Document Conversion of large files

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 27, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

My MOSS 2007 environment fires OutOfMemory exceptions when attempt to launch a custom Document Converter on files larger then 50 MB (Video files) . Because my Document Converter is implemented by a standalone executable, I'm figuring these exceptions are fired by Sharepoint Work process, on downloading/uploading from/to temp folder, not by my custom converter.

If this is the case, can I apply any workarounds on server configuration ? I tried with /3GB switch without luck. Maybe SP1 will address this issue too ?

Conversion of xlsx files uploaded to document library

I have a MS Sharepoint Server 2007 installed, and we are using a document library to store files of various types.  Some of our users use OpenOffice to read and save these documents.

When I upload a document that is an xlsx formatted document, microsoft seems to convert the file into a different format than the file that was uploaded - preventing Open Office from opening the file.  The file is still an xlsx file and Microsoft Excel is able to understand this format.  Is there a way to turn this behaviour off?

I've tried turning off the Document Conversions Launcher Service (as well as the Load Balancer)

I've also tried changing the settings for the document library -> 'Open in client application' and 'open as web page', neither of these seem to solve my problem.

How can I configure Sharepoint so that it doesn't convert my xlsx files?  Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

SharePoint document migration challenges when migrating files and folders

There are several challenges when migrating documents to Microsoft SharePoint. While these challenges can be overcome, they are a real pain if the migration source, content and file systems are not SharePoint friendly.

Large document libraries with a custom user interface

We recently migrated our document management system to SharePoint (WSS 3.0) and I adapted my VB6 client application to search for and retrieve a list of documents from this new SharePoint library using the Lists web service. Although the total number of documents in this library is 90,000 at one site and over 145,000 at another, my VB6 application never retrieves more than 600-700 documents at a time. From reading white papers such as "Working with Large Lists in Office SharePoint Server 2007" (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=95450&clcid=0x409), it appears that if my custom user interface limits the number of items returned in a search of these large lists, that it may not be necessary to put these documents into folders. However, our current scanning software, KnowledgeLake Capture, by default places newly scanned documents into folders based on the year, month, day and hour, which means that these documents are placed in nested folders 4 levels deep.

There are also some 20 metadata fields on these document libraries that allow us to filter these document libraries so that search results will in most cases be limited to a few hundred items.

We acquired new servers (Windows Server 2008 with SQL Server 2008) to host our SharePoint libraries and we are running WSS 3.0 S

How to manage large .trc files?

Hello everbody,        Sir, with raid 10  with enough arrays to hold files saperately.    Is an array of raid 10 will be identified as one logical drive? such as c:, d: e.t.c.   Actually I want to store trace files on server to capture representative workload for DB Tuning with DTA. As i know that will be very large in size as my OLTP DB gets very busy at 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and less busy at diff. time and i don't want any event to be missed out due to lack of resources. So how to manage this?   Can i attach ext. HD to the dedicated sql server to hold .trc files? Is it advisable?   Pl provide any available link for config. best practices for raid 10. Or standard config. for raid 10 to get optimum performance. Or any suggestion regarding this issue.   Thanks in advance

Storing large files (10gb) in MOSS.

Hello, We are planning to develop a portal with few lists in the portal. We have a requirement to store huge files of approximately 10GB in size. Can any one let me know If we can have a mechanism where in we can only save the file meta data to a MOSS list and save the actual file to a file share (Data Center)? I am looking forward to a generic service(WCF) which can perform this functionlity. If it is possible can some one provide a series of steps to achieve this. Thanks, kesari suresh

Moving files from one document library to another problem.

Hi, I have a strange problem with trying to move a number of files progammatically from one document library to another. I have a workflow running in sharepoint, which throughout the progress of the workflow, updates a word document stored in a document library, titled "CR".  Within the CR library there may also be a folder title "CR X" where x is the number of the document.  This folder contains any files which have been attached to the CR document.  I.E, excel files, pictures etc. When the workflow completes, the document should be moved to another document library called "Archived" which has a folder named after the year, i.e 2010, which inside that, contains a folder called the name of the document.  All the attached documents should also be moved to this folder. So for example, a document structure could be parentweb\parentsite\CR\CR 2.doc parentweb\parentsite\CR\CR 2\image.jpg parentweb\parentsite\CR\CR 2\image2.jpg Should, when the workflow completes end up looking like: parentweb\parentsite\Archived\2010\CR 2\CR 2.doc parentweb\parentsite\Archived\2010\CR 2\image.jpg parentweb\parentsite\Archived\2010\CR 2\image2.jpg. I have got the first part working fine, where the document is moved to the archive directory.  But I cannot move all the attachment files.  The loop I have to get the files and move them will wo

sharepoint 2010 document conversion job started but never completes

I trigger the conversion of a Word.docx file to convert to PDF but the Job never completes. It just says this under the status column but nothing under the outcome column. I have waited for 48 hours to be sure it just wasn't slow. "Conversion Job with Id=00000000-0000-1064-8041-acbca36dcb07 started" There is nothing in the event log nor in the Sharepoint Log that says there is a problem.

What is the best Hosting model when Uploading Large Files via WCF?

I am building a WCF service where besides regular CRUD operations, it porovides methods to upload large (upto 15MB each) files. The service will serve a number of "clients" that will send data to our back-end. Now, while some of the clients are ok with sending one file at time, others would like to be sending these files in batches (i.e. several files at a time).... My questions: What is the best option for hosting this service considering the environment (see below)?  Will IIS be able to support it or will it time out? I know you can increase timeout limit in config file but how will it handle a batch of large files at a time? Is windows service a better option here? What are the dis/advantages of IIS vs Win Srvc in this scenario?  Current Environment: Win 2003 Server w/IIS 6.0 and WCF (.NET 3.5) Thanks in advance!

Document library hiding pdf files' tool bar

Hi all, I have a requirement that the Sharepoint pdf documents should have the toolbar hidden in order to prohibit users from downloading and printing the file. The only way I can do this is to create a content editor web part, using HTML to open the pdf file and add '#toolbar=0' after the pdf file name. I am wondering if I can also add '#toolbar=0' to the Sharepoint document library's pdf files? Thanks!

how do I pass in a standard xml+xsl to be converted through the Sharepoint 2010 Document Conversion

How do I pass in a standard xml+xsl to be converted through the Sharepoint 2010 Document Conversion? Via the SDK I have been able to code a c# workflow that converts word files in a Sharepoint 2010 Document Library (docx, dox, word.xml) to PDF successfully but want to pass in an xml+xsl file to this engine if possible. Actually I have xml, xsl, and if needed xsl-fo files to deal with but would be happy if I could figure out how to make the Document Conversion engine do the xml+xsl transform and then send that to a doc file in Sharepoint.

Files in document libary not picking up the correct content types

Hi, I have a document libary where I have 10 InfoPath content types attached. For eg: Type1, Type2 etc... Type10. In this doc lib, I have a folder for each cutomer, and inside each of those folders, I have a file of each Content type (".xml"). I am creating these Folders and files programatically. The problem is that, the files are not picking up its content types. Every file (.xml), when uploaded, its content type is "Document" which is the default content type. Earlier it used to pickup the correct content types. What could be wrong?
