User Profile properties -- changes in Manage User Profiles

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I have a user profile perperty which is mapped to an AD field and mapping is import only. And this is field is not editable by regular user. But I know as a system admin, one can go to Manage user profiles to change the value of this field

Now my question is if this mapped field is changed under "Manage User Profile" by a system admin, after a full sync, will the value from AD overwrite it? I thought it would, but I don't see this happens.

Please help. Thanks in advance.

Crawler fails to register date properties of user profiles with the month of January, April, August

This seems to be a bug when the crawler search the user profiles in MOSS 2007.  When crawled, user profiles with a SPS-HireDate in the months of January, April, August and December will be detected, but a full-text (SQL) search returns those profiles without the HireDate field.

User profiles with HireDates in other months work correctly, returning the HireDate in the search.  And changing the month of a problematic user profile also fixes the problem.

This problem is also reflected in the fact that while we have 499 user profiles using the SPS-HireDate property,  the managed property page from the search section only has 350 items with the HireDate property.

We're running MOSS 2007 32bit with SP2 with an English language base and the Spanish language pack. I'd considered date format problems, but I can't imagine how some months would work, while others wouldn't.

Any ideas?

SharePoint 2010 Server: Cannot manage all user profiles from upgraded MOSS SSP database

I have upgraded an SSP database to SharePoint 2010 and successfully performed User Profile Synchronization with Active Directory, however I cannot manage ALL of the user profiles in the database. I go to "Manage User Profiles" in Central Administration and perform a filtered search (i.e. I want all DOMAIN accounts beginning with "j" so I search for "DOMAIN\j" in Manage User Profiles), but I don't receive ALL the user profiles back. I receive about 8 in return when I know there are about 20 starting with "j". If I create a new AD account beginning with "j" it is successfully synched with SharePoint 2010 and I see it in the Manage User Profiles. I ran an stsadm -o sync to clear any old synchronization information, and the Forefront Synchronization Service appeared to pull in many changes to existing accounts (including ones I can't currently manage), but I still cannot manage them using "Manage User Profiles". I really need to be able to manage all the profiles so I can manually edit some fields. Can anyone please help? Thanks in advance.

Manage User Profile -- cannot change order

Hi, Is there any reason why I can't change the order of some of the properties in Manage User Profile. E.g  "about me " and "account name". I clicked the move down error, but it doesn't move Please advice, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Manage user profiles: How do I list all profiles?

I'd need to verify synchronization connection success and such. Currently the UPS lists that I have 9 profiles, but I'm having trouble getting them all to list at once. Is there some magic way to list all of them in 'Manage user profiles'? Alternatively, can there be a reason for why I can't view the profiles in 'Manage user profiles'?

Searching User Profile Properties

Hi all,

After a week of pulling my hair our and not reply's to my original posts. I’m giving it another crack to hopefully get some information to solve my problem.

Ill recap on what I'm trying to achieve.

Our HR department has a requirement that MySites must have a property for "Fire Warden", "First Aider" & "OHS Member".

I have successfully added these properties to MySite and they come up for every user and save state (as they are Boolean... checked or unchecked) no problem here what so ever.

Remove some of the properties in User profile

In "Edit My profile" under my profile, there is a section called "Activities I am following:" under Newsfeed Settings, I want to remove either this section or some items in that activities list. But for some reason, "Activities I am following:"  is not found in the properties list, how I can remove it? Please advice.

Thanks in advance.

User Profile Properties

I am specifiying which user profile properties are to be displayed.

About five properties show at the top above 'More Information'.   There are descriptions for these  but these are not displayed, just the  value of the propetries.  How do I 1)  get the descriptions to show   2) determine which properties show here.

Privacy categories user profile properties

I would like to delete some privacy categories, used to display the user profile properties.

Default options are : only me, my manager, my team, my colleagues and everyone.
I only wish to display "only me" and "everyone".

How can I accomplish this?

Error messages on OOB properties in User Profile

Receiving error messages on OOB properties in User Profile thus unable to edit fields:

i.e. Skills field

Error Message: There was a problem retrieving data for this field. Updating values in this field is disabled temporarily. You can still update values in other fields.

The user profile service is started and we have provisioned a Metadata Service Application and associate it with the same web application we are using for the User Profile Application. We have also associated our MySites web application with the User Profile Service.

How do we create new User Profile Synchronization connection so that we can import profiles from AD

We have a requirement to authenticate users against Active Directory LDS in our SP 2010 farm and also import their profiles in user profile store. We are able to setup FBA using AD membership provider to authenticate against AD LDS.

I am interested in importing the users in AD LDS to SharePoint user profile store.

When I try to create a new connection the options that I am provided are
1. Active Directory
2. Active Directory Logon Data
3. Active Directory Resource.
4.SunOne (LDAP) 5.2
5.Novell eDirectory (LDAP) 8.7.3
6.IBM Tivoli (LDAP) 6.2

If I select any of the options 1/2/3 I am asked to provide Forest Name and Domain Controller name. Since this is AD LDS there is no Forest or Domain Controller. It’s just a generic LDAP server.

So the question I am struggling with is: what are the steps required to create a User Profile Synchronization connection to import users from AD LDS and not from AD DS?

We are not able to find any information how to do that in SP2010… From other blog entries I am assuming it was supported and documented for MOSS2007.

There is NO “LDAP Directory” connection type in SP2010.

I am wondering if this is supported in SP2010.

User Profile Sync with AD - very odd behaviour, some profiles not working

1 x SP WFE, 1 x Dedicated SQL backend

So this has been driving me mad now for over a week....

SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise trying to sync 3000 users from Active Directory. Everything appears to be setup fine;

- Replicate directory changes granted
- Netbios fix applied with powershell
- SharePoint Sync Service running
- FIM services running (although one does occasionaly stop)
- August Cumulative Update applied

I have created the Service Application and the Connection to AD - choosing the OU's I want to sync.

3000+ user profiles appear to sync correctly, from Central Admin browsing through the users ALL of their profile information is complete and ready to go. No errors in MIISClient.exe or on the server anywhere.

The problem occurs from the front end when we try to add user to SharePoint groups. Seemingly by random one morning a large proportion of the user profiles when you browse for them through the SharePoint interface appear only as DOMAIN\USERNAME with no other profile information available.

If you login with one of these users (having granted them direct access) their login name top right is DOMAIN\USERNAME and in My Settings the profile information is BLANK.

After the user has logged in, 20 minutes later or so their profile information is suddenly avai

User Profile properties

I have a few user properties shown in the profile properties section of the user's profile page (under More Information), those information is in fact link that leads to a search. Is there a way to add those properties to the search scope automatically? As clicking on some of them return nothing (as the fields are not configured for search), or is there a way to remove the link and show text only?

Thanks in advance.

Need Clarifications on SharePoint 2010 User Profile properties and Sync database security

Need few clarifications on SharePoint 2010 user profile sync. I’ve answered some of them but need confirmation/clarity on this front.

  1. Is there option to disable ‘email address’ import from AD?
    Yes. Can disable that property mapping.
  2. Possible to send mails (user alerts) from SharePoint without the user profile property ‘email address’ mapped?
    Yes. User alert mails from SharePoint will work without ‘email address’ mapped in user profile DB.
  3. In case email address too is imported into SharePoint, can we bulk export them from SharePoint? If Yes, how to security harden that database?
    Not Sure. I believe Farm admin account/sync account has access to do this profile DB.

 Thanks in advance for your advice.<

Programmatically adding user profile properties fails when adding a multivalued property

I have written a console application that adds a custom section to the User Profile Properties and then adds properties under that section. The code works fine when adding CoreProperties of type string (Single Value) and mapping each property to an Active Directory field. However the code always fails when mapping a string (Multi Value) property to an AD property. I have researched the errors I present below but cannot see what the solution might be.

    private static void AddCustomProperties(string strUrl)
      Console.WriteLine("Adding custom properties under section '" + DisplayName + "'.......");
      using (SPSite siteColl = new SPSite(strUrl))

        SPServiceContext serviceContext = SPServiceContext.GetContext(siteColl);
        UserProfileConfigManager upcm = new UserProfileConfigManager(serviceContext);
        CorePropertyManager cpm = upcm.ProfilePropertyManager.GetCoreProperties();
        ProfilePropertyManager ppm = up

Manage user Properties - Changed property "work phone" Property mapping for Synchronization but user

Hi, I've changed the a user profile settings in CA (see below) so it is no longer mapped to AD, but when I edit the user profile in SharePoint MySite I have a yellow triangle with an exclaimation mark that states "indicated a filed that is updated automatically from the corporate directory. Changes to these properties may be lost. But I have removed the mapping as above. Am I missing some thing or is there a job that I need to run to carry the update through.

I made the change in  - "user profile service application - manage user properties - Work phone" I have removed the "property mapping for Synchronization" so it now displays "There are no items to show in this view" - Do I need to make further changes to carry this through?
