SQL Server 2005 - Maintenance Jobs take a long time after OS Upgrade

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 27, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

We have SQL 2005 Ent Edition (SP2) on W2k3 R2 Ent Edition. This OS was previously on Std Edtion and we had done an In-Place upgrade to Ent Edition some time back. Since then the Maintenance plans - Update Stas & Index Rebuild seem to take double the time to execute. I do believe this could be due to an already busy disk subsystem (RAID 5 array).

Can someone pls advice what could be possible reason for this sudden increase in the maintenance job execution time.

Moving a Copy of SQL Report Server 2005 and Upgrade to 2008

Hello, We have SQL 2005 Report Server in a Windows 2003 64 bit server box. We want to create a copy of this report server database somewhere in the domain, so that we can access it for a different purpose. My question is, will there be any complications with this? I'm thinking about the encryption key that's needed to access the database. If we are successful with this, we might also want to upgrade to SQL 2008. Thanks for your help,   Elizabeth K.

SharePoint 2007 + PowerPoint gives "Contacting the server for information" for a long time

I've never had this issue for but today all of a sudden I tried to open a PowerPoint document posted to a document library on our SharePoint 2007 site and it gave a message saying "Contacting the server for information" for a long time.  It eventually opened but not until after 5-10 minutes.  Does anyone know what might have caused this?  The file itself is pretty small, only 70KB, and as I said we haven't had this problem before.

PAGEIOLATCH_SH causing long delays after upgrade to SQLSERVER 2005

Some processes in our PeopeSoft system are running extremely long after upgrading from SQLSERVER 2000 to SQLSERVER 2005 SP4. Processes that use to run in 15 minutes now take 4 hours to run. Some processes run in the same amount of time and don't seem to be affected by the upgrade. When I examine the long running processes in Activity Monitor I see the wait type showing up as PAGEIOLATCH_SH. Any ideas as to what might be going on? Our SQLSERVER implementation is a standard install. What should we be looking at to improve the situation?

SQL Server 2005 (X64) Maintenance Clean Up Task Using Hours Option for File Age

I'm running into an issue with SQL Server 2005 64-bit and the maintenance clean up tasks.  I have it set up to delete any transaction logs or backups older than 12 hours.  It seems that there could be some sort of bug because, according to the log files, SQL is running the clean up for 12 days instead.  I've created a work around for this by using execute transact-sql tasks instead, but was wondering if there's a problem with my version of SQL Server, like an SP or patch that I've overlooked. Here's my version information: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (X64)   Oct 14 2005 00:35:21   Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation  Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

Slow sql-server after upgrade from SQL-Server 2005 x64 standard to SQL-Server 2008 R2 x64 enterprise

We moved our databases to new hardware today (using copy database wizard)

The new hardware should be better than the old one.

We went from 28 GB ram to 128 GB.

We went from 16 cores to 32 cores (with even more cache etc.). We also moved from external SAN with 40 disks to intern disks (8 Samsung SS805 100gb ssd slc)

According to our own metrics we could get twice the IO using IO m

SQL Server 2005 Maintenance Plans - Reporting And Logging Does Not Work

I have a maintenance plan built on a SQL Server 2005 instance that rebuilds indexes, rebuilds statistics, checks for database integrity, performs a maintenance cleanup, and performs a history cleanup.  This job runs once per week.

In the "Reporting and Logging" section I have the following options:

- Generate a text file report is checked

- Create a new file is selected

- A valid destination folder is identified

- Send report to an email recipient is checked

- A valid agent operator is selected

- Log extended information is checked

The job seems to complete successfully and a report is created and emailed, but the only information in the report is as follows:

Quest SLSSQLMaint Utility.
Logging on to SQL Server 'DEVSQL01' with Windows Authentication
Logged on to SQL Server 'DEVSQL01'

[1] Delete old text report files...
[1] Execution Time: 0 hrs, 0 mins, 0 secs.

[2] Send DBMail or SendMail report file....

[2] Execution Time: 0 hrs, 0 mins, 1 secs.

End of maintenance plan 'DB Maintenance Plan (No Backups) [DB Maintenance]' on 9/29/2010 8:40:49 PM (Success)
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\MSSQL\Binn\slssqlmaint.exe Process Exit Code: 0 (Success)

Where is the information about the rest of the maintenance plan?&nbs

Upgrade from SQL Server 9.0.2047 (Express 2005 SP1 I believe) to SP3

I am running the version of SQL I listed in the title and like I said, I believe it is SQL Express 2005 SP1 and I just want to upgrade to SP3.  I tried installing it via Microsoft Update, but that failed without giving me any detail as to why.  When I try to run the SQL Exp 2005 SP3 installer (SQLEXPR.EXE) it just acts like it is going to install a new instance of it.

I saw a post about an unattended upgrade, but frankly I'm not very familiar with that and not really comfortable with doing it.  Is there not an installer I can run that will just upgrade to SP3?

Thanks to anyone who can provide some assistance for me, I appreciate it.

ASP.NET upgrade seems to be taking a very long time to start

At work I'm tryhing to upgrade an ASP.NET 2.0 app (which we wrote using VB.NET 2005) to ASP.NET 4.0.  I had a few problems during the upgrade, but eventually worked them all out.  At the end of the day I decided to give it a quick compile and see if I'd get the start page, so I hit F5 in VS 2010.  I left it that way, and man was it acting weird.  VS 2010 wasn't responding to anything.  If I hovered the mouse over VS 2010's minimize or close buttons, in the upper right corner, then those buttons were flashing very rapidly.  I'm not sure what was going on.  After waiting 15 minutes to see if it would come up, I decided to try clicking on the close button.  Nothing happened.  Eventually, I had to leave (I take public transit, and I have to leave when the bus comes), but I thought I'd leave it going as is, in hopes that it might fix itself.

But what I want to know is this, is this pretty standard behavior?  Does it normally take this long to do this?  This website is of modest size (<100 pages).

How do I upgrade and overlay SQL Server 2005 Express with SQL Server 2008 R2

We are upgrading SQL server2005 Express to SQL Server 2008 R2.  We want to replace 2005 Express with 2008 R2 on existing system.  We have lots of questions about how to perform the upgrade safely and pull in our existing databases.  The existing database files are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1.  Also, we'll want to use the existing instance name to avoid having to reconfigure all of the installed clients at our user's workstations.

Should we uninstall the 2005 Express version first?  Will that keep the existing databases on the system?

Or can we install 2008 R2 while the databases are live under the 2005 Express, or should we shut down 2005 Express first?

Will  2008 R2 use the same data folder or create a new one?  If it uses the same folder will it automatically recognize our existing databases?  If it creates a new one, I suppose we can use the migration Wizard.

Thanks for any help....

Backup Maintenance Plan Failure SQL Server 2005

Hi All,
I have three maintenance Plans Full, Differential and Transaction Log backup. Full and Transaction Log backup plans are working fine. In the all the maintenance plans I am taking backup of almost 60 databases.

The problem is with the differential backup plan. The backup plan is keep failing with the following errors:

Linked server issue on test box, post upgrade 2005 to 2008 R2

In an effort to do some testing prior to upgrading our environment to 2008 R2, I made a test instance on our Dev box.  2005 instance, copied as many things as I could think of from various other instances.  Made a basic linked server to our main cluster, had a repeating job to email me results of a query across that link every few hours.

Everything was working fine until the upgrade finished.  It completed at ~7pm.  The email at 6PM came through fine (while the upgrade was in progress), the email at 8pm didn't come through.  Checked various things (DB mail was still working, tested fine).  It couldn't access the data across the linked server.  I tried deleting that link and remaking it.  Errors out.  Tried running the same scripts we use to create our standard linked servers, error out.  The only ones that I can set up and function are links to other instances on the same box.

I've looked around at other fixes for this error message and none seem to make any difference.  Log in with Domain cred's, log in with the sa account, no difference.  I can connect from other instances & servers back to this one, just not outbound from this one.  And it worked prior to the upgrade I applied to it.  All other instances on the box are 2005 as well.

Here is the message I ge

SQL Server 2005 CPU use 100% and Connection Time Out

I have a thin C# application with SQL server 2005 standard Edition . Database size is 15GB . The server has 16 GB RAM and 2.6 Ghz Xeon processor, with 4 cores. Application has lot of stored procedures performs some calculations and transfer the data from one database named a to second database named b. Users can also get the reports from report database .

1: The application is much slow when it perform analysis (some calculations )

2: CPU usage goes to 100% and sometimes application crashes with this message.

timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

I have to optimize the application . I have found some duplicate non cluster indexes.

for example if i have primary key PK index (clustered) on the fields 1, 2 ,3

there  is another index which is non clustered on the same fields (1,2,3)

there are around 10 to 15 tables with the same duplicate non clustered indexes.

I have few Questions :

How can i  configure the sql server 2005 to perform parallel executions of queries to utilize the all cores of CPU.

2: How can i know which query or store procedure is taking too much execution time and getting system resources.

3: How to know which index is fragmented&n

SQL Server 2005 Database recovery takes long when starting

I have a large database which is consistently taking between 30 and 60 minutes to come up after restarting SQL Server.  How can I speed this up?  Please read below before responding.

I have a Winows 2003, 2 node cluster running 1 instance of SQL Server 2005 enterprise ed.    The server has 64GB of RAM, and 4 Quad core chips (16 logical processors).  The storage is on SAN, and is a mix of RAID 10 and RAID 5 volumes.  The instance has multiple DB's in it but 1 is far and away the largest @ 2TB allocated (about 1TB actual data).   The database in question is broken into many datafiles as follows:

Primary filegroup = 1 10GB datafile

Secondary filegroup = 8 x 100GB datafiles spread evenly over 4 seperate volumes for I/O performance.

Partitioning filegroups = many many files used for a partitioned table (file sizes ranging from 1.5GB to 20GB)

Again, my issue is the following.   This 2TB database takes close to an hour to startup everytime the instance of SQL Server restarts, failsover etc...

Couple of notes:

1) We have instant file initialization configured

2) Recovery model = simple

3) Recovery interval = 0

4) There are no active large transactions running when the instance goes down
