Maximum number of items in a SharePoint 2010 list

Hi, Is there a recommended maximum number of items that can go into a SharePoint 2010 list? I seem to recall that earlier versions seemed to have performance problems with more than 2000 items. I have a table that has some 50,000 records and would love to convert it into a list.   Thanks John JohnSpilker

Currency and number column error with office 2007 document formats in SharePoint 2010 library

Hi there,

The following error occurred within a SharePoint 2010 document library:

As I tried to test out the new SharePoint 2010 environment I changed the metadata from a few documents within a document library. I noticed that the data from the currency und number field was incorrect from a few documents. The numbers looked like that the decimal separator were ignored. For an example: 123.456,78 was saved as 12.345.678.

At first I thought it could be a language incompabilty but if that would be the case: Why would there be other documents which show the correct number?

I created another document library to recreate this error. And there I noticed the real reason: Every time I changed these fields from a document which was saved in the office 2007 format the error occurred. The metadata from the documents in the office 2003 format were correct.

Has anyone a similar problem or got an idea how to solve this problem?

Sharepoint List in a Repeating table

I have a view with a Sharepoint List showing in a repeating table. I have conditional formatting to hide items that should not show based on Line Total.

Line Total = 4

Approver    Min Amount        Max Amount
Jim                      3                  9
Jack                    1                   7
Sally                   2                    5

Based on this, I need to sort the Approvers based on Max Amount and send an email to them in order of the sort.  Is this possible?

Creating a column in the List using SharePoint 2010

It is possible to create a column in a List in SharePoint by the following ways.

1.Creating a column directly in the server  2.Creating it by using Object Model  (While creating a list in the sharepoint, webservices for the list will create the list. In the same way upon addition of columns, fileds, updation, deletion will be handled by webservices)

Is there any other way creating column by using XML or any method which will be called to create a column in the list without calling webservices or using Object model?

How exactly does a SharePoint 2010 External Content type / list work?

I'm trying BCS on an SQL table which contains about 300,000 rows. Following is what I've observed:

1. A "SELECT * FROM <TABLE>" query fired on the SQL Table using SQL Management Studio returns all the result in 12 seconds
2. The same data when accessed by browsing the default view of external list (to which an External Content Type (ECT) built over the same SQL table in SharePOint Designer 2010 is attached) takes about 3:14 minutes

If I edit the ECT (using SharePoint Designer) and set limit as 100,000, it takes about 49 seconds to load, and further reduction in limit reduces the time to load.

My questions are:

1. What is it that causes so much delay in accessing the rows, as SQL delivers them in 12 seconds? Can anyone please help me understand the BCS / ECT architecture- how it accesses data, etc.
2. Can I implement paging in ECTs created using SharePoint Designer 2010?

Any help shall highly be appreciated. Thans in advance!

Default Value for 'Person or Group' column in a Sharepoint 2010 Custom List

In Sharepoint 2010 I have a Custom List with a column of the type 'Person or Group'.
I would like to have a default name for this 'Person or group' column.
So when a user creates a new list entry and leves the 'Person or Group' column value blank the list entry should be created with the default value für the 'Person or Group' column.

Is there a way to schieve this?

Many thanks in advance.

SharePoint 2010 - Column Validation (List Level) User Message Missing

I first saw this issue being discussed in January 2010 here, but there has not been any response in some time.

What basically happens is when you set column validation for the list level (not per column) the message that alerts the user that the column does not meet the validation requirements is completely missing.   Both the default message or a custom message do not show up.

Does anyone know if there is a hotfix for this issue yet?  I would expect more than a year later there would be one, but if so I can't seem to find it.  I would really like to correct this issue as column validation is a nice enhancement over SharePoint 2007.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Creating SharePoint Server 2010 External Content Type Associations with SharePoint Designer 2010

Learn how to use Business Connectivity Services (BCS) to create associations between external content types in SharePoint Designer 2010 without using code.

Quick Note: Create Custom List Definitions in SharePoint 2010

In this exercise, you create a custom list definition in Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and then create an event receiver that is triggered when the list is used.

The SharePoint lookup field allows you to connect an identifier of one list and to display a different, friendlier field - such as name - for users to select. SharePoint 2010 adds the ability to create additional columns that display other fields from another list. (Length: 10:46)

Video: Large List Support in SharePoint 2010

SharePoint 2010 has support for very large lists of up to 50 million items. With this expanded list size comes the ability to throttle and control how much data is returned to the user and prevent large queries from compromising the SharePoint farm. (Length: 15:36)

SharePoint supports the ability to create Excel-like field validation formulas to validate field data in a list, which greatly reduces the amount of custom code that a developer must create and deploy. (Length: 1:44)
