Parallel Debugging: Debugging Task-Based Parallel Applications in Visual Studio 2010

In Visual C++ 10 and the Microsoft .NET Framework 4, Microsoft is introducing new libraries and runtimes to significantly ease the process of expressing parallelism in your code base, together with new tool support for performance analysis and debugging of parallel applications. In this article, you will learn about debugging support in Visual Studio 2010, much of which is focused on task-based programming models.

Debugging Tips with Visual Studio 2010

This is the twenty-sixth in a series of blog posts I'm doing on the VS 2010 and .NET 4 release. Today's blog post covers some useful debugging tips that you can use with Visual Studio.  My friend Scott Cate (who has blogged dozens of great VS tips and tricks here ) recently highlighted these to me as good tips that most developers using Visual Studio don't seem to know about (even though most have been in the product for awhile).  Hopefully this post will help you discover them if you aren't already taking advantage of them.  They are all easy to learn, and can help save you a bunch of time. Run to Cursor (Ctrl + F10) Often I see people debugging applications by hitting a breakpoint early in their application, and then repeatedly...(read more)

Debugging clickonce deployed wpf apps

Hi,   I'm trying to debug an error which occurs on all client pc's but not on my dev pc. I have already added the following error handling to my app.xaml.cs: public partial class App : Application { void App_DispatcherUnhandledException(object sender, DispatcherUnhandledExceptionEventArgs e) { var stringBuilder = new StringBuilder(); stringBuilder.AppendFormat("{0}\n", e.Exception.Message); stringBuilder.AppendFormat( "Exception handled on main UI thread {0}.", e.Dispatcher.Thread.ManagedThreadId); // attempt to save data var result = MessageBox.Show( "Application must exit:\n\n" + stringBuilder.ToString() + "\n\nSave before exit?", "app", MessageBoxButton.YesNo, MessageBoxImage.Error); if (result == MessageBoxResult.Yes) { MessageBox.Show(e.Exception.InnerException.ToString()); MessageBox.Show(e.Exception.InnerException.Message.ToString()); } // Return exit code this.Shutdown(-1); // Prevent default unhandled exception processing e.Handled = true; } private void Application_Startup(object sender, StartupEventArgs e) { AppDomain.CurrentDomain.UnhandledException += new UnhandledExceptionEventHandler(CurrentDomain_UnhandledException); } void CurrentDomain_UnhandledException(object sender, UnhandledExceptionEventArgs e) { Exception ex = e.ExceptionObject as Exception; MessageBox.S

Do you need to license Office Web Apps seperate from sharepoint server 2010 enterprise license?

Hi All, I been reading this article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff431687.aspx#bkmk_ins_exis_farm  and have come to the conculsion that if you want word viewing services and power point services you need to license and download office web apps separate from the SharePoint Licensing/download. Can anyone confirm this that may know more about the subject? I thought those services would come along with enterprise but from what I’m reading I guess not.   Regards, Jeff

Debugging SQLCLR in VS 2010 using attach to process

After reading numerous posts / threads, I still can't get an answer. We have assemblies built in Visual Studio 2008 (.NET 2.0) and could debug them without any issues (on the same server). Since we upgraded to Visual Studio 2010, the "attach to process" does not work and the breakpoints don't get hit.

I've followed numerous workarounds, such as making sure the correct debugger is used by adding a config file to sqlservr.exe, but this did not make a difference.. Articles can be found here: http://webstats.interknack.com/BLOGS/BOBB/post/SQLCLR-debugging-and-VS-2010-revisited.aspx and http://blogs.msdn.com/b/robertbruckner/archive/2010/06/20/debugging-custom-extensions-with-visual-studio-2010.aspx.

Here an example of my sqlservr.exe.config file:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
   <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true">

Pin features while debugging in Visual Studio 2010.

Visual Studio 2010 is one of most awesome tool to debug Microsoft.NET related code. I have found one more interesting feature with the Visual studio 2010. That is called Pin Data Tip feature. This features can be very useful when you are debugging the code with loops. Normally when you debug with the code if you want to know the value of variable then you have to put your cursor on that variable and tool tip will show the values of that variable. The pin feature will pin that tool tip and you don't have to put mouse over there. Let's take a simple example to examine that feature. Below is the code for that. I have created a simple for loop and I am printing variable value with Response.Write on asp.net page. Below is the code for that.

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Web;
using System.Web.UI;
using System.Web.UI.WebControls;

namespace Blogging
    public partial class _Default : System.Web.UI.Page
        protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
            for (int i = 1; i <= 20; i++)

Now let's put the break point on for loop like following and then start debugging via pressing F5.

Office Web Apps 2010 for SharePoint Foundation will not View Word or PowerPoint File

I have installed a SharePoint Foundation 2010 in a Farm environment and installed Office Web Apps 2010. I have not been able to view Word documents or PowerPoint documents inside of the web browser. I can view Excel documents okay and I can edit a Word doc in the browser.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be the problem?

Multi-tenancy integration with Office Web Apps and SharePoint 2010 - Possible Solution?

Hi All, I've been scratching my head trying to figure out how to integrate Office Web Apps in to SharePoint 2010 as a hoster.  The issue was after following various posts, documents and so on, I could enable the Office Web Apps on the main site collection but not our organisation as a test tenant.  We are running SharePoint 2010 feature pack.

When attempting to add the office feature pack, we would run in to a problem:

Enable-SPFeature : Failed to activate feature 'MobileExcelWebAccess' (id: 'e995e28b-9ba8-4668-9933-cf5c146d7a9f').  To figure out if this was just an issue with the Enterprise Feature MobileExcelWebAccess, I decided to enable the feature for standard temporarily and discovered a range of services that needed to be added to the feature pack.

So after much thinking about this, we felt that Office Web Apps should be available as a separate feature pack for Foundation, Standard or Enterprise rather than adding to the existing feature packs and migrate the customer, so long as the customer has the correct SPLA or Volume License.

Based on this, we created 3 new feature packs that supported Office Web Apps.  For those who have grappled with this same concept, here are the feature ID's you need to add to t
