SharePoint 2007 Workflows - Things to Consider Before You Start

SharePoint 2007 (MOSS) utilizes the Workflow Foundation (WF) to enable workflows on lists and content types. But before you start doing cartwheels there are few things you should know before you get started. The experiences I'll be discussing are not from book smarts but from building real MOSS solutions that are in production today.

Workflow "Failed on Start (retrying)" when new item created by BizTalk SharePoint Adapter

We've been using the BizTalk SharePoint Adapter to load various different contents into a MOSS 2007 Document Library. The library has a Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 workflow (sequential workflow created in Designer) which starts automatically when a new item is added to the Document Library. Or, at least, it eventually starts automatically.

For some unknown reason--and this is what we're hoping some of you may have some ideas on--the workflow fails to start on the first try, producing the "Failed to Start (retrying)" message. When the timer job comes back the second time, the workflow starts successfully, but this causes us to loose five minutes of potential work time (not to mention making us look bad to the VPs and CTO because they see the failure message).

In checking the log, I find the following pair of error messages each time the "Failed to Start (retrying)" status occurs:

08/27/2007 13:49:43.24  w3wp.exe (0x0CA0)                        0x1438 Windows SharePoint Services    Workflow Infrastructure        72fs Unexpected RunWorkflow: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: <Error><CompilerError Line="1" Column="1" Text="The root activity type is invalid.&q

SharePoint 2010 Long Starting if start workflow programatically

In SharePoint 2010, I'm starting workflow #2 programatically from my workflow #1. See code below:

					SPList currentList = web.Lists[new Guid(ListId)];
					SPListItem currentListItem = currentList.GetItemById(ListItem);

					//resolve any lookup parameters
					string workflowId = base.ProcessStringField(WorkflowIdentifier);

					//find workflow association by name
					SPWorkflowAssociation workflowAssoc = currentList.WorkflowAssociations.GetAssociationByName(workflowId, Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture);

					if (workflowAssoc != null)
						//start the workflow
						SPWorkflow workflow = site.WorkflowManager.StartWorkflow(currentListItem, workflowAssoc, workflowAssoc.AssociationData, SPWorkflowRunOptions.Synchronous);

And workflow #2  will hang with Starting status (1-10 minutes), Then the workflow #2 status would be modified  to Completed.

I couldn't find how to start the workflow # 2 immediately and complete immediately without several minutes delay

Filter items with a date column with parameters start date and end date on a sharepoint list?

If I have alist with a view that has the columns Title, Status and Status Date and the view has some items. How Can I add a filter with two parameters, start date and end date, to only show records with status date equal to or greater than parameter start date and status date is less than or equal to parameter end date? This is a sharepoint online site and I can't create and deploy custom code, can use SPD though. Do I need to use SPD or is this something I can do in the list settings? Thanks in advance.   Edit: I had a look here http://www.endusersharepoint.com/2009/09/29/sharepoint-date-filter-filtering-a-list-by-greater-than-or-equal-to-date/ but I don't have the Date Filter web part.

How to Hide Start Time and End Time for All Day Event in Sharepoint Calendar DispForm

Hi All, Currently, when I add my Calendar web part to my page it displays the date and time for start and end dates. How can I get my web part to hide the times and only show the start and end date when the All Day event box is checked?

Use Sharepoint Calendar Start Time field in calculated column

I'm trying to limit the calendar view to current week using the Sharepoint defined field Start Time. However, when I display the serial number behind the Start Time it looks like it is actually giving me the serial number for the Created Date field. I believe it is because the appointment is reoccurring but I'm hoping there is a way around it. I created a new testdate field and manually entered the date and set those appointments as all day events however they are not reocurring appointments. The testdate returns the correct serial number however the start time returns an incorrect serial number. SerialNumber1=DATE(YEAR([Start Time]),MONTH([Start Time]),DAY([Start Time])) SerialNumber2=DATE(YEAR([testdate]),MONTH([testdate]),DAY([testdate])) Start Time  SerialNumber1 Testdate  SerialNumber2 8/31/2010 40420 8/31/2010 40421 8/31/2010* 40405    9/1/2010* 40405    9/2/2010* 40405    9/7/2010 40427 9/7/2010 40428 9/13/2010* 40405    9/14/2010 40434 9/14/2010 40435 9/14/2010* 40405    9/15/2010* 40405    *These are reoccurring appointments scheduled as all day events. The others were entered as one time appointments scheduled as all day events.

How to start a workflow programmatically that was created in Sharepoint designer 2010?

Trying to start a workflow from code.  The workflow itself has been created in SPD 2010, which from what I understand, means that there is no assembly until the first time it's ran.  However, when I try to find the association record, that doesnt exist.  Is this becuase the 'code' hasnt been compiled yet?  If so, how can I have sharepoint start the just-in-time compiler for a declarative based workflow, so that can kick it off with in code? tia Rocky SandersRocky Sanders

Brand New to setting up SharePoint web pages need to know how to start

Hi Guys I have been assigned the task of creating a "scripts" web page for our SharePoint environment. Up to now I thought no issue create it in Front Page with all the necessary form fields and load it up into SharePoint.... boy was that a RUDE awakening!!    So, now that I am a little more SharePoint Aware and have attempted to use a Page Viewer Web Part  - I know I need more education.  My Problem like most is that I don't wish to start in some obscure corner of the SharePoint World as I do have to get this project rolled out at some point. My questions will revolve around my project so let me explain what it is supposed to do and perhaps someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction: I have fields on a page that a client will fill in Once filled in from the web page the client clicks submit with the submit the form should be emailed to 2 separate locations A second page should pop up at this point to remind the client to also call it in to be sure.... So to do this should I go on a SharePoint Designer training rampage or would I be better to do Visual Studio training? Or are there other possibilities that I may not even be aware of as yet? (display through Page Viewer Web Part does not seem to be what I need!) Thanks,

How to start/stop SharePoint 2010 Services manually?

I am new to SP 2010.  Recently, I installed SharePoint 2010 on Windows 7 (4GB RAM), which is taking up most of my system RAM and I am unable to run any New Virtual PC within my Host.  I would like to start/stop SharePoint 2010 manually on this PC.

What are the steps (in proper sequence) involved to start/stop all SharePoint 2010 related services manually?

Thanks & Regards,

Cannot Start Workflow - Frozen SharePoint

I started a Publishing portal site (with workflow), and took all the default settings.  After editing the default page (/Pages/Default.aspx), I tried to submit the changes for approval.

This starts the "Parallel Approval" workflow.  When I hit "OK" to start the workflow a status box pops up with "Sending Data to the Server..." and freezes.  Out of curiosity I let it run while I went to lunch and it was still stuck when I got back.

I've tried creating another publishing site, a new web application, a new publishing Site Collection with a publishing subsite, creating a new workflow for approval; anything else I could possibly think of.  However, it still freezes.

It will also freeze if I try to add a name to CC the task to.  I know this isn't an Active Directory issue, since at all other places in the site (as with authenication) it has no trouble using AD.

Does anyone know what the issue is?

Unable to start/stop SharePoint 2010 service

I've developed customs SharePoint 2010 Service based on this tutorial: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dtaylor/archive/tags/calculator+service+example/

My first version inherits from SPIisWebService (and SPIisWebServiceInstance, SPIisWebServiceApplication etc..) - everything worked fine.

Then I redesigned my service to inherits from SPWindowsService (and SPWindowsServiceInstance, SPWindowsServiceApplication etc...). Everything works fine without one thing:) - I'm not able to start or stop Service (neither from PowerShell nor SP Central Admin page). After installed my service, it is started. When I uninstall it and install once again - it's still started.

When I try to stop it (or start on clear SharePoint environment), I've got the following exception (where IntegrationService is the name of my service)

System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: IntegrationService

Sharepoint Designer worflow dont start due to infopath "system account" submission

After lot of search i was able to submit the browser enabled infopath form to sharepoint library as anonymous user using following link

but the form submit as system account, which makes the sharepoint designer workflow not working on the forms library.

so can any body help me in resolving the code to impersonate user in the infopath submit button.

public void CTRL19_5_Clicked(object sender, ClickedEventArgs e)
            string siteStr = "http://sharepointwebapplication/";
            SPSite tempSite = new SPSite(siteStr);

SharePoint Workflow : Failed to Start when a document is added to library from server-side object mo

When I add a document using my server-side object model code, I get an exception "The type or namespace name 'Office' does not exist in the namespace 'Microsoft'" in the server logs and in the library I can see the Workflow status as "Failed to Start".

Interestingly, when I add a document to the same library from sharepoint site portal, it works just fine, the workflow kicks off with the state : in-progress.

Also, I modified the task form for the Approval workflow template from SharePoint Designer using infopath.(Not sure if that be a problem as adding from portal works fine.)

What am I missing out here??

Start with Sharepoint

I like to start learning Sharepoint 2010 development, since I have basic idea of what is  MOSS 2007. But what are the prerequisites before I start developing in SPS 2010? Thanks for your input.
