Master Pages: Master Your Site Design with Visual Inheritance and Page Templates

Master pages in ASP.NET 2.0 solve a problem many Web developers have been solving on their own with a variety of techniques for years - providing a single master template for an entire site. This article covers the details of master pages, discussing their usage and implementation and how they are a natural evolution of custom techniques developers are using today.

ASP.NET Web Site Templates

I need to redo a web site, and I'd like to start with a fancy template that's asp.net based.  There are tons of web site templates out there, but I'm not finding any that are focused on asp.net developers.  I've purchased an html/.css template, but it's a pain to integrate it into a web site in VS 2010.  I'd gladly pay $100 for a pre-built project.  Does any one know of a site offering such templates?

SharePoint 2010 - noticed a possible bug with regard to custom site templates.

Hi All, I'm wondering has anyone else noticed this behaviour in relation to custom site templates. I wanted to move an site A ( content included ) from site collection A to site collection B. I saved site A as a site template ( content included ) I uploaded the site template to site collection B's solution gallery. I created Site B on site collection B using this site template. unfortunately the top links to site A have been preserved causing major confusion to the users. i.e. the shared documents document library link and the tasks link both link to Site A! the links to documents within the document library on the other hand are to site B!? Is this a known issue ? Is this something that I should have expected to happen? look forward to hearing other folks experience with this functionality. thanks and regards, Counie

Best Way to Convert MOSS 2007 Site Templates to SharePoint 2010 Templates

Ok, I just treid to do something that I didn't really think would work, but now that I've seen it fail, I get to ask the question. Is there a best practice on converting site templates built for MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010. We have several projects that used the Visual Studio Extensions (v1.3) and the SharePoint Solution Generator to build custom site templates and the .wsp packages. I can add and deploy the solution packages using the STSADM tool, but when I try to create a sub-site based on that template, I get an Object Not Set to an Oject Reference Error. In case anyone is wondering, it works fine in MOSS 2007. I have not tried Visual Studio 2010 yet (it's downloading in the background). I'm just wondering if anyone has run into this and what they did to fix it. TIA, John.

Site templates and Library Labels

I have been having an issue with labels and a document library... I have a created a document library...docs, with a new site content type ...doc1 If I then save site as a template....works fine. However, the template I have for the content type doc1, has a Quick Part (label) added to it to show the document version number on the document. In order for this to pass from the library to the document, I need to activate labels on the list through the Information Management policy settings on the library. I have done this  and got the template working correctly, updating the version number within the document. But, now if I save site as a template I get the error...   Error Error exporting the list named "Docs" at the URL: Docs Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation. Correlation ID: ea226ba4-0a68-4cfb-9b6f-c557f4ec8ab6 I have tried saving the template at every stage and it is fine up until I turn on the Label option. Any ideas?

Types of site templates

There are a number of articles around that list the different types of site template available in Sharepoint 2010. Some of the templates that appear in these lists do not appear as options when you go to create a new site. SPSNEWS#0 for example. Are these templates that should no longer be used?

Applying site templates fails

Hi, I MOSS 2007 we have created several site templates - all based on 'team site template' and ONLY customized using the browser. All ‘source sites’ are kept in one web app. We have 1)      Migrated this web app to SP 2010 2)      Saved the sites as ‘site templates’ resulting in .wsp-files 3)      Created a site collection WITHOUT reference to a site template 4)      Connected to the  site coll – ‘choose template dialog’ shows up 5)      Added/activated solution (.wsp-file) to the site coll 6)      Tried to apply the custom site template – results in the following error message: ”Filen blev ikke fundet. (File Not found) Fejlfinding af problemer med Microsoft SharePoint Foundation. Korrelations-id: 333faed9-fe3e-4c46-aa4d-2d40fb162c01 Dato og klokkeslæt: 10-09-2010 11:02:24 ” Tracing using the correlation-id exposes a lot of data – too much to insert here – but this extract might be important: “Area     : SharePoint Foundation Category : General Level    : High EventID  : 8l36 Message  : Failed to activate site-scoped features for template 'STS#0' in site 'http://skabelon2010.xxx.xxx.xx/site

Disable site templates via powershell?

I'm looking to disable certain site templates available to users via the "create site" menu and would like to just do it for one entire web application, but not the whole farm. Is there a way to do this via powershell? (It honestly baffles me that this still isn't a UI control via central admin)

Site Settings - Page Layouts and Templates Error

I'm getting an error page when trying to reach Page Layouts and Templates page from site settings on one of the sites in our collection.  When the user clicks on Site Settings -> Modify all site settings -> Page Layouts and Site Templates an error page is displayed with the message: Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1.  I've checked Event Viewer on the server and found no errors for this issue.  I'm very new to SharePoint Admin and I'm not sure why this would happen.  I'm including an exerpt from the log file below.  Does anyone have any ideas for me?

How to find and test templates of a web site?

I am new to web site templates, and I know that templates are the base for the creation of web pages.

I have the task of testing hundreds of web pages from a web site.

If a web site (For example, www.microsoft.com) has 1000 web pages, how can I know what are the different templates used to design these 1000 web pages?

The idea is, the test cycle time can be reduced and the reliability on coverage can be more by testing these templates.

Once I know the templates, how should they be tested?

Can anyone please help me know answer to my question?

I googled to check solution to my question and found that, there are many articles on the net which explains how to create web pages from a template. But, my problem is, how do I know what templates are used to create hundreds of web pages in an existing web site (say, www.microsoft.com)

Also, can you please let me know if there are any links relevant to this so that, i can read through it to understand this better?

regards, Krishna

New site creations defaulting to Collaboration mode when collaboration templates are not available

A trainer is explaining to me that during a class activity many newly created sites are defaulting to collaboration mode. In these specific instances no collaboration templates are even available. One thing to mention is that this only seems to happen when the class sizes are larger and possibly only happens when multiple students are creating sites at the same time. Is there a limitation in the system surrounding creation of sites in the same container at the same time?

Web Site/ Web Application templates seem changed; give me default.aspx only with site.master in VWD

Using Visual Web Developer 2010 Express

I was used to creating a web app anytime and I would get a default page for starters and be happy.  But today I find that when I pick either the ASP.NET Web Site or ASP.NET Web Application templates I get site.master and a bunch of site admin files that I don't want.  Alternately when I select the empty versions of those templates, I get almost nothing at all.  An almost empty web.config page and no Default.aspx page.  There is nothing magical about having a default.aspx page in place, but it is an indicator of a change when I can only get a virtually completely empty website or a website with a bunch of bells and whistles I don't want.

Also, for some reason, when I create a new app or website as just noted, in the Solution Explorer I get aspx.designer.cs files showing as well as web.config files for both debug and release.

Somehow some settings and templates must have changed, or am I missing something here?  How can I get my settings/templates to go back to the way they were?

Managed Metadata and Site Templates/Solution Packages

I have a new SP2010 site that uses managed metadata. There are multiple 1st level sub sites that contain doc libraries, doc centers, etc using site columns with the metadata. I am wanting to package up these sub sites as site templates. Each sub site will be it's own package.

My questions relate to how the new managed metadata fits in. Can I create a package that will deploy the managed metadata on an enterprise level to the other sites? I have dev, stage, and prod environments and what I am trying to do is create packages to deploy across all 3. Is there a way to package the metadata in this fashion so that when I create my stage and prod environments I can deploy the metadata without having to re-create it manually?

Then once the metadata is configured in stage and prod, I plan on using the new visual studio import solution package template to create site templates for each sub site and deploy that package to stage and prod. Anyone have any tips, tricks, possible road blocks, or suggestions with this approach?

Deleted Site Templates Webpart

My central sites Site Administration - site actions > Site settings > Galleries only has Master pages, Site content types, Site columns, List templates and Web Parts. "Site Templates" is missing and I believe a user deleted the web part yet it is not in the recycle bin. My question is how do I restore it ?

Using List templates - saved template has no site definition id or feature id - does not appear in S

I have a Record Centre site in SharePoint Server 2010 and have created a number of record libraries. Due to a reorganisation, I need to split my main record library up into about 20 separate libraries, so decided to use the list template as a means to create the new libraries with the same content types, views and workflows.

Used one of my libraries with no content and did Library Settings - Save document library as template and gave a name. Seemed to save OK to the List template gallery.

When I go to Site Actions - More Options the new template does not appear

Have done a fair bit of searching and I think the problem is that the .stp does not seem to have any site definition id and no means to add one.

Have enabled the SharePoint Server Publishing feature at the site level, as suggested by another post, but still has not resolved the problem.

Would value any ideas or insight. Thanks

how to delete custom site templates(solutions) still shows afert remove the solution in SharePoint 2

I created several version of site templates with different name.  Next I removed the older versions in solution gallery but in the list of template sites still  are showed.

I searched for cmdlet in PowerShell witho no luck.  The custom templates does not shown in SP-WebTemplate command.  So I don´t know how to remove this templates from SharePoint, if the gallery solution is empty.  I remove the solutions from recycle bin in the site and site colleciton scope but with the same results.  And I first deactivate the solution and next remove the solution but nothing works to remove the template from site template.

The odd thing is that in my SharePoint 2010 development Virtual Machine removing the solutions remove the site templates of the creation site option. But in  the Production Server recently migrate to 2010 it does not work.

Any solution in code, cmdlet or some else could help.

Thanks in advance!
