Is it wiser to uninstall SQL Server 2008 Express SP1 before installing SQL Server 2008 Express SP2, or to create a second instance along side Sp1?

Having problems installing/setting up SQL Server 2008 Express/R2 for ASP.NET user management on deve

I'm a bit new to installing and configuring, well, just about anything regarding databases, so please bear with me. I'm currently building a couple of ASP.NET MVC 2 sites.  I'm following along with the MVCMusicStore tutorial, and am trying to set up user management using ASP.NET's configuration tool.  The problem is that ASP.NET can't 'see' the database. I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my laptop.  It's the version which is available on the Web Platform Installer (I believe it's Express).  When I try running the aspnet_sqlreg.exe program to set up my user management database, it can't tell that I'm running any version of SQL Server at all.  I get an exception about 'named pipes', and some other things I don't understand at the moment. Obviously, this is all a bit over my head.  Is there an idiot proof guide or tutorial available that describes, step-by-step, how to: 1. Install SQL Server 2008 on a development PC 2. How to configure it to be used by Visual Studio 2010 Professional 3. How to properly upload/modify the db on the production server with what's on the development PC Essentially, all the things that the ASP.NET tutorials gloss over.  Any suggestions, links to documentation, or other nudges in the right direction would be immensely appreciated.

Unable to install SQL Server 2008 Express R2 after installing .NET 4.0

Hi experts, I intend to redistribute SQL Server 2008 Express R2 in my installer. I've extracted the setup files from SQLEXPR32_x86.exe and pass in the appropriate command line parameters during the setup. Recently, I noticed if I applied the following Windows Update: .NET 4.0 Client Profile, I will hit into the following error when I installed SQL express. .NET Runtime 4.0 Error Reporting EventType clr20r3, P1 setup100.exe, P2 10.50.1600.1, P3 4bb67524, P4 mscorlib, P5 4.0.0.0, P6 4ba1da6f, P7 44f0, P8 32, P9 system.security.security, P10 NIL. .NET Runtime Application: setup100.exe Framework Version: v4.0.30319 Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception. Exception Info: System.Security.SecurityException Stack: at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.DebugBreak() at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.Main() Running the setup.exe from a file server will give these errors but if I copied the entire setup files to a local folder and run setup.exe from there, it runs fine. May I know what am I missing? I definitely need to support to install SQL express running from a file server location. Thanks, MK

Error 0x84BB0001 while installing SQL Server Express 2008 SP1

Hello,   One of our internal customers is getting an error 0x84BB0001 while installing SQL Server 2008 Express SP1.  His operating system is Windows XP SP3 and he should have all of SQL's prerequisites. I've seen a few postings of this error, but no explanations/resolutions.   Thanks.

Error Installing SQL Server 2008 Express: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission

I have tried installing SQL Server 2008 multiple times on my machine, and I always receive this error about 3/4 of the way through: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission.

I have tried installing both SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools and SQL Server 2008 with Advanced Services, and they both fail the same way. I am trying to do a new stand-alone installation.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP3.

Looking into the error, some forums say I have to install it from THE Administrator account, and not an account with administrator permissions; it also cannot be in Safe Mode, because then the Windows Installer won't work. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to login to the Administrator account. I can go to the home login screen, do ctrl+alt+del twice, and attempt to login to the Administrator account, but I receive this error: Unable to Log You on because of an Account Restriction.

Other forums say that in the Server Configuration section, all you have to do is provide the username and a strong password from an administrative account on the computer, and it doesn't have to be THE Administrator. Well, I did that, but for some reason it doesn't recognize my username and passw

Installing SQL Server Express 2008 R2 over SQL Server Express 2008

We recently purchased a server that has SQL Server Express 2008 installed. I would like to install SSE 2008 R2. Do I need to uninstall SSE 2008 before installing R2?

There is currently no data in the database(s). I believe it's bascially a fresh install from the factory.

Follow up. I would like to rename the computer. I assume I would want to do this before installing SSE 2008 R2.

question about installing sql server 2008 express with another server...

Gentlemen.

I am doing a self-study of databases and right now i'm playing with mssql server 2008 express edition.

One of my buddies asked me, if i'm going to install two mssql version. let us say i have mssql server 2005 already installed. If i install 2008, will it affect everything that was done in mssql 2005? also, if i uninstall one of it, will it affect each other? even in a small fraction of the settings?

P.S. sorry, i haven't tried and test it myself because i'm still looking for an older mssql server express edition and the question we have right now is only based on our curiosity. Advance thanks to anyone who can share their knowledge and experience in this matter.

Installing SQL Server Express 2008: Powershell failed

During the install of SQL Server Express 2008 I get an error "Powershell failed". I tried to find a Powershell download but only found a "Powershell snap in" and that won't install on XP Home SP3. I get a message it should be installed using "Programs and Services" or "Servers". I can't find these on XP Home (perhaps using a dutch windows version doesn't help). I just want to install SQL Express and I dont need Powershell.

I tried the Windows Weblauncher but this doesnt work on XP Home.

I have succesfully installed and used SQL server on XP Home, but after a crash and a new installation of Windows with all updates, including SP3, I can't get it working anymore,

How can I (1) install SQL Server Express 2008 without this Powershell error by skipping the powershell check or (2) how can I install PowerShell first on my XP Home computer to run a succesful installation afterwards.

installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Express on a PC that has MSDE installed

Hi - My PC has MSDE installed on it and I'd like to install Express to take advantage of some new functionality in Express.  The PC runs Windows XP Home Edition.  Here are my questions:

1. Is it possible to have both MSDE & Express on one PC without causing problems?

2. How do I move databases from MSDE over to Express?

3. How will my query editor (Toad) know which SQL Server version to point to?

4. When setting up ODBCs will the two different SQL Servers appear there?

I have a hunch that this is a fairly basic thing so if there are any useful threads or websites on this topic that anyone knows about, please do post the links.  Of course, any answers to the specific questions listed above would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, knot

How to connect to local instance of SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express ?

I just installed SQL Server 2008 Management studio Express on my Vista machine.

i tried connecting to local machine using :

.\sqlexpress, (local)\sqlexpress, or .\SQLExpress, MyPCNAME\SQLExpress

nothing is working, getting this error:

Cannot connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Can't Create ODBC to Local SQL Server Express 2008

Hello. I have SQL Server Express 2008 SP1 LOCALLY on my Windows XP Professional SP3 box. I have databases already created in Access 2007 that I imported into SQL. Now I want to keep the front end Access forms for data entry but have them connect to the databases in SQL. What I can't seem to do is connect from Access to the SQL db's because I can't create the ODBC connection. When I try to connect, I get the following two 'Connection failed' errors: 1. SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 10061 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]TCP Provider: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. 2. SQLState: 'HYT00' SQL Server Error: 0 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Login timeout expired Additionally, this information may help. 1. Windows firewall is turned off. 2. In SQL Server Configuration Manager > SQL Server Network Configuration > Protocols for SQLEXPRESS, Shared Memory, Named Pipes and TCP/IP are all 'Enabled'. The order is Shared Memory (1), Named Pipes (2) and TCP/IP (3). 3. In SQL Server Configuration Manager > SQL Native Client 10.0 Configuration > Client Protocols, the above three are also 'Enabled'. The order is Shared Memory (1), Named Pipes (2) and TCP/IP (3). Double-clicking TCP/IP tells me that the default port is 1433. 4. Running "netstat -ano", I see no entries for [myIPaddress]:1433.
