Specs for a small Sharepoint 2010 farm on a Hyper V virtual server

I want to build a small Sharepoint Farm on a hyper v Windows Server 2008 R2 OS.

I want to have the following instances. An App server (with indexing and query) and an SQL server.

I need to scope out a server which will accommodate this development environment and ultimately scale out to include additional virtual instances.

What would the minimum memory and CPU requirements be?

Moving Sharepoint 2007 from Virtual Server 2005 to Hyper-V

I'm a little unsure of the exact sequence to move my Sharepoint 2007 Virtual server from VS2005 to Hyper-V.  In my enviroment, my sharepoint machine and SQL machine are on 2 different boxes.  SQL 2005 is on Hyper-V and Sharepoint is on Virtual Server 2005.  Do I shutdown the SQL VM before I move Sharepoint???   Will the new VM and SQL sync back up without any help??

Also, what happens to the SQL database if the new Sharepoint VM (on Hyper-V) has issues or problems??  Does that make my SQL server

out of sync with my old Sharepoint VM???  I have done multiple moves between VS2005 and Hyper-V so I really familiar with the process.

I usually keep the old VM around for a while after moving just in case there is a problem.   I can always blow away the new VM and crank up the old.   Viola!  I'm back to square one.

Any ideas??

Connecting to network server

I use Sql connectivity in my Sql Servers. I've got a small network. Each machine has its own Sql Server which I found inconvenient. At least for one of the computers I want it to connect to the Sql Server on another machine thru network connection which always works fine. How can I do it?

An additional requirement, if I may, would be to connect to the other Sql Server for just one database only. So, I want the intranetwork connection to be selective. Is it possible?

Thank you.

    <add name="OESConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLServer2005;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\OES_Data.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

And i am using websecurity helper as well and the setup is as follows.

WebSecurity.InitializeDatabaseConnection("Data Source=INLTE5556\\SQLServer2005;Initial Catalog=OES;Integrated Security=True", "System.Data.SqlClient", "UserProfile", "UserId", "Email", true);

When i am trying to insert the user details into database i am getting the below error.

Test Run: Configuration Testing With Virtual Server, Part 2

Because Virtual Server is built upon a set of COM modules, you can automate the creation and testing of virtual machines. Here we use Windows PowerShell to run the tests.

Virtual Server 2005: Program Customized Testing Environments Without Trashing Your Machine

Efficient testing can require many different machine and server configurations but the effort needed to manage these test environments can take a toll. Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 simplifies the provisioning and management of testing environments. This article demonstrates how the extensive Virtual Server COM API can be used to create an automated application testing environment to make your testing chores a whole lot easier.

SQL Server Network Interfaces Error 26 - while failing over SQL Server 2008 R2

Before I explain the issue I am facing, I would like to say that I did read the post at  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2007/05/13/sql-network-interfaces-error-26-error-locating-server-instance-specified.aspx but in my case the problem is transient (lasts for approximately two minutes after a failover) so items 1-3 in the list of troubleshooting steps do not seem to make sense. As to 4 and 5, the named instances use non-default ports (2433 and 3433 respectively), so I do not know how to tailor the PortQry command for that. I tried  portqry.exe -n ServerA,2433-p UDP -e 1434 and  portqry.exe -n ServerA,2433 -p UDP -e 2434 and it failed both times with a "Failed to resolve name to IP address" while the server was up and serving database requests The same thing happened when I tried it with the failover server as well. ***The issue I am facing*** I am using Enterprise Library 4.1 to connect to a SQL Server 2008 R2 database with a mirror. My connection string itself is as below (with dummy values for all fields): "Data Source=ServerA;Failover Partner=ServerB;Initial Catalog=DBName;User ID=uid;Password=pwd;Connect Timeout=5" Sample .NET code is as below (with modifications to instantiate all variables locally to provide context): SqlDatabase db = new SqlDatabase(ConnectionString); SqlConnection cn = (SqlConnection)db

SQL Server doesn't exist or access denied while connecting with Access 2010 ODBC

Hello all. I am using Access 2010 and SQL Server 2008 (locally). I can easily connect to server using SSMS and it works excellent. But when I want to import a table to Access 2010 using ODBC, it says that "SQL Server doesn't exist or access denied". It worked previously - almost 3 days ago, but now, it doesn't! Please help! SQL Server Express 2008 Setup fails. Support Rule "Restart Computer" Failed

Hi, I have been trying to install SQL Server Express for most of the day now without any luck.  Whatever I do setup fails at the stage of Setup Support Rules, Rule "Restart Computer" - Failed.  Needles to say I have restarted (several times!) and I have tried downloading  and installing the "Advanced", "Tools" and "Basic" versions, all give the same error.  Trying a repair does the same.  I have been searching the net for an answer without success, any help would be MUCH appreciated. Further info: I am trying to install a stand-alone installation on to a single PC running under XP SP 3 with .NET 3.5 SP1 installed.  The PC did have some earler versions of SQL server installed but I (?hopefully?) removed all of these through Control Panel.  Before trying the first SQL install I installed Windows installer 4.5 and PowerShell 1.0 as per the Microsoft Instructions. Running SQL Server Configuration Manager results in an error (MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap in might not have been installed correctly).  A directory structure for SQL server exists in "Program Files".  Services MSC shows SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) as Automatic Statup (not running).  Trying to start this manually gives error 14001: "application configuration incorrect - re-install to fix" .......... Which is precisely what I'm trying to do.........:(

Problem connecting to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express from Access 2007

I have a problem with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with MS Access 2007. I am running Windows 7 with 8 gigs memory. I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. Do I now need to install SP1 because I am running with Windows 7? I can open SQL Server using the Management Screen but I cannot connect to MS Access 2007 using SQL Server Express as the database. When trying to connect to SQL Server from Access 2007, I keep getting the message that SQL Server 2005 cannot be found. It will not allow me to sign onto sql server 2008 stating that it cannot be found. Do I have to now run the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP1? Is there an upgrade to MS Access 2007 which will allow me to use SQL Server 2008 R2 Express?

Detect other versions of SQL Server, or SQL server instances on a computer

Hi All, I want to detect other versions of SQL Server, or SQL server instances on a computer. I used the recommended Microsoft C# example by using the SQL Server Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) provider. http://msdn.microsoft.com/he-il/library/dd981032(en-us,SQL.100).aspx SQL server 2005 has been correctly identified on my PC with Windows 7 64 bit OS. Then I uninstalled the SQLserver and all its tools/components. But even after uninstall the utility detects the SQL server 2005 as if it was not removed. What is an alternative for the correct detection of the SQL server installed on PC? Thanks in advance Dmitry
