Best way to create a new page in Publishing site?

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
When creating a new page in a publishing site, is there any essential difference between choosing the "Article page with body only" option versus the "Blank Web Part Page" onto which one puts a Web Content Editor web part?  I know that they render differently on the page, but is the content box on the article page just a content editor web part without the chrome?
There are no mistakes; every result tells you something of value about what your are trying to accomplish.

How to create a single entry page for site collections in MOSS 2007

I have  7 site collections containing a few hundred team collaboration sites. Some users are internal (intranet) but most are external (extranet). Extranet users are experiencing problems with losing links to their sites and forgetting which URLs to use. So I would like to create a single entry page that all users can enter after the logon process, which shows a list of sites they have permission to access, and other user-specific information. Perhaps relevant documents, tasks, recently modified documents etc.

I know this sounds like a 'My Site' but we want to use use a general welcome page instead. We use Windows authentication.
What is the best way of doing this and is it something that can be done in SharePoing Designer or does it need to be done in Visual Studio?

Many thanks in advance.

Can't inherit default page layout on a publishing site?

Hi,   Implementing SharePoint for the first time.   We've got a page layout that we want to use as a default. We've got it set as the default in the top site in the site collection. However, when I create a Publishing Site with Workflow, it doesn't default to using the right layout, despite the fact the sub-site's Site Settings / Page Layouts show that it it set to inherit the default page layout from its parent.   Oddly, when I create another type of site, e.g. a Blank Site, it does inherit the default layout.   Any suggestions?   :|Ben

What's the "right" way to create a site template and inherit a custom master page?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in 2007 whatever masterpage you had selected was saved in the site template and was re-created when a new site was created from said template.

It occurs to me that it's different in 2010.

Custom master pages from a site template aren't inherited and they don't keep the specified value when you ask it to before creating the template itself.

So, what's the "correct" way?  What's the difference in making a site template using a blank site or publishing site?

Here I thought I'd be able to make a site template and move on to my next project.

Thanks in advance!

How to create a webpart page with a site menu on the left?

This might be another novice question but i really googled and searched this site and didnt find any answers (even though topics close to this are discussed, this one isnt).

Scenario: I have a webpart i wrote that shows people who has birthday and provides sorting tools (in exact month/ exact day/ name contains string). This webpart has to be displayed as the page's content (in the center, its ~900px wide). This page must have the site menu on the left as well so users can navigate freely.

I tried to create a new webpart page in MOSS and successfully placed the webpart there, but the page wont have the left site menu.

I need that left menu!

I tried creating a web page from a template with a strip (sorry cant find better word to explain that) on the left but that strip only allows to add more webparts, and doesnt allow to show the menu there.

How do i show the website menu (the one with links to Tasks, Lists, Users etc, the one that always shows itself on the /sites/sitename/ page and when viewing Lists) on my web part page?

Or do i have to go other way, meaning, not by using a web part page, but with some other way, like create an aspx page or something?

Please help.

Sharepoint 2007 publishing site home page displays unknown file type security message

I am using sharepoint 2007 sp2, it has been workig fine for the past 8 months but since one of the developers installed .net 4.0 framework, every time we create a new sharepoit publishng site or extend and existing application the home url displays an "Unknown File Type" security warning message and asks users to download the file.  If i manually tupe in the full url http://www.mysite.com/pages/default.aspx it is displayed correctly. I have uninstalled .net 4 from the server but i still have the same  error. I have tried to replicate this error on a development server but sharepoitn works fine on that even with .net 4.0 installed.

Has anyone had the same issue ? I would appreciate  any suggestios or help with troubleshootig this issue.

How to set default Image to RichFieldImage control in custom Publishing Page layout in Site defini

How to set  default Image to RichFieldImage control  in custom Publishing Page layout in Site definition?

create a dynamic field in the master page (site.Master)

I'm starting with ASP.NET MVC (1.0). I have a problem to resolve.

I have developed a web applicaton (an application of articles like e-commerce) with a head (logo and menu). I have defined the head (logo and menu) in the Master page (site.master). Now, I must display the number of articles in the head in a field (like the number of articles in the virtual basket in the e-commerce).

I can read the number of articles in the data base (in the controller), but i can't integrate it in the master page.

Programmatically create publishing page and fill with content.

I have a bunch of HTML which has been exported from a different platform.
This HTML could be located in a database or contained within an HTML file.

I am looking for some guidance on the best way to programmatically create a publishing page in SharePoint at a specific site location, then populating the RichHtmlField Publishing Web Control (PublishingPageContent) with the HTML that has been exported from one of the sources mentioned above.

Any suggestions/advice you can offer will be much appreciated.

404 Page Not Found Error When Trying to Create a Site From a Custom Site Template

I just moved a site collection from a one server to another, and now I can't make copies of my sites using custom site templates.

The details of my site structure are in the next paragraph, in case they are relevant.
On the original server, I created custom templates for my sites, and checked the Include Content checkbox
when creating the templates. Everything works perfectly on that server. When I moved the whole site collection to another
server using stsadm backup/restore everything was there, including my customized web parts. But now I can't create new sites
from templates - and I'm I'm not trying to use templates created on the original server. I'm creating new templates on the new
server. It successfully creates the templates, but when I try to create a new site from one of those templates, I get a
"HTTP 404 Page Not Found" page. It succeeds in creating the new site, and the new site shows up in my navigation bar,
but when I click on the new site, I get a "404 Page Not Found" page.

On the original server, I created one top level site for my whole department. Under that, I have one subsite for each of our
external clients. Under each of those, I have one subsite for each project for that client. I used a Team site as my starting
point at each of the 3 leve

Changing the graphics on the home page of a SharePoint site

When you create a site in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services by using the default Team Site template, the home page includes two default graphics. A Windows SharePoint Services graphic appears in the body of the page, and a picture of a house in a circle appears near the site title. You can change these graphics to customize your site. Changing the smaller graphic requires a Windows SharePoint Services compatible Web page editor
