IIS - sharepoint/default website port number confusion

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 27, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I have MOSS 2007 installed with IIS V7.

My default web site port is 80. When I created a new web application for my main sharepoint portal I also set it to 80. So obviously now the default web site port shows as stopped in IIS and it won't start.

What are the best practices. Should I change the port number for my portal to something else? I mean is it even a good idea to have sharepoint on port 80? If so, how do I go about changing the port number for my portal site?

any help appreciated.

Use Report Builder 3.0 with SharePoint site using a port number

We are currently working with SSRS R2 and SharePoint 2010.  SharePoint 2010 has been deployed a multitenant solution.  SharePoint and SSRS are on separate servers.  We have successfully integrated the two products but are experiencing some anomolies.  The SharePoint site we are deploying to uses a port number (e.g. http://mysharepointsvr:2222).  When you launch Report Builder from this site, it does not open connected to a Report Server.  When you try to connect to a Report Server the obvious choice is to put in http://mysharepointsvr:2222 for the Report Server service.  However, this does not work.  We are getting the following error: Connection Failed.  Unable to connect to the server that is specified in the URL, 'http://mysharepointsvr:2222'.  Make sure the server is running, the URL is correct, and you have permission to use the server. However, if we use the SharePoint address without the port number it will connect.  This does not work as the SharePoint port determines which site we are directed to for resources.  In our case, we need to be able to browse the folders on port 2222 not port 80 (default).  As far as the error above is concerned, we are able to browse to the report server (http://sql101/reportserver) and see all of the SharePoint sites.  In all cases, identical credentials are being u

Sharepoint site by something other than computer name: port number

I am quite new to sharepoint and like what I see so far, but I am having major problems getting a site by a domain other than http://computername:portnumberto work for me.

For example.  Lets say my computer name is sharepoint server and I want to create a web application and collection by the name of mysite.mysite.com.  The mysite.mysite.com site creates fine and shows up in IIS fine.  I create a host file entry for mysite.mysite.com and point it to my server.  When I try and browse to the site http://mysite.mysite.com I get challenged for authentication.  If I ping the site it is pinging the correct server. I put in the correct username and password, but I am unable to login.  If I create a site that is just the computer name and a random port number I am able to log in.

I figure I am missing something simple, but I have tried to research this for several hours and have gotten no where. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I would also like to add that I would like to make serveral sites that are running over port 80 by using host headers...if that changes anything.

Sharepoint IIS Default WebSite ASP.NET impersonation

Curious why ASP.NET impersonation is enabled by default.  Is it because sharepoint needs this enabled?  I would like to disable so that I can use Windows Authentication for custom web parts to access a remote sql server, this way I can use the domain user i set for the app pool.  Or is there a recommended way?

  • creating different sub page design template in sharepoint website

I know very little about sharepoint and have outsourced the design of a master page and sub page design for a new website using sharepoint. i received a site master file with all of the necessary images and the home page works just fine. However the file i received for the sub page design template was an ASPX file with the following instructions:

Here I enclosed the inner page layout file. You upload this file by using following instructions. you can change & edit the blue menu section in the master page itself. If I change into modifiable section you need to add the menu in each and every page, otherwise it will show as empty block. Please let me know your comments.

SharePoint and "Help Desk" template confusion

Okay; so I've read the three posts I found on this forum about the SharePoint Services "Help Desk" administrative template. I've scoured the internet for nuggets of wisdom; all-in-all, I've come to the conclusion that there is hardly ANY documentation for this template! :) So please excuse me if this question is considerd "noobish-ish" by some--I just a looking for a fresh set of brain cells to bounce my question off of. The template, itself, seems pretty bare bones and to the point, as far as ticketing issues. But how in the site settings do I specify a Service Request, when a domain user clicks on the "Create a Service Request " link, to go to a specific help desk email account on our Active Directory network? I see "Create a Service Request," "Service request List," "Service Request Task List;" it's getting a little confusing, as I don't use the "portal" end of SP, as much as I administrate our server. Where should I start, one and all?? ANY help will be greatly appreciated; thank you!

Hi I have created an asp.net website with SQL Server based form authentication and authorization. Now, we are moving this pure asp.net website to Sharepoint 2010 website. I have developed 5 webparts for my asp.net website to migrate to Sharepoint. All these webparts are avilable for access in the same page. How to setup port forwarding for SharePoint server on home network

I have a SharePoint 2010 server running on my home network.  I want to be able to access the server from the internet and edit pages, create sites etc.  The web applications is running on a specific port (1234) not port 80. I've configured my router to forward port 1234 to the server's IP address and I can access the site fine from the internet using the routers IP address and adding the port number.  Viewing the site works fine but the problem is when I try to access a page in the _layouts folder for any of the sub sites I get a "File not found" error.  Also, if I go to a sub site and create a new site (no _layouts page required) it works but the new site is created directly under the root and not the sub site. It seems that the port forwarding from the router is messing up the context for the _layouts folder.  Is there any way around this? Thanks.

Problem Saving Files to A Sharepoint 2010 Site from Office 2010: Saves locally by default rather tha

Hi we are starting to use sharepoint 2010 / word 2010 and have found an interesting bug/problem. Sometimes when a user tries to save a file (by clicking on the save button in the quick access toolbar for word 2010) the save dialog comes up with the users local "Documents" folder as the path (not the correct sharepoint path where the document should be saved).  (I should say that we are creating the file from sharepoint by using a toolbar on the document library, with the new button)  We are using a content type and a template attached to the document library when we create the file.  This is really annoying because the user might not notice that the document is saving locally and not to sharepoint.  I have found a strange workaround which involves clicking the [File] tab on the ribbon in word 2010, then clicking "Save and Send" and then clicking the save button again.  At this point word 2010 seems to "remember" that it is trying to save document to sharepoint and shows the sharepoint document library. This is a real nuisance which could lead to documents being lost/misfiled if people don't realize that this is happening.  Can anyone help me? Thanks Kevin krd

How to increase the timeout for a SharePoint 2010 website

The default timeout for an Http Request in SharePoint Foundation 2010 is 120 seconds*.  Any Http Requests above this 120 seconds will be met with a "Request timed out" error as displayed in the SharePoint logs: Unexpected     System.Web.HttpException: Request timed out. Note: The SharePoint logs can be found at:     C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS To increase this timeout you will need to modify the web.config file for the SharePoint Website.  If you are using the default SharePoint configuration, then the web.config file will be found at: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80\web.config Open this file in Notepad and then scroll down to the system.web > httpRuntime element (about half way down the file).  To increase the timeout, add the executionTimeout attribute to the httpRuntime element with a value of the number of seconds for the timeout.  For example, to increase the timeout to 5 minutes, add an executionTimeout of 300 like this: <httpRuntime maxRequestLength="51200" executionTimeout="300" /> In the default SharePoint Foundation 2010 web.config file it will look like this: Save the web.config file and now the timeout for HttpRequests will have been increased (Of course you need to ask why a request is taking more than 2

Visual studio 2005 - Port Number is difference during run time.

Hi, When I debug(F5), the port number display in the URL is difference from the ASP.net development server. Eg: URL address port number is  - 1084, while for the Server is 1088 I have tried difference ways such as trying to set the dynamic port to false, so that I can configure my own port, but it is not able to work. I have also turned off the ESet Firewall however the port number is still difference.  Need your help in this area.. Thank you!

Best way to implement authentication and authorization for a sharepoint 2010 website.

Hi I come across different authentication methods in Sharepoint 2010. The sharepoint website we are develpoing as of now is Intranet. Later we are planning to move it to Internet(Public) site. What will be the best way to implement authentication and authorization for our website. If windows authentication(Classic mode authentication) is default for a sharepoint website (2010) , I have a few questions ragarding windows authentication. 1) In case of windows authentication, where should we maintain  users? 2) In case of windows authentication, how are the users created? 3) In case of windows authentication, how can I perform authorization.   If we want to use FBA(Form based authentication) in sharepoint 2010, I have a few questions ragarding FBA in sharepoint 2010. 1) In case of FBA(using Claim based authentication) , if we want to use custom database(where we are storing user details and  roles) rather than bulitin SQL membership  provider, how can we achieve this? Can anyone provide some useful resources to implement authentication(Windows or FBA or dual) and authorization for a sharepoint 2010 website with sample code? Please reply ASAP. Thanks & Regards Mahendra Babu
