feature and Feature.Template in SP2010?What is the significance of each?

How to Debug with VS 2010 32 Bit an SP2010 FeatureReceiver on "Windows 7" 64 bit machine

Hi

I'm feel that debugging is basic problem that every developer might be facing when doing SharePoint 2010 Development on Windows 7 (64 bit Env) with Visual Studio 2010 Utilmate.

I'm new to SP2010 Development, following is my configurations

1. Windows 7 64 bit Professional, x64-based PC

2. Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate

3. My SharePoint project is targeted to .NET 3.5 Framework.

I've created a simple Package which has feature (along with featurereceiver)) when i activate this feature receiver i get an error. I want to debug this but when i attach to W3Wp.exe process, the break point says that No Symbol loaded.

So here is what i tried.

1. Tried uninstalling the dll from GAC, but failed it says "Access Denied" -> check the resolution for it everyone says you need to be logged in as local administrator which i'm already. how to uninstall the dll from GAC in this case.

2. I tried Gacutil for uninstalling but again it doesn't work.

3. Tried installutil /u "assembly"  (Under run as administrator mode) it says that Uninstall complete but when i hook up Assembly folder i see my Dll lying :-( no luck.<

Weird error when creating a site from a feature receiver

Hello everybody

I'm writing a feature in a sandboxed solution (scope of the feature : Web)

I've added to that feature a feature receiver that is supposed to create a subsite in the site in which it has been activated.

Here is the code

public override void FeatureActivated(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties)
    {
      string url="";
      using (SPWeb site = properties.Feature.Parent as SPWeb)
      {
        try
        {
          site.Title = "root";
          SPWebTemplateCollection webTemplates = site.Site.RootWeb.GetAvailableWebTemplates(site.Language);
          url = site.IsRootWeb ? "subnews" : site.ServerRelativeUrl.Substring(1) + "/subnews";

          SPWebTemplate webTemplate = (from SPWebTemplate t

Integrating ASP.Net application in to MOSS 2007 to utilize SharePoint Enterprise Search Feature can be done by using Business Data Search.

VS2010 Professional .NET 4.0 Remote Debugging ASP Website Project

Trying to remote debug ASP website from VS2010 Pro to Windows Server 2003 machine.  Specifically, trying to debug a Web Service, but breakpoint says, "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document."  This happens for all compiled code though.  I have read this is due to missing PDB files and the work around is to manually copy them, as noted here.  Problem is, I cannot find any PDB files for my project, except referenced libraries, which I can remote debug.

Verified

  • web.config has <compilation debug="true">
  • Debugger is attached to wewp.exe process on remote server
  • Installed VS2010 remote debugger from DVD (as I can remote debug referenced libraries)

This is beyond frustrating.  I migrated my code from VS2008 .Net3.5 to VS2010 .Net4.0 to take advantage of the inherent multithreading framework.  Debugging works when using local host and was stable until deployment to test server.

Thanks in advance,

Anthony
