SQLServer Express 2008 R2 - Cannot connect Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11.

I have just installed  running MSSQL Server 2008 R2 (Express), along with Visual Web Developer 2010 Express In SQL Server Configuration Manager I can see the SQL Server Service running (SQLEXPRESS) and the SQL Server Browser service running. On running SQL Server Management Studio when trying to log on I get the message Login failed for user Phil-PC`Phil (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456) In the SQL Server Error log I see this error 2010-09-16 10:24:16.07 Logon       Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2010-09-16 10:24:16.07 Logon       Login failed for user 'Phil-PC\Phil'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] I have been unable to find anything useful on Google on how to resolve this problem. I have tried running the command line utility sqlcmd -L and this lists the following Servers:     Phil-PC     Phil-PC\SQLEXPRESS   In my list of Installed programs in Control Panel I see both MS SQL Server 2008 & MS SQL Server 2008 R2, is that correct?

Upgraded SQLServer 2008 Enterprise Evaluation after 180 day period expired...Services start but stil

I have a SQLServer 2008 Enterprise (180 day eval) installation that had expired.

I downloaded and intalled SQLServer 2008 Enterprise (Full version) from Technet

and ran the "Version Upgrade" tool.

The Upgrade tool correctly identified the expired instance and reported that it

had successfully upgraded the expired instance.

The OS processes will start but when I attempt a connect, I get a "Evaluation Period Expired"

error message.

Is it possible to do an "upgrade in place" after the 180 day evaluation has expired or do

you have to uninstall then re-install ?

Many Thanks in Advance,

SQL 2008 eval expired, ran maintenance Edition upgrade but still can't start services

We unknowingly installed a MSDN evaluation copy of SQL 2008 on a production server.  The evaluation period expired and we're no longer able to access the database.  We have purchased SQL 2008 and have run the Maintenence Edition Upgrade, it completed successfully but the SQL services will not start, event logs for the various SQL services reference 'evaluation period has expired'.  We have modified the CommonFiles DWORD value to 3 in the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\ConfiguratioState key as noted in other posts and tried rerunning the the upgrade. We've also tried running the install on just the shared tools as referenced on another post, the install ran successfully but still not allowing the SQL services to start.

We don't want to lose our database if at all possible.  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

SqlServer 2008 Express Install error

Guys, any one know how to fix this ?

I installed the SqlServer Express 2008 on top of WinXp sp2 with .net framework and sdk 3.5

Now when I try to start the sqlexpress service it does not start and event log has following exception..

FileMgr:Tongue TiedtartLogFiles: Operating system error 2(The system cannot find the file specified.) occurred while creating or opening file 'e:\sql10_main_t\sql\mkmastr\databases\objfre\i386\modellog.ldf'. Diagnose and correct the operating system error, and retry the operation.

Now on my system I have only c:\ drive no e:\

Does any one know how to fix this ?
Is there a way to create this master database somehow using command line?

I really don't want to uninstall/install ?

How do I upgrade and overlay SQL Server 2005 Express with SQL Server 2008 R2

We are upgrading SQL server2005 Express to SQL Server 2008 R2.  We want to replace 2005 Express with 2008 R2 on existing system.  We have lots of questions about how to perform the upgrade safely and pull in our existing databases.  The existing database files are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1.  Also, we'll want to use the existing instance name to avoid having to reconfigure all of the installed clients at our user's workstations.

Should we uninstall the 2005 Express version first?  Will that keep the existing databases on the system?

Or can we install 2008 R2 while the databases are live under the 2005 Express, or should we shut down 2005 Express first?

Will  2008 R2 use the same data folder or create a new one?  If it uses the same folder will it automatically recognize our existing databases?  If it creates a new one, I suppose we can use the migration Wizard.

Thanks for any help....

What is the proper way to set permissions in sqlserver 2008 (express)?

I have a database that is accessed by an application for data updates.

I want to use windows authentication with a domain group

I have created a login with the domain group then created a user in the appropriate database with that login

I have created a database role with select, update, delete, insert rights on the appropriate tables.

The application works fine with a separate user that has a login and user with the required permissions but when a member of the domain group runs the app they can connect to sqlserver but do not have access to the tables.

In Oracle I would create the role, add table permissions to the role and assign the role to the user,

I can't figure out how to accomplish the same thing in sqlserver 2008

Upgrade expired SQL 2008 eval to SQL 2008 R2 retail

I'm new to SQL so the question may be dumb.

I have a test lab that consist of 1 SQL Server 2008 SP2 CU7 downloaded from MSDN subscription. As this SQL server wasn't used quite frequently and it become expired about few days ago. Now I have reatil (again from MSDN subscription) SQL Server 2008 R2 Std. As the current SQL server is expired I cannot perform update from 2008 to 2008 R2.

By using this regtrick: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971268 I can upgrade shared tools only, but not SQL Server engine.

Is there a way to upgrade expired SQL 2008 to a 2008R2? Thanks in advance!

How to Upgrade SQL Server Express 2008 SP1 to SP2

I have downloaded SQL Server Express 2008 SP2 installation and want to upgrade an existing SQL Server Express 2008 SP1 to SP2.

However I cannot seem to find out to do this. I have tried using the /ACTION=UPGRADE, at some point in the installation there comes a choice of which SQL instance to upgrade but the SQL Server Express (SP1) does not show up in the list.

Does anyone know how to run this upgrade to get SP1 to SP2?

Note this is being run and Windows XP SP3.

Thanks in advance for any help.

SQLSERVER Express 2008 R2 unattended install issue

My question is as follows:

I need to instal SQL Server Express 2008 R2 in command prompt mode (unattended).

I was able to create a configuration file and i've tested this instal and it does work, installing the correct instance and everything.

However, in about 30 to 40 percent of the computers that i run this install, the unattended installation goes through it's motions and finishes, but when i go check the installed programs the only thing installed is the SQL SERVER Installation Center <month> CTP. Nothing else is installed like the Configuration manager or the required instance. Has anybody else seen this? I'm trying to isolate the condition that creates this. It only happens on a percentage of the computers.

I'm offering below the contents of my Configuration file.

;SQLSERVER2008 Configuration File

; Specify the Instance ID for the SQL Server features you have specified. SQL Server directory structure, registry structure, and service names will reflect the instance ID of the SQL Server instance.

; Specifies a Setup work flow, like INSTALL, UNINSTALL, or UPGRADE. This is a required parameter.

When installing & configuring MOSS 2007 the default settings were choosen. So now when we try to access the SSMS I get a message "The evaluation period has expired. Please buy the product at the following url.". I do have a product key for SQL Server 2008 standard but when I am trying to perform a edition upgrade it doesn't detect the SQL Server Instance "OFFICESERVERS" so I am unable to upgrade the server. Because of the limitation in size we are unable to create new doc libraries or pages on the SP site.

Here are the details of the environment:

OS : Windows Server 2008 Standard SP1 64-bit

MOSS 2007 version :, Current License : Office SharePoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License

Database : SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 32-bit
