Master pages in ASP.NET 2.0 solve a problem many Web developers have been solving on their own with a variety of techniques for years - providing a single master template for an entire site. This article covers the details of master pages, discussing their usage and implementation and how they are a natural evolution of custom techniques developers are using today.

I'm getting an error page when trying to reach Page Layouts and Templates page from site settings on one of the sites in our collection.ÃÂ When the user clicks on Site Settings -> Modify all site settings -> Page Layouts and Site Templates an error page is displayed with the message: Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1.ÃÂ I've checked Event Viewer on the server and found no errors for this issue.ÃÂ I'm very new to SharePoint Admin and I'm not sure why this would happen.ÃÂ I'm including an exerpt from the log file below.ÃÂ Does anyone have any ideas for me?ÃÂ

I am new to web site templates, and I know that templates are the base for the creation of web pages.
I have the task of testing hundreds of web pages from a web site.
If a web site (For example, www.microsoft.com) has 1000 web pages, how can I know what are the different templates used to design these 1000 web pages?
The idea is, the test cycle time can be reduced and the reliability on coverage can be more by testing these templates.
Once I know the templates, how should they be tested?
Can anyone please help me know answer to my question?
I googled to check solution to my question and found that, there are many articles on the net which explains how to create web pages from a template. But, my problem is, how do I know what templates are used to create hundreds of web pages in an existing web
site (say, www.microsoft.com)
Also, can you please let me know if there are any links relevant to this so that, i can read through it to understand this better?
A trainer is explaining to me that during a class activity many newly created sites are defaulting to collaboration mode. In these specific instances no collaboration templates are even available. One thing to mention is that this only seems to happen when
the class sizes are larger and possibly only happens when multiple students are creating sites at the same time. Is there a limitation in the system surrounding creation of sites in the same container at the same time?

I was used to creating a web app anytime and I would get a default page for starters and be happy. But today I find that when I pick either the ASP.NET Web Site or ASP.NET Web Application templates I get site.master and a bunch of site admin files that I don't want. Alternately when I select the empty versions of those templates, I get almost nothing at all. An almost empty web.config page and no Default.aspx page. There is nothing magical about having a default.aspx page in place, but it is an indicator of a change when I can only get a virtually completely empty website or a website with a bunch of bells and whistles I don't want.
Also, for some reason, when I create a new app or website as just noted, in the Solution Explorer I get aspx.designer.cs files showing as well as web.config files for both debug and release.
Somehow some settings and templates must have changed, or am I missing something here? How can I get my settings/templates to go back to the way they were?
I have a new SP2010 site that uses managed metadata. There are multiple 1st level sub sites that contain doc libraries, doc centers, etc using site columns with the metadata. I am wanting to package up these sub sites as site templates. Each sub site will
be it's own package.
My questions relate to how the new managed metadata fits in. Can I create a package that will deploy the managed metadata on an enterprise level to the other sites? I have dev, stage, and prod environments and what I am trying to do is create packages to
deploy across all 3. Is there a way to package the metadata in this fashion so that when I create my stage and prod environments I can deploy the metadata without having to re-create it manually?
Then once the metadata is configured in stage and prod, I plan on using the new visual studio import solution package template to create site templates for each sub site and deploy that package to stage and prod. Anyone have any tips, tricks, possible road
blocks, or suggestions with this approach?
My central sites Site Administration - site actions > Site settings > Galleries only has Master pages, Site content types, Site columns, List templates
and Web Parts. "Site Templates" is missing and I believe a user deleted the web part yet it is not in the recycle bin. My question is how do I restore it ?
please guide me to deploy a Site template as wsp .
thanks in advacne
I created several version of site templates with different name. Next I removed the older versions in solution gallery but in the list of template sites still are showed.
I searched for cmdlet in PowerShell witho no luck. The custom templates does not shown in SP-WebTemplate command. So I don´t know how to remove this templates from SharePoint, if the gallery solution is empty. I remove the solutions
from recycle bin in the site and site colleciton scope but with the same results. And I first deactivate the solution and next remove the solution but nothing works to remove the template from site template.
The odd thing is that in my SharePoint 2010 development Virtual Machine removing the solutions remove the site templates of the creation site option. But in the Production Server recently migrate to 2010 it does not work.
Any solution in code, cmdlet or some else could help.
Thanks in advance!
