Posted By:      Posted Date: October 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

On our sharepointsite.net site when we went to open a document from a document library a dialog opened asking

You are about to open
Name: xxxxxx
From: xxxxxxx

How would you like to open this file?
Read Only

i have just setup our own sharepoint server and when you open a document to goes straight to read only mode rather than asking how to open it

how do i get our site to ask this before opening the document?

Regards, Stephen.

Check-out issue when opening a document from a document library when a read-only copy is open

We have an issue when a user has a read-only copy of a document from SharePoint open and then tries to check-out and edit another copy of the document (i.e. from the document library) the checked out copy is not connected to the web server. For the user it will look the same they will make edits, save and then close, but when they do so the document is not updated in SharePoint - it may be saved locally in their SP drafts, but the user will think that they have lost their version. We then get the checked out to another user error and you have to discard changes to get the document working again. Steps to reproduce this issue: * click on the name of a office doc on a Document Library * Make sure "Read Only" is selected and click "ok" * Minimize open document * click on the same file on the Document Library * Make sure "check out and edit" is selected and the "Use my local drafts folder" checkbox is ticked. Select OK. * Edit document and press save. Changes are never saved back in SharePoint, they are only on the local draft. We are using MOSS with SP2. Clients are on Office 2003 and 2007 Is this normal behaviour? Is there anything that can be done to prevent this from happening?

WSS2.0 opening pdf documents an error message appears: The document could not be saved. The file may

Hi All,. In a WSS2.0 document library, a user is trying to open pdf files. However, an error message is displayed: 'The document could not be saved. The file may be read only, or another user may have it open. Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder'. No one else has the file open. When the user saves the file using Save As (as it is apparently Read Only) and then saves the file back to the SharePoint site, all previous versions of the file disappear. The user has noted that this has been happening since today, and she had some other network issues that have been resolved. No other users are experiencing this problem.  Not sure if this problem is related to the network problems the user was facing. I've had the user reboot but this has not resolved it. Any ideas?

Opening New Word Document with Template Selection in C#

From a Windows Forms Application, I need to launch Word. There is an option to create a new document template in the Application. So to implement this, I need to launch the template selection window (You get it when you click File->New in 2007). Once the user selects the template, a new document is created with the selected template. How do I achieve this using Word Object Model?

Office 2007 Documents Open in Read-Only when Opening them from a WSS 2.0 Document Library

Hi, When any of our Windows 7 Pro computers that run Office 2007 Pro attempt to open a Word document that resides in a WSS 2.0 document library by using the drop down menu and selecting "Edit with MS Word", the documents open in read-only.  Our work-around is to save the document locally, modify it, and then save it back to the document library. We have some Windows XP and Vista systems that run Office 2007 and they are fine and can simply edit the document and save it.  We also have a handful of pc's that run Office 2003 and they are not having any issues either. Things I've tried: Office 2007 Repair - no luck Office Reinstall - no luck Some registry mod HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12\Internet\OpenDocumentReadWrite=1 (noted on a MSKB article) - no luck and after re-reading the article it clearly states that this will not address content hosted on WSS or SPS sites Clearing IE temp files, resttting IE to defaults - no luck Once again, this only seems to happen to Win7Pro pc's that run Office 2007.  Honestly, I can't tell if IE8 has anything to do with this. Any thoughts or help would be extrememly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Document Set - Problem when uploading multiple files with "Launch forms in a dialog" disabled

Hello, Has anyone come across this before? I have a basic document library for which I have enabled "Allow management of content types" and disabled "Launch forms in a dialog".  Both of these settings are in the "Advanced Settings" page.  Also, the document library does not have versioning enabled and check out is not required. I added the OOTB "Document Set" content type to this document library and allowed OOTB "Document" content type documents in this document set.  This document set does not have any default content. The issue arises after I upload multiple files and click the "Done" button.  After I do this, the browser redirects to the top level of the site!  For example, if I uploaded to my document set at http://server/sites/anyname/doclib, I am redirected to http://server/. This issue has come up in both a standard server and an enterprise server. Steps to repeat issue: Create a document set Open the document set Select "Upload Multiple Documents" Drag and drop or browse for files Click "OK" Click "Done" Actually, this issue also occurs when "Launch forms in a dialog" is enabled.  In this case, you just have to navigate to the upload form directly (with all the necessary query string parameters, of course). Has anyone else seen this issu

Opening pdf from Sharepoint 2010 Document Center

Is there a way to open a PDF in a web browser, just like Office Web Apps?  Everything I've tried results in the PDF being saved first.  I do not want to save these files, I only want to view them.

Error when opening Excel document from sharepoint

Hi, I am using Sharepoint 2010 and Excel 2010 x64.

I created a document library where I host a simple excel file for testing. When I click on it , it opens in the web browser just fine.

When I chose to open it with Excel , I get this error : The document could not be opened for editing. A microsoft Sharepoint Foundation compatible application could not be found to edit the document.

I already tried as well to do a check out before opening it and it still doesn't work.

Any ideas ?

PS : same thing happens with Visio 2010.

Opening Word 2003 document from sharepoint site in word 2010.

When using sharepoint services with word 2003 on an XP machine, everything works fine. We bought some new computers where we now have windows 7 and office 2007/2010. These work perfect too. Even the 64-bit computers.

We are very happy with the new office version, so we decided to upgrade the entire company. As a test, we upgraded 1 PC. But this is not working. So we upgraded office, later we reinstalled it. But nothing helps. This is the problem: I surf to the document click it to open it, and then Word hangs. "contacting server". This is not always the case, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This even with the same document.

We would really like to upgrade to office 2010 entirely. But we're not going to buy licences we cannot use. Anybody got a solution?

Link to my Office Document opening in Read-Only mode

I have an excel document in my Pages library which has document check-out disabled and I have contribute permissions on the library.

When I go to the Pages library and click on the name of the excel document, it rightly opens and allows me to edit it and then save it back.

BUT, when I put a link to that document on an aspx page and click on it, it opens in Read-Only mode.

I get the same behavior for Word documents.

How do I get the link on the aspx page to be editable?

Opening Document: Sometimes asks about open/edit, other times opens straightaway: Why?

Greetings all,

Another end-user question that I can't answer (but maybe someone can help with):

When users open documents from home (typically) but sometimes from here within the network, Sharepoint does not ask if they want to OPEN or EDIT the document. The result is that the system automatically opens for EDITING, which has the effect of checking the document out.

Of course, they don't realize they have the document checked out, and it creates a hassle when others need to work on it instead.

Any ideas about how we can enforce the pop-up in all cases, e.g., so people ALWAYS have to select whether they want to open or check out/edit, in all cases?

Thanks for your suggestions!
