Adding an SP 2010 server to an existing farm. "Failed to connect to the configuration database." dur

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 25, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I have an existing sp 2010 enterprise server hosting websites and central administration.  I have a seperate sql 2008 r2 server holding the databases.  My goal is to setup another sp 2010 enterprise server to provide redundancy for the websites and central admin.  I believe I am able to accomplish this by adding another web front end to the farm.  On the second server, I install sp 2010, run the config wizard and connect to the config database located on the sql server, however, I am interrupted at step 3 when I am notified of the following:

Failed to connect to the configuration database.
An exception of type System.InvalidOperationException was thrown.  Additional exception information: There was an error encrypting or decrypting credentials. Either a credential update is currently being performed, or you must update the farm account credentials on this server before you can perform this task.

Failed to change Farm Account in Sharepoint 2010 server, now Central Administration is not accessibl

Hello, I have a problem, that I no longer can access Central Administration Website, only the Sharepoint itself. I was running installation of Sharepoint 2010 Server with administrative account ImTheAdmin, who is a Domain Admin in the domain on one of the Windows 2008 R2 member servers. Besides that, I made ImTheAdmin the primary administrator of the Sharepoint. ImTheAdmin became the only user of this Sharepoint 2010 server after installation.  I installed everything on one box with default installation settings. I used builtin SQL server, not Standard or Enterprise. What then happened is: Using ImTheAdmin account, I opened Central Administration Website, and it said, that I need to change the Farm Account, for the account for Farm was the default one (I think it was network service). So I created a regular domain user MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccount. The account name was too long to be as a Windows 2000 name, so it showed there without last 't', e.g. MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccoun. I thought, Windows 2000 is long gone, so I didn't pay much attention, I think everywhere the account SID is important. I don't know if that is the real problem with my failure later, but it might be one of the reasons. I put MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccount down in to the form of Central Administration Website, added the check mark, that it would react to password changes, and pre

Cannot Add Second FE Server to SharePoint 2010 Farm

Hi folks Well I thought I would add my problem to the others that are also experiencing this issue. I actually reported somthing similar to this forum in Feb 2010 when I was trying the beta version out. I upgraded our WSS farm to SPFS 2010, the upgrade worked, well kinda. Basically our second WFE server would not join the farm after installing the 2010 binaries and runnng the configuration tool and it was complaining with the following error: 07/31/2010 14:35:59  11  INF                              Calling SPFarm.Local and SPServer.Local to get the local farm objects 07/31/2010 14:35:59  11  INF                              SPFarm.Local returned null.  This usually means that the server is not joined.  But, you can delete a server from the configdb without unjoining, which would mean that this machine still thinks it is joined. 07/31/2010 14:35:59  11  INF                              Trying to access th

Does the "F5 experience" work with a multi-server 2010 farm?

I have a multi-server SharePoint 2010 farm I'm attempting to develop against.  I have Visual Studio 2010 installed on one of the servers.  When I create a default Visual Web Part project and hit F5, I get an error such as the following:   "Error 1 Error occurred in deployment step 'Activate Features': Feature with Id '06789185-b4a0-41d8-a535-1d8602a05b97' is not installed in this farm, and cannot be added to this scope."   After a bit of searching, I came across a thread that suggested multi-server farms were not supported by Visual Studio 2010 in regards to the F5 experience of being able to deploy, activate, and debug a feature.  Can anyone shed light on this for me?Chris Stewart

Scaling Single Server Farm by adding a seperate Database server

Hi, Right now, I am having a sinle server farm SharePoint 2010 installation. Now I need to seperate out the SQL server from the same box and want to move it to the new SQL server. In short , I need to have a seperate SQL server in my current farm (which is single server farm installtion). Can some one point me to the steps for the same ? Thanks.

SharePoint 2010 - The license state for the current server doesn't match the farm's license state.

I already have a SharePoint 2010 server built, up and running. Yesterday I built a brand new server Windows 2008 and installed all necessary windows updates. Then I joined the server to the domain where the other SharePoint 2010 box is. Today, I installed all necessary pre-requisites for SharePoint 2010 including the KB971831. After that I installed SharePoint 2010 binaries on the new server. When I run the configuration wizard now, it sees the database server with the configuration database, but will not allow me to join the new server to the farm. I get the following error in the diagnostic logs. Resource retrieved id ConfigurationDatabaseTaskConnectFailConfigDisplayLabel is Failed to connect to the configuration database. 02/18/2010 17:54:12 8 INF Leaving function StringResourceManager.GetResourceString 02/18/2010 17:54:12 8 ERR Failed to connect to the configuration database.   An exception of type System.InvalidOperationException was thrown. Additional exception information: The current server cannot be joined to this farm because the set of installed products does not match the products installed in the farm.   The license state for the current server doesn't match the farm's license state. System.InvalidOperationException: The current server cannot be joined to this farm because the set of installed products does not match the products installed in the farm.

SharePoint 2010 WFE Page Not Opening in a 5 Server SP Farm

I have a 5 Server SharePoint 2010 Farm - 2 NLB, 1 Index, 2 Node SQL 2k8 R2 Cluster.
I completed the installation of this and finally when I hit the http://intranet:555 (Intranet being the NLB name) from outside the servers (from a client machine), I got a 404 error. Within the Index Server where the Central Administration is hosted, the URL is opening fine. Withint the 2 NLB machines, the URL shows me a login entry box, but even if you give the right ServiceFarm credentials, it does not open the site, it infact just gives me a blank page (no 404 or access denied page). What do you think I should be done?

Specs for a small Sharepoint 2010 farm on a Hyper V virtual server

I want to build a small Sharepoint Farm on a hyper v Windows Server 2008 R2 OS.

I want to have the following instances. An App server (with indexing and query) and an SQL server.

I need to scope out a server which will accommodate this development environment and ultimately scale out to include additional virtual instances.

What would the minimum memory and CPU requirements be?

how to deploy to server farm from visual studio 2010?

Server farm config is 4 servers: 2 wfe,1 app, 1 db.  NLB on WFE's.

Deploy from VS 2010 to http://myspapp or http://myspsite I get this error in visual studio.

Error 2 Error occurred in deployment step 'Recycle IIS Application Pool': Cannot connect to the SharePoint site: http://myspapp/. Make sure that this is a valid URL and the SharePoint site is running on the local computer. If you moved this project to a new computer or if the URL of the SharePoint site has changed since you created the project, update the Site URL property of the project.

On my dev machine deploy works fine.  Is it possible to deploy to a server farm from visual studio 2010 or do I have to use powershell commands?

Adding server to a farm

Good day,

I want to add a new server to my existing MOSS 2007 farm. I've followed some of the articles on how to do it. Installed it as complete. When the wizard started I gave the remote server (Sql2005). Now curiously, it came back with 3 databases that seemed random. This is test environment so the db I chose was WSS_Content_Test, wich is what the current wss runs on. After picking that db the domain account was filed in the account field. The account is a domain account called xxxxSharePoint. I used this account to installed the whole thing, it is an administrator account that has also db admin rights including db create, db read, etc.

So when the wizard started I gave it the database, this domain account and password, selected the option not to install the central admin page. Then the wizard continued to perform 10 steps only to fail on the 2nd with a message of denied access. The logs on both  servers revealed that another domain account is trying to access the database and its credentials weren't adequate. I don't where this other acc

Rename SharePoint 2010 Farm server

We have a 2 server farm--SharePoint 2010 Farm server and SQL 2008 server.  Unfortunately, the SP 2010 farm server needs to be renamed.  We're not yet a production environment, but I do have some sites created.  I'd rather not have to totally "reinvent the wheel".  What's the "best practice" for this type of situation?  Disconnect SP 2010 server from the config database first, then rename the SP 2010 server through Control Panel, reboot, and then reconnect to the database? If I do this, how will I connect to the CA?  I don't want to miss any crucial steps!

Dedicated Index Server in a SharePoint 2010 Server Farm

We want to have a dedicated Index server in our Sharepoint 2010 Farm and we have have Query roles on our WFE server itself.

I came across this - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointadmin/thread/f775c95d-4bec-450d-a56c-5114a0f52c0a in which it is written: " By installing WFE on Dedicated index server in SP2007 Farm, you will have benefits"

But as per my understanding , in Sharepoint 2010 Farm Setup, we dont need install WFE role on index server as index server will have to propogate index to query server and we cant avoid any network traffic.

Please validate my understanding and if you have any recommnedations for setting dedicated Index server in SP2010 Farm , please suggest .

Thanks .

Sharepoint 2010 - Error while running Configuration wizard for SP 2010 server farm

Hi All,

I am trying to set up a SP 2010 farm. I have windows server 2008 R2 installed and was able to install SP 2010 successfully. However when I ran the Sp 2010 Products and configuration wizard I am getting the following error at Step 3.

Failed to create the configuration database.
An exception of type System.Collections.Generic.KeyNotFoundException was thrown.  Additional exception information: The given key was not present in the dictionary.
System.Collections.Generic.KeyNotFoundException: The given key was not present in the dictionary.
   at System.ThrowHelper.ThrowKeyNotFoundException()
   at System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2.get_Item(TKey key)

I have installed all the prerequisites and I am on Microsoft Geneva Framework 1.0.30624.0 . I saw on a blog that Microsoft Geneve Framework beta 2 will actually cause the above problem. However I encountered the error with Beta 1 version as well.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Install Sharepoint 2010 on server farm

Hi All,

I am trying to install Sharepoint 2010 on my machine using server farm.Steps I performed are:

1.Installed Sql Server 2008 R2

adding a node to existing SQL Server 2000 cluster

We have a SQL 2000 cluster pair, say node A and node B. The node B has been corrupted and now the SQL instance is running only on node A. The node B has been rebuilt from scratch and OS reinstalled.

Now, we need to add the node B to node A and they should have a SQL cluster pair. Any one can provide any steps how to add this newly built node to an existing SQL 2000 cluster.

How to add SSRS Integration to an existing SharePoint 2010 farm

Note to Administrator: this post is regarding SharePoint 2010, but I was unable to select 2010 for the forum when creating the thread.  Please feel free to move it to the appropriate forum.

pre-2010 Moderator Note: I don't understand why not. Please in a later post add a paragraph with how you created the thread.

I've found some instructions on TechNet for configuring SSRS Integration with SharePoint 2010, however they all assume you are starting from scratch.  I have a production two-server farm up and running: a web front end and a database server (SQL 2008 R2).  Reporting Services is enabled and the SP-Integrated database created on the SQL server.

I tried installing the WFE bits on the SQL server and adding the server to the farm, but I encountered errrors trying to add it to the farm.  Does anyone have instructions for adding SSRS Integration to a production farm?
