Strongly Typed Dataset and Gridview: Problem

Posted By:      Posted Date: November 01, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I am trying to populate a gridview using two tables. I also have a strongly typed dataset and used the method on this page:

http://www.asp.net/data-access/tutorials/creating-a-data-access-layer-vb

the problem is that, when i try to use two table the gridview does show up (I checked through debugging that the datatable comes back as empty).

I will be grateful for ur assistance or thoughts. Thank you

Strongly Typed DataSet Cleanup

Hey all, I've looked around and I can't seem to find a good answer on this. Is there any cleanup needed on a strongly typed dataSet? I'm using DataSets as my DAL but I don't really have a BLL. I'm handling this in my code behind like this: Private PunchAdapter As New PunchDSTableAdapters.PUNCHIMPORTTableAdapter Dim LastPunch As String = PunchAdapter.GetLastPunch(PersonNUM) PunchAdapter.InsertPunch(PunchID, ReqCode, PersonNUM, txtDate.Text, txtTime.Text) I'm assuming it handles the opening and closing of the connetion? The adapter has a dispose method. Should I be using this? Is there any cleanup necessary or does the partial class (that inherits system.data.dataset) handle all of this? Thanks!

How to use connection string and strongly-typed dataset which exists in another project ?

Hi

i have a winform application with huge strongly-typed dataSet. Now, i've decided to create a web edition of my application and i want to use strongly-typed typed dataSet which exists in my winform application. also it's tableAdapters create with the connection string settings which stored in my winforms app.config.

my problem is that how to use strongly-typed dataset of my winform app with new connection string which exists in my web app ?

thanks in advance

Problem with SCOPE_IDENTITY in strongly typed datasets

Hi,

I am developing an ASP.NET site and I am using strongly typed datasets and I am generating them automatically in Visual Studio 2008. I have been using TransactionScope to be able to use several table adapters from different datasets and update them in one transaction. When I create a new row, I use the update method in the table adapter to create new posts. The update method takes a dataset, datatable or a row as argument making them very easy to work with. After I have updated a row, I have generated a ExecuteScalarGetIdValue() call to get the latest inserted ID value. I use "SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY" and it gives me an exception. When I try the query builder this SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY is returning NULL. When I ask it in SQL Management Studio SQL Query window it returns a correct value. How can I get the correct value from the table adapter?
      {

      ...
        this._tableAdapter.Update(dataTable);

        id = this._event.ExecuteScalarGetIdValue();

       ...

        scope.Complete();
      }

      return true;
    }

Strongly typed dataset exception handling

Hey everyone,

I'm currently working on a 3-tier ASP.NET application (UI, BLL & DAL). The DAL uses a strongly typed dataset that I've created with the VS Dataset Wizard. My question is, what is the best way to handle exceptions originating from the BLL and DAL classes. I googled a bit and it seems that the most commonly used practice is to create DALException and BLLException classes and throw your own message. Is this the way forward? Could you please indicate how this can be done for an automatically generated DAL? What are the best practices? Examples with code are highly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Clayton

Strongly Typed Dataset

I have tables like CustomerDetails which have few fields like CustomerID, ContactName,Address,Phone,Email

and few other tables which may have primary and foreign key fields say Tables Orders which may contain fields like OrderID (PK), CustomerID (FK), ItemName,Quantity, Price, Total etc which may carry orders from customers and one customer have several orders at a time.

I need to create a strongly typed dataset and insert data into database.

Please help me out as I dont know strongly Typed Dataset

Problem to group radio button across gridview rows

In general no one can easily group or make a single selection from radio button list inside gridview rows. There are a lot of way to make a single or unique selection from list. Here i want to share how i can address this problem in the most easiest way. Googling the problem most of the cases i saw the grouping in horizontal way. Thats why i tried to group the radio buttons in vertical manner. Let i have a requirement like below:

Create and Use a Typed DataSet by Using Visual C# .NET

This article shows you how to create and use a typed DataSet in a small Web application. Typed DataSets, which inherit from the DataSet class, create first-class members of a DataSet's DataTables and DataColumns, yielding the many benefits that come with the use of strong typing.

Gridview Enable Selection Problem

Hi,

I have a gridview with Enable selection and Enable Paging equals to TRUE.

I also set the PageSize of my gridview to 4 so that I only displays 4 rows per page.

The problem is when I click the pager in the bottom of my gridview, my gridview is disappearing and no records appear.

Here is code behind of my gridview:

If e.Row.RowType = DataControlRowType.DataRow Then
                e.Row.Attributes("style") = "cursor:pointer"

                e.Row.Cells(2).Attributes.Add("onclick", Page.ClientScript.GetPostBackEventReference(sender, "Select$" & e.Row.RowIndex.ToString))
                e.Row.Cells(3).Attributes.Add("onclick", Page.ClientScript.GetPostBackEventReference(sender, "Select$" & e.Row.RowIndex.ToString))
                e.Row.Cells(4).Attributes.Add("onclick", Page.ClientScript.GetPostBackEventReference(sender, "Select$" & e.Row.RowIndex.ToString))
                e.Row.Cells(5).Attributes.Add("onclick", Page.ClientScript.GetPostBackEventReference(sender, "Select$" & e.Row.RowIndex.ToString))
                e.Row.Cells(6).Attributes.Add("onclick", Page.ClientScript.GetPostBackEventReference(sender, "Select$" & e.Row.RowIndex.ToString))

problem...i want a list item to populate all data in gridview!!!

I have tried using list item selected value=0 but to no avail.

what is the easiest way to achieve this?

problem filling dataset

Hey guys,

Am using a dataset to get different data from a table depending on options selected. Sometimes this means the database returns no matching rows. However with this particular case it seems if there are no rows to put into the dataset I get an "Arithmetic overflow error converting nvarchar to data type numeric." error.

Code looks like this :

Dim saleSelect As String = "SELECT * FROM [sales] WHERE ([affected] LIKE '%' + @affected + '%') AND ([minVal] < @price) AND ([active] = @active)"
Dim saleCmd As SqlDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdapter(saleSelect, sqlConn)
saleCmd.SelectCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue("@affected", "," & id & ":")
saleCmd.SelectCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue("@price", price)
saleCmd.SelectCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue("@active", "True")
Dim saleDs As DataSet = New DataSet()

saleCmd.Fill(saleDs, "saleTbl") 'Error occurs here

The error occurs when SqlDataAdapter attemps to fill the Dataset.

All fields in the table are nvarchar except ofr [id] which is 'int' and [active] which is 'bit'

Any ideas?

Excel-like experience - gridview focus problem

Hi.

I'm creating a page where people can order several items from a list without having to press "edit" and "save" in between like you normally would in a gridview. The user writes down the quantity, and finally presses a "submit" button that saves the order.

I want the user to have a windows form (or excel) like eperience, so once the user puts in the quantity and moves on to the next item, either by TAB or by clicking on the TextBox, i make some calculations without the user beeing bothered with a full refresh or having to press a buton to execute the event, so I place the controls inside an UpdatePanel and use TextBox.TextChanged. The event runs code that calculates the sum for the row (price * quantity) and shows that in a column called "Sum", and updates a label in a fixed position with the new order total ("Total").

Any ideas on how to achieve this?

Right now I use a GridView with a templatefield for the Quantity and set the TextBox.TextChanged event to fire to make the calculations. The problem is that the focus then changes.

By using SmartNavigation or the ScriptManager.SetFocus I manage to retain focus on the TextBox that executed the Postback, but the user might have moved on to a textbox far down the gridview (thus causing the postback by leaving the previo

GridView Problem

I've been asked to change an ASP.NET project to MVP Architecture - which may have something to do with what is going wrong.

I make the call through the architecture to the database which returns a dataset which I've verified is correct, (using dataset.writeXML() ) just before databinding  to the gridview.

On one page everything works as expected (plus any post backs). Another page the Page_Load works correct and the gridview is populated, but any postbacks do not work- it retains the Page_Load's data. Then on the third page the GridView never shows though databinded. In all these cases I've checked that the Dataset is good data, and made sure to DataBind().

All three use the exact same logic. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreicated.

Thank you for your help.
