Workflow failed to start in Room Equipment Reservation Site

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 27, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I created a site using Microsoft's Room and Equipment Reservation template. I created a workflow to send an email to confirm reservation using sharepoint designer. I get the following error on workflow status: workflow failed to start (retrying). The error detail on the log file is:

RunWorkflow: System.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range.     at Microsoft.SharePoint.SPList.GetItemById(Int32 id, String strRootFolder, Boolean cacheRowsetAndId)     at Microsoft.SharePoint.SPList.GetItemById(Int32 id)     at Microsoft.SharePoint.Workflow.SPWorkflowNoCodeSupport.LoadWorkflowBytesElevated(SPWeb web, Guid docLibID, Int32 fileID, Int32 fileVer)     at Microsoft.SharePoint.Workflow.SPWorkflowNoCodeSupport.<>c__DisplayClass2.<LoadWorkflowBytes>b__0()     at Microsoft.SharePoint.SPSecurity.CodeToRunElevatedWrapper(Object state)     at Microsoft.SharePoint.SPSecurity.<>c__DisplayClass4.<RunWithElevatedPrivileges>b__2()&n

Workflow "Failed on Start (retrying)" when new item created by BizTalk SharePoint Adapter

We've been using the BizTalk SharePoint Adapter to load various different contents into a MOSS 2007 Document Library. The library has a Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 workflow (sequential workflow created in Designer) which starts automatically when a new item is added to the Document Library. Or, at least, it eventually starts automatically.

For some unknown reason--and this is what we're hoping some of you may have some ideas on--the workflow fails to start on the first try, producing the "Failed to Start (retrying)" message. When the timer job comes back the second time, the workflow starts successfully, but this causes us to loose five minutes of potential work time (not to mention making us look bad to the VPs and CTO because they see the failure message).

In checking the log, I find the following pair of error messages each time the "Failed to Start (retrying)" status occurs:

08/27/2007 13:49:43.24  w3wp.exe (0x0CA0)                        0x1438 Windows SharePoint Services    Workflow Infrastructure        72fs Unexpected RunWorkflow: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: <Error><CompilerError Line="1" Column="1" Text="The root activity type is invalid.&q

SharePoint Workflow : Failed to Start when a document is added to library from server-side object mo

When I add a document using my server-side object model code, I get an exception "The type or namespace name 'Office' does not exist in the namespace 'Microsoft'" in the server logs and in the library I can see the Workflow status as "Failed to Start".

Interestingly, when I add a document to the same library from sharepoint site portal, it works just fine, the workflow kicks off with the state : in-progress.

Also, I modified the task form for the Approval workflow template from SharePoint Designer using infopath.(Not sure if that be a problem as adding from portal works fine.)

What am I missing out here??

Room and equipment reservation template more than 20 resources

We want to use the room and equipment reservation template in our company.
It worked fine until we created more than 20 resources. When reserving a rescource, starting from the availabilitiy page, the new items dropdown wasn't focussed anymore.
After we deleted resources until 20 remained the focus worked again.
Does anyone know how to solve this, because we need to have more than twenty resources.

Workflow has failed to start due to internal error

Hello everbody,

We have critical issue w.r.t workflows in 3 site collections(Collaboration sites).
When we start a workflow for a document library/document , below error is displayed.

We had deactivated and activated all the related workflow features at site collection level but didn't succeed. This we have also tried using SharePoint Manager 2007 .

Could you please check and help on this issue ?

Thanks in advance.

SharePoint 2010 Workflow "Failed on Start"

I have a list workflow for SP 2010 that was previoulsy working this morning and decided to "Fail on Start" at some point.  I have done nothing to the list or workflow settings, I have just been working in SP Designer 2010 creating the WF.  I have searched high and low and have found all of the same answers that get me no where.  The suggestions include comparing the Workflow.xml and/or feature.xml to the name .dll in the GAC.

I have no workflow.xml or feature .xml files other than what I find in my Visual Studio folders from workflows past.  This time I am not using Visual Studio.  I am using SPD 2010, does it keep those files?  Secondly, I find only one of my workflowname.dll's in the GAC, also from an old VS workflow.  My current workflow.xml, feature.xml and currentworkflow.dll files do not exist on my workstation or server.  WHAT am I missing here??? :-(

North to the Future

Start site workflow using silverlight client object model.

I created a sequensial site workflow using VS2010. Its working fine. I want to start it manually using silverlight client object model.

Can any one help me how it can be done?

Workflow - Failed on Start

All of the workflows within only one site collection are not working.  I get a the following messages in Workflow History:

Workflow Cancelled - System Account - Workflow Name was cancelled by System Account
Error - System Account - Workflow failed to start

Here is what I get in my log: 72fs    Unexpected    RunWorkflow: System.ArgumentException: Item does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user.     at Microsoft.SharePoint.SPList.GetItemById(String strId, Int32 id, String strRootFolder, Boolean cacheRowsetAndId, String strViewFields, Boolean bDatesInUtc)     at

Once again, this occurs on EVERY workflow, no matter how simple or how complex on one site collection with the same web application that other workflows work correctly.  Proper permissions are in place for SPD to add workflows.  (By the way this only effects SPD workflows, no out-of-the-box SP workflows)  I have disabled and reenabled all workflow features, even created a new site collection then copied by site collection over t

Workflow Error - Failed on Start (retrying) - Allow this list to receive e-mail? Yes

I have created a simple discussion board list with NO modifications to the fields or views.  I have turned on the option to allow new items to be created via email (Allow this list to receive e-mail? = yes).  In sharepoint designer I have created a simple workflow that sets a workflow variable (type string) to 'true'.  When I manually create a new discussion board item for this list, the workflow completes successfully; however, when I email in a new discussion board item, the item is created, but the workflow fails with the "Failed on Start (retrying)" workflow status.

The workflow is set to only fire when new items are created.

Room and Equipment Reservation Template - Change Availability Date Calendar

I have customize the availability.aspx page and added some lookup drop-down fields to filter by additional criteria (Resource Type, Room Capacity, Location, Floor, Equipment). As i select from the drop-down it filters the list of available resources and it displays availability by the current date only, I need to see availability by the day, week and month from this screen. How do I change the display view?

Trying to trigger workflow for Survey got error" Failed to Start(retrying)"

I created an survey for the department i am working for. I did that at sharepoint designer 2007, then i created workflow and attached that with the survey page, i added conditions and actions when workflow is started upon item is created. But it throws me an error saying" Failed to Start(retrying)".

I dont know what going on , I saw in ablog saying windows sharepoint services 3.0 doesnt support attaching workflow into surveys. I dont know what else can be done to make this possible.

Can you please give me some advices, i am new on this field.

Thank You

ASP.NET: Jump Start Your Web Site Development with the ASP.NET Starter Kits

If you're building an ASP.NET Web site you could probably use a good, solid code foundation to start with and build upon. Wouldn't it be nice to start with a complete site, make a few tweaks and customizations, and go live? The ASP.NET Starter Kits are packaged solutions that let you do just that. The five kits-Community, Reports, Commerce, Portal, and Time Tracker-supply full, reusable code that can be easily customized. In addition, there are a number of ISPs that support automatic deployment of ASP.NET Starter Kit Web sites, leaving you with little left to do when you have to get there fast. Here, the author introduces the ASP.NET Starter Kits and builds a community Web site with lots of advanced features such as ratings, user polls, upload quotas, change notifications, and themes.

Attach Workflow to Task List, don't get option to manually start workflow via dropdown on task item

I am running WSS 3.0 with other workflows which are functioning correctly.  I created a new workflow in Visual Studio 2008 and was able to successfully run it in my dev environment.  I attached the workflow to a task list in my dev environment and was able to manually start the workflow by using the drop down workflow option and using the menus to manually start it.  I installed this workflow in our production environment and attached it to the task list (which had a SPD workflow attached to it which stopped working about a month ago).  I made sure that the option to manually start the workflow was checked.  When I tried to manually start the workflow, (hover mouse over title, drop down) there isn’t a workflow option.  The workflow also will not start automatically when a task is changed.

I attached this same workflow to a different task list in production and get the option to start it.

I have tried creating a small workflow in SPD 2007 and attaching it to the task list.  It shows that it is attached, when I look at the workflows that are attached to the task list, but I still don’t get the option to manually start it.

I have checked my security and I have fu
