Documents opening blank when not on the Domain

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Enterprise SP 2010 installed, with all users on Office 2010.  While on the domain in the network there is not a problem.  Documents open as they are directed by the library in the client or browser.

When I log in from another source outside the network it routes through an ISA box.  After authenticating on the site we can see all of the content just fine.  Here's our delima:  Go to any document library and click on a file.  The client application will open, but just remains blank.  If you click on the arrow and select Edit in Excel or Word, same result.  The only option is to hit the arrow and choose Send>Download a copy.  It has only happened to a few of the several hundred that use SharePoint.  I cannot find a setting or problem on the machine itself.  The last result is to reimage the machines, but we have started to see this happen to a new person each day.  This does not account for those who may be having the issue and never report it.

All office services are running, the sites are loaded in the Trusted Sites in IE.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?

Issues opening documents

Have a bit of a weird one where people are getting different behaviour when opening the same documents from our intranet hosted on Sharepoint 2007 server. What's happening is that some people are clicking on a document link and if they already have the associated application open (word, excel, etc) then the newly opened document is not opened full screen, and are instead opened on the taskbar as a flashing icon. As these documents are being used for inductions for people with very low computer literacy it is causing quite a few issues as the majority of people are not aware they just need to click on the flashing icon in the taskbar to bring focus to the office document they are wanting to read. So far I think I've narrow this behaviour down to the following conditions; 1. Only occurs when clicking links to documents located on an external training vendors website which references our intranet based links. 2. Only occurs when associated office app is already open. 3. Only occurs for some people, so would appear to be profile based. Other people logged on to the same PC don't get this behaviour.   Any suggestions woud be great!  All workstations have Office 2003 and IE8 on XP as standard, so I'm a bit stumped as to what is causing these differences. Because this seems to be client based I'm wo

WSS2.0 opening pdf documents an error message appears: The document could not be saved. The file may

Hi All,. In a WSS2.0 document library, a user is trying to open pdf files. However, an error message is displayed: 'The document could not be saved. The file may be read only, or another user may have it open. Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder'. No one else has the file open. When the user saves the file using Save As (as it is apparently Read Only) and then saves the file back to the SharePoint site, all previous versions of the file disappear. The user has noted that this has been happening since today, and she had some other network issues that have been resolved. No other users are experiencing this problem.  Not sure if this problem is related to the network problems the user was facing. I've had the user reboot but this has not resolved it. Any ideas?

Problem about opening Office documents in SPS2003

Hi, I have a problem about opening Office documents in SPS2003. The situation is as follows: I use the same NB in building A and building B. In building A everything is fine but in building B when I open Office documents(word, excel..) in my SPS2003 portal something happened. If documents don't need authorization these documents are opened quickly but documents that need authorization when I typed id and password documents are opened very slowly(about 5-10 minutes). So what is the reasom about this problem. Any suggestion? Thanks.

Office 2007 Documents Open in Read-Only when Opening them from a WSS 2.0 Document Library

Hi, When any of our Windows 7 Pro computers that run Office 2007 Pro attempt to open a Word document that resides in a WSS 2.0 document library by using the drop down menu and selecting "Edit with MS Word", the documents open in read-only.  Our work-around is to save the document locally, modify it, and then save it back to the document library. We have some Windows XP and Vista systems that run Office 2007 and they are fine and can simply edit the document and save it.  We also have a handful of pc's that run Office 2003 and they are not having any issues either. Things I've tried: Office 2007 Repair - no luck Office Reinstall - no luck Some registry mod HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12\Internet\OpenDocumentReadWrite=1 (noted on a MSKB article) - no luck and after re-reading the article it clearly states that this will not address content hosted on WSS or SPS sites Clearing IE temp files, resttting IE to defaults - no luck Once again, this only seems to happen to Win7Pro pc's that run Office 2007.  Honestly, I can't tell if IE8 has anything to do with this. Any thoughts or help would be extrememly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Login prompt appearing when opening Office documents

Each time I open an Office document in a SharePoint library, I have to re-enter my credentials.

I am using MOSS 2007, Windows XP and IE 7.

I've checked the 'remember my password' option when being prompted for my credentials.

The strangest thing is even that when I press Cancel on the pop-up window asking for my credentials, the document is still opened...

I found already some posts around this matter and tried already following suggestions:

* I added my site to the trusted sites

* I checked that 'basic authentication' is unchecked under Central Administration -> Application Management -> Authentication Providers

* I've added my credentials for the server hosting the SharePoint environment in the managed passwords for my user account in the control panel (though I am not 100% sure of having this done correctly. It is asking upon entering an extra credential for a server name. I entered here the same name as the one appearing on top of the pop-up window asking for credentials, after 'connect to')

Opening .pdf, .zip files is not asking for the credentials. So it is only Microsofts own files which are creating the problem.

Login prompt when opening office documents in SharePoint 2010 library

Environemnt : SharePoint 2010
Windows based authentication being used for site. All SharePoint servers part of the same network.

When i try opening office documents from document library( .docx, xlsx), SharePoint prompts for login credentials even though i am already logged into the website, worse part is that it prompts me for credentials for every document that i open. Also any files other then PDF opens up in the local machine's office application (word or excel) instead of in the browser.

I had migrated this webspplicatoin from MOSS and then did a visual upgrade as well to it, when i verified in the MOSS version of the site after i am log into the site ones it never prompts for login credentails ever when opening an office document.

Any body knows why this is happening.

Long delay opening Word documents from SharePoint 2007 with Office 2010

The first time a document is opened it's fine, opens in just a few seconds.

Subsequently, there is a long delay (about 20 seconds) in the "Contacting server for information..." step.

This happens to all users and all documents, each one will open fast the first time then slowly the second and subsequent times (until, we think, the app pool is recycled - there is no schedules iisreset/reboot).

This does not happen when using Office 2007.

IE6 and 7 exhibit the same behaviour.

Visual C++ Runtime Library error when opening documents in Powerpoint 2010 from Sharepoint link

I posted this question on the Office Powerpoint forum and did not get much response so thought I would try here.   Here is the link to that post  http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/pptshare/thread/36a58d07-b1ad-4935-a14e-086dae8cb786

I'm running Windows 7 with Office 2010.  We have a Sharepoint 2007 server.  Whenever I click a link from our Intranet site I get the error "this application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.  Please contact the applications's support team for more information."  It asks if I want to open in safe mode and I say yes and it never opens.

During testing I also find that if I have a blank powerpoint .ppt file that I try to save to the same document library on the same site it works fine, but if I try to save a blank .pptx file to the site I get the same runtime error.

This does not happen on all powerpoint or office documents being opened from the Intranet.  If I boot to safe mode it works fine.    If I copy the files local they work fine.  Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks so much!!!

Hi all,

Sharepoint 2007. When I try to open documents (clicking on it) in a sharepoint document Library with office 2003, i receive an error that say that the file is not valid and to check the path.

If i try to open document with the scroll down menu and the "edit command", the document open normaly.

Even if i try to open the same document with office 2007 it works normally.

It seem something due to the read only opening of the file...

Can you help me?

Many thanks

SharePoint 2010 prompts to save PDF documents when opening.

Our users are being prompted to save PDF documents when clicking on them in SharePoint 2010.  We set the 'Browser File Handling' setting to 'Permissive' for the Web Application, but we are still being prompted for some of the PDF files.  Some PDF files open fine, though.  Doug

For more than one user in my network, they are unable to edit office documents when opened through a shortcut.  The document opens in read only mode, cannot find a way in office to edit the document such as through the publish or server menu items.  I did a search and this did not resolve the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870853

Our sharepoint server is 2003, coupled with SBS 2003

SQL database 2000

Users are using Office 2007, sp2

Operating System: XP, sp3

IE 8

Users are setup to receive all MS updates, so they have latest updates.

The edit bar shows up when opening the document in sharepoint as read only.  Clicking it allows the user to edit the document.  They have contribute privileges to the library and file in sharepoint.  The file(s) are being opened with a shortcut (right click -> New -> Shortcut, paste in the hyperlink to the document in sharepoint).  Strangely enough, I have the same setup as the other users but using office 2010 and the edit document bar shows up when opening the document in the same manner.  On a side note, some users have infopath 2010 installed, others do not.

Any help would be appreciated, or posts to other topics with solutions that I misse

Document Properties becoming blank for Migrated Documents

Hi there,

PFB the description of the issue :

Basically, we do data migration(Mostly documents)from Webdocs to Sharepoint, So after migrating these docs(using importer tool) into sharepoint site, when we try to Edit the properties of the document(especially office 2007, eg. docx, xlsx)and then save, then this version's properties go blank and never get released. Alternatively, when I upload a doc this problem does not occur. What we tried to analyze is that, while clicking on the edit properties of the doc and save, looks like the document's properties(built-in) which is of blank values are overridden with the 'migrated properties' of the document. But when we upload a doc, since we are supplying all new values initially in the edit page, these values are absorbed into the document's built-in properties, so during the second time edit, there isn't a chance of the document having blank values. Also office 2007 docs can absorb all the customized fields and values that we provide, unlike 97-2003 docs which only has few built-in fields like Title and Author.

Is there a workaround for the Migrated docs ? We dont want the properties of the docs to go blank and go into draft mode. Happens even with simple check-out and check-in. Please share your views.

Content Query web part - how to open documents on first click instead of first opening the document

Hi all, Hopefully this is a easy settings change question, when I create a content query web part and have it look at documents in a document library (Either document library or document centre) when I click on the name of the document (link to doc) in the content query it opens up a page that list the document properties, I then have to click on the "Name" of the document link to open the document but when i close the document I end up at the library that the document is in and not on the page that I clicked on  the link in content query web part. So in some cases a user is on a site and clisks on a link(in a content query web part) that eventaully opens a document in the document centre and when they close the doucment there end up in the document centre.

Any ideas why this behaviour is suddendly happening, it didn't happen when I first added the content wuery web parts, thanks in advance.
