Renaming a clustered SSAS instance

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 27, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Microsoft has posted advice here:  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143692(v=SQL.100).aspx   that says you can't use the 'Instance Rename' tool to change an clustered instance's name.  They mention something called the Rename Instance dialog box.

Do they the just mean change the DNS name for the instance via the general tab on the name's properties dialog?

Could it be that simple, just like changing the name of any other clustered virtual machine?

SQL 2008 R2 clustered instance does not start in single user mode

Hi I am testing the startup of a SQL 2008 R2 clustered instance (Windows 2008 R2) using single user mode but it fails with : Error: 17058, Severity: 16, State: 1. initerrlog: Could not open error log file ''. Operating system error = 3(The system cannot find the path specified.) - I am running the following command from the default sql installation : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQL01\MSSQL\Binn>sqlservr.exe -c -m -s SQL01 - The cluster service on the passive node has been shutdown. - The SQL Server and SQL Agent services have been set to offline in Failover Cluster Manager. Any assistance greatly appreciated. Regards, PK

The SQL Server failover cluster instance name 'Server02' already exists as a clustered resource. S

Hello, I have a node of 2 servers of Win 2008 R2 Enterprise and trying to install a 2nd instance in a SQL 2008 R2 Cluster. I had SQL_INSTANCE2 previously installed that I removed from the two nodes. Now when I attempt to install it again from scratch, in setup GUI where I specify the SQL Server Network Name and enter the previously entered name "Server02", I get a failure in the setup with the following error message: "The SQL Server failover cluster instance name 'Server02' already exists as a clustered resource. Specify a different failover cluster instance name." How do I fix this problem, I don't want to enter a new name like "Server03" in order to proceed with the setup, because when I do enter "Server03" the setup does continue without an error message. So what am I missing? Do I have to ask the DNS administrator to see if there's an A record for "Server03" and have him delete it so that the setup works? Or the fix is by doing something else? I would appreciate any help. Thank you

Can't remove instance from clustered server

Hi ,

I'm using SQL Server 2008 and I have on Active-Active Cluster on
a Windows Server2008.

I have one SQL instance on that Server. The other node I had SSAs wich I want to uninstall and be with another instance of SQL.
I had SSIS has a clsutered here also.

I unistalled the SSAS and made Prepare SQL to Cluster intallation on Node 1 (that already had one SQL instance).

When I tried to Complete the SQL Failover clustered installation I cannot reach the instance and after a few atteps I cannot connect with SSIS on this clustered.

I cannot remove the SQL instance from ADD/Remove Programs because it gives me the error that this instance is used has a cluster.

So this is what I want to do:

-Remove the instancethat says that is clustered but I can't see the cluster on Failover Clustered Administration.
-Setup SSIS as a clustered service on the instance that was previous installed(I can reach the SSIS editing SQL Agent Job but I can't connect through Database Engine.Through the Agent all the packages are unreacheable but visible.)

I already See that I can't add features to a clustered installation but I read that it's possible to Add SSis if I stop both nodes. How can I stop both nodes to install SSIS.

Moving an Instance from non-clustered to clustered?

There is a non-clustered SQL 2008 R2 instance on Windows 2008 R2 (node1). There is also another identical server (node2). The app owner wants us to make the existing instance clustered while keeping the instance name and minimum downtime. What would be the best way to do that?

If we are allowed to change the instance name, I would;

- Install "Failover Clustering" feature

- Config SAN

- Install a new named-clustered sql insance

- Copy databases, replication setup etc.

- Remove the local(non-clustered) instance

But, I can not think how we can keep the same instance name without removing the existing instance first.

Any idea?

Problems uninstalling a clustered instance

I upgraded a SQL 2005 named instance to 2008.
After this succeeded, I started adding two other instances.
After adding the first instance to the active node, I went to the passive node to add it there. The install detected that I had installed it as a default (MSSQLSERVER) instance instead of a named instance. So I went back to the active node, and was removing the instance so that it can be reinstalled.

The uninstall has stalled (it's now been 2 hours since the last log entry). On the "Remove Node Progress" screen, I have:
Performing Windows Installer actions.
{progress bar, about 55%}

In the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20100929_165557\Detail.txt log file, I have this as the last few entries:

SQL Server Express2008 R2 brings app down, instance problem

I have tried dozens of changes and modifications to many settings as I will outilne here and all to no avail.

The short answer here though is that I uninstalled SQL Sever Express 2008 R2 and went back to the "NON" 2008 R2 and got things working. But like the fool I am wanted to run on the more current rev and updated again, all problems returned....

VWD2008 Express

SQL Server Express 2008

I was orginally getting this message after updating to SQL Sever Express 2008 R2, I removed VWD 2008 Express from the web server, no good, then uninstalled SQL Server 2008 Express R2 and reinstalled SQL Server 2008 Express. worked but had issues, couldn't install MGTM Studio. Then I removed SQL 2008, cleaned folders and reg. Reloaded SQL Server 2008 Express, still flaky, couldn't get the Management Studio to install. So I removed it again and used the Web Platform Installer, which worked but loaded 2008 R2 again. Which brought back the message.

Error "user does not have permission to perform this operation" with User Instance = True.

I setup SQL Server 2005 / SQL Express. All works fine in SQL Server 2005.

I am connecting to a SQL Database from VS 2005,  Tools/Connect to Database. I set the Data Source to "Microsoft SQL Server Database File (SqlClient)" (meaning SQL Server Express) and User Instance = True, and Integrated Security = True.

The above is working successfully on all machines except my Laptop. On my Laptop, I am getting this error "user does not have permission to perform this operation". On my Laptop, if I change User Instance = False, it works fine. Also, If I connect to SQL Server 2005 it works fine only if User Instance = False.

I tried all kind of security changes, nothing worked. For example, I setup Everyone as Full Control for the Folder and the MDF File of SQL Server. I gave my user ID as sysadmin role in SQL Server Express. Also, I enabled creating User Instance form SQL Server Express, Nothing is working.

Appreciate your help.

Sharepoint Blog Post List Renaming in onet.xml

Ihave created a Site definition and added a Posts Listview in the same.

<View List="$Resources:core,lists_Folder;/$Resources:core,blogpost_Folder;" BaseViewID="10" WebPartZoneID="Left" WebPartOrder="1"/>

This list is created using my own schema.xml which i have copied from the Blog site template.

I wanted to rename the title of the list [not Title field] which is coming to be Posts right now.

Is there anyway to do it?

Any help appreciated

Kerberos between MOSS 2007 and SSAS 2005

I realize this is probably going to be one of those vague questions that I am not going to get much help on here, but I thought I'd give this a shot before we go the MS Incident route on monday.

We have tried to setup Kerberos between MOSS 2007 AND SSAS 2005 to no avail.  We have been through the knowledge base articles outlining the setup multiple times with all the experts on MOSS and Security here where I work.  We've used other materials we have on kerberos here.  But the end result is that the double hop is not happening.  We are trying to connect three ways: excel services, ssrs 2005 in integrated mode, and Sharepoint KPI's (using analysis services).  In every case the connection is not happening.

Other details are that the ssrs integrated mode seems to be setup right because I do get a report (albiet all it has is a connection error message).  Excel services works fine if I use the unattended service account, but when I switch the odc file to windows (should cause kerberos to kick in) it fails.  When I try to add a kpi to the kpi list it can't retrieve a list of kpi's from ssas.

In all cases I am the user trying to perform these operations, and I have total access to the cube -- I'm the developer.  I have no problems connecting to the cube directly through excel, so the security at that end passes t

How to detect and prevent new browser instance

Hi Folks,

I have a problem w/ a web app which is probably fairly common, but I cannot find any solutions anywhere. Hopefully someone will have an idea.

The web app in question provides a UI for editing a client (in the business sense, not the browser sense), identified by a ClientID.  I store the ClientID in Session, which gets passed from page to page, along with a number of other pieces of data in Session.  Works great.

The problem is that if the user opens a new browser window using Ctrl N or File->New Window (in IE), the new window comes up with the same page as the current page, with the same session info. Then if the user navigates to a different client in the 2nd window, the ClientID in session refers to the new client. If they go back to the original browser window and save, the original client gets saved using the 2nd ClientID, and all hell breaks loose, because now the data from the two jobs are intertwined.

I have enabled trace and verified that the new browser window uses the same SessionID as the original.  If an entirely new instance of IE is opened, it has a different SessionID, so is not a problem.  I have not yet investigated other browsers, such as Chrome or Firefox.

Is there any way to determine if a browser instance is opened for a web app which is already open in

Common session for different browser instance

Hello everyone,

I am working on a website which uses a common database shared by another 2-3 websites.  Now i am having a requirement that whenever a user clicks a link provided on another website and comes to my website and if the user is already logged in to my website then my website should not ask him to login again it should by pass the login page and show the next page.

Here the problem is i am not able to get the session objects in newly opened browser window even if the user is already logged in to my website in another browser window. I am not sure but i thing IE uses two different processes for two different browser instance and because of that i am not getting the session objects required.

Deos anyone have some idea on my problem.

Note: I can not ask the another website vendor to pass anything as a querystring.
