Flat File connection manager outputcolumnwidth 50 default

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 27, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

We are developing a process to import data from a CSV file that we are designing.  Although right now our CSV file has 23 columns, over time we will gradually be adding more columns (roughly 1 to 2 more columns per month).  Although the process has worked great I have run into a snag.  When we initially set up the connection manager we went in to the "Advanced" section to specifically set the outputcolumnwidth field sizes (they all defaulted to 50).  The problem is that whenever we modify this connection manager to accept the new columns that we add to the CSV file it resets all of the outputcolumnwidth values to 50 no matter how we try it.  Is there some way to make them keep the values that we set?

For example, our first field is "ID" and we initially changed it from "50" (the default) to "15".  The next month when we added two new columns, the "15" got changed back to "50" and we had to set it again.  This happens for all of the already-specified fields.

Loading multiple flat files files- MultipleFlatFile Connection Manager vs For each loop approach

Hi Folks

I need to load multiple  files from a folder into a package. Can someone explain the pros and cons of using the "Multiple Flat file connection manager" vs using a" For each loop" type approach (e.g http://bi-polar23.blogspot.com/2007/08/loading-multiple-excel-files-with-ssis.html).

Many thanks

Multiple Flat Files Connection manager - unexpected behavior when using wildcard

Hi

I want to import multiple text files into a destination file.  This works fine when I point the connection manager directly to the 3 files that I need to import. However, these 3 files will change and sometimes there may be more or less files. Therefore I planned to use a wildcard (*). However, when I use a wildcard in the connection manager I get unexpected results - some of the records get duplicated in the output.  I have demonstrated this issue in  this short video clip. Apologies for the slight buzz / hum on the audio (you can just turn the audio off).

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Join 2 flat file data flows - retain unmatched rows

I have two data flows from two separate flat files. They may contain matching IDs (account number), in this case specific data from each flow should be used to create one row. When there is no match, the rows would stand on their own. At the end of the flow, I need both flows combined into one flow, with one record for each key record (account number). If I were able to use a look-up, I could easily union the no-match data flow back into the match data flow and have the desired result. I cannot use a look-up, since the source is flat files, but this is exactly the functionality I am trying to achieve. Solutions I want to avoid: staging tables, and cache transformations. Any ideas are appreciated.

Excel Connection Manager Problem

I am building a package that has 2 tasks that need to use the same excel connection manager. I use a execute sql task to dynamically build a table from the headers of the excel sheet  ,then I use an excel source component to load the data from the sheet. However when I try to edit the excel source and switch the data access mode to a variable and select the variable(for the path), when I try to close the editor I get this message 'S:\myfolder'.  It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data. I need this package to access the same folder each time because the files will be placed in that folder. This package also has a branch for loading a text file into sql server. It access the same folder but uses a flatfile connection manager It looks like permissions on the folder are correct

Issue: Load {NUL} from flat file to "Flat File Source" faild.

Hi guys, I've met a strange issue when I was working to use SSIS to load data from flat file to database. It is a story about {NUL}. Sample Flat File: FIELD_SAMPLE|OTHERS ABC{NUL}DEFG|Any Others   I placed an Flat File Source to load these into package, and the configuration of the Connection Manager are as following: FIELD_SAMPLE: Unicode string [DT_WSTR], Length 8   Then I click the "Preview" button and I can see this data in the "Preview" window correctly (with the value "ABC{NUL}DEFG"). But when I tried to run this package, I've got an error that the "ABC{NUL}DEFG" is too long for this field. Then I changed the length to 20 and it was loaded into SSIS package. But I found the value in SSIS package is "ABC", and "{NUL}DEFG" was not there~ I have no ideal why it is ok in Preview but it is not ok when the package running~     Anyway, I hope to load the {NUL} from the flat file into target database. So that is there anybody could give me a hand?

Instance and Default connection properties on SQL Server 2005

We had a sql server fail and I have been having troubles.  I compared the connection properties on the server properties and noticed that multiple default settings are no longer set.  So I'm wondering if during the failure these could have some gotten flipped.  DB's that worked all of a sudden don't work and we had to migrate to a different instance.  I have never changed any of the setings below and wonder what impact they would have if I changed them back to the default of an installed instance? ansi warning is checked ansi padding is checked ANSI NULLS is checked arithmetic abort is checked quoted identified is checked No Count is checked concat null yields null is checked Could anyone tell me how clearing these checked options will impact my db?   -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCITP: Enterprise Administrator MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, Vista, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 http://www.pbbergs.com    Twitter @pbbergs Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

SQL Server Configuration Manager: Connection to target machine could not be made in a timely fashion

I have a SQL Server 2005 box that was moved from a domain environment to a non-domain environment and was never dropped from its original domain before moving over.  Subsequently a new domain was created at the data center this SQL Server box now resides in.  The machine was dropped from its old domain and joined to the new one.   All the while the service accounts were set to the local admin account.  When I tried to start the Configuration Manager I got the message "Connection to target machine could not be made in a timely fashion.".  I read some blog entries and tried changing all the service accounts to Local System and the error message still came up.   All of the SQL Server services run fine.  It is just this management console that I cannot open.  I wasn't with this employer when this box was moved to the data center so I do not know if it worked prior and there isn't anyone here that could give me its history.   Any help would be appreciated.

How do you specify special characters as flat file delimiters?

I have a flat file that has fields delimited by tilde {~} and rows delimited by {CR}{LF}.  The problem is, my source is spitting out the {NULL} (&H00) at the end of the row. The data displays correctly in the pre-viewer (with a non-print symbol at the end of the last field), but gives an error when I try to run the package. Example: "data"~"data"~"data"{NULL}{CR}{LF} I can process the row in c# using: "\0\r\n" as the row delimiter.   What is the equivalent notation for SSIS?   Thanks,

Connect to an existing connection manager from within a custom transformation?

I'm developing a custom data flow transformation and have hit a roadblock.  I need to create an ADO connection to one of the connection managers that's defined in the package already.  I can either hardcode the name of the connection manager, or define it as a custom property....the problem I'm having is accessing it at all.  What I've found is that ComponentMetaData.RuntimeConnectionCollection[0].ConnectionManager only has the connection managers defined by the component itself, not already existing in the package.  How do I create a connection to a connection manager that's defined at the package level at design time? Thanks
