How to realize chat between exactly two visitors

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 25, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

Dear folks,

I want to realize the following with AJAX and .NET, but I don't know the best way to do it.

Person A comes to the website, clicks a button 'I want to chat'. Then Person B comes and he should see a list where he can choose 'chat with A'.

I have two questions:

- What is the best way to address B's message to A? After B has sent his message to the server, how does the message get to A?

- Is it possible to invoke a "update-chat" function for A when a message for him arrives? (Of course, A's browser could ask the server 'do you have a message for me?' every second, but this seems not a good solution.)

Thank you in advance!

While you may well be excited about the prospect of building managed smart tags, there is little information available to help you create them using .NET. In this article the author fills in the blanks. Along the way he discusses the Microsoft Office Smart Tag List XML schema, advanced managed smart tags for Office 2003 and Office XP, and deploying these features in an organization.

"Unplugged" online chat with me this Wednesday

I just got back from my trip to India and the UK last week - and will be returning to more regular blogging shortly.  This Wednesday (August 18th) I'm going to be doing another online LIDNUG chat session .  The chat will be from 10:00am to 11:30am Pacific Time.  I do these chats a few times a year and they tend to be pretty good.  Attendees can submit any questions they want to me, and listen to me answer them live via LiveMeeting.  You can learn more about it here and join the chat and ask questions at the appropriate time with this link . Hope to get a chance to chat with some of you there! Scott P.S. In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com...(read more)

Peer to peer chat

Hi,   Are there any examples which illustrate how to perform a simple peer to peer chat program? Basically, all I need is for 2 PCs to be able to send texts to each other. I don't even need any displaying, no acknowledgement needed. All the examples I found are client-server chat room style programs, or WCF peer to peer. Are there any windows form examples? Example: PC-A sends PC-B "Hello". PC-B receives it and processes it (eg. write it into a text file) PC-B sends PC-A "Hi". PC-A does the same thing to process it.

Peer to peer voice chat

Hi, Does anyone know of any voice chat windows forms examples, that works with windows 7? I have found several examples, which uses TAPI3, and h323, but unfortunately they are all not supported in windows 7. (Or if anyone knows how to get those to work with win 7, that'll be great) Here's an example of what I tried that works perfectly in XP environment but not 7: http://www.socketcoder.com/ArticleFile.aspx?index=2&ArticleID=39 I have enabled Telephony services, but still it doesn't work. I don't really want to reinvent the wheel here, so if anyone knows of any SDKs, or examples with source code that is compatible with win 7, please post them here! I have seen some vendors like conaito, which employs client-server architecture. It's way too comprehensive for me. Just a simple peer to peer will do. Any ideas, anyone?

Setting sql permissions for web site visitors

Hi all, I have my SqlServer 2005 database at a web host. I recently figured out how to set permissions for the stored procedures (see this link if you face the same problem: http://forums.asp.net/t/1600637.aspx) . Now I wonder: What permissions should I give the web site's visitors? In a stored procedure's Properties window, I have three availabale users, the db owner (the db name), "guest" and "public". My bet is on public.  As far as permission types go, I hev the following available: Alter, Control, Execute, Take Ownership, and View Definition. My guess is that the one of interest is Execute, correct?   In other words, should I set all stored procedures to Execute for public (not that I seem to have the permission to do that myself - I get an error message when I try to alter them)? If so, could I ask the web host to set them globally for me? Or should I only set stored procedure using UPDATE/INSERT/DELETE to Execute?   Thanks a lot for any replies, Pettrer
