Suddenly, documents are read-only for some users

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 25, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

In our SharePoint 2007 farm, some of our users are suddenly not able to modify Microsoft Office documents. This is NOT a permissions issue - the users clearly have write access to the folders involved.  When they open Office documents, they open read-only.  When they try to save Office documents, they get this error: "Documents in this folder are not available. The folder may have been moved or deleted, or network problems may be preventing a connection to the server."

The problem began around February 21 2010 when we installed the latest Windows updates on client PCs. (We are guessing the updates may have triggered the problem.) Out of 1000 users, only 10-12 have this problem, but it seems to be growing slowly (new cases every few days).

It seems like non-MS-Office documents (say, .txt files) are not affected. They are writable.

The users are running a variety of Windows versions and IE versions. They all have Office 2007, and they all used to be able to write Office documents in SharePoint.

Anybody else experiencing this? Any clues appreciated!

"Read Only" Access Error when checking in documents from outlook

Hello,

We are accessing our sharepoint services 3.0 document library through outlook 2007.

We can open the files in word/excel etc, but when we go to check-in the document the application tells us that we only have read access to the document, and cant check the document back in to the server.

It works fine via the browser, the read only problem is only when checking out through outlook.

I have given all users full access and design access to the doc library.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Damien.

limitate user permission to edit other users documents

force document 'save as' for visitor users for all documents.

hello we are using foundation as the basis for a customer extranet, one of the 'features' of sharepoint seems to be the inconsistancy of how it handles office and non-office documents. for pdf's the user is prompted for save as. For word docs if the (remote Ad authenticated )user has word this opens the document for the site and reprompts for credentials, i usderstand why this is happening as they are opening the document on different network. the question is can i force 'save as' for word and excel documents in the manner of pdfs for visitor level users. Thanks Mark

Publish personnal documents to users using mysite or an other way.

Hello all, I am required to find a way to create a self service site for each employee in my company where each one would have his section where we can publish to them, personnalized documents like their own benefitits and salary, bonus etc. I first tought that mysites was the perfect feature I wanted but it seems it's not possible to batch publish custom personnalised documents in private sections of my sites. Also, it seems that a user must connect at least one time to create his site. What would be the best way to achieve my goals? We are presently in Sharepoint 2007 but we plan to migrate in the next few month so I will also publish this question in the sp2010 forum. Thank you.

Office 2007 Documents Open in Read-Only when Opening them from a WSS 2.0 Document Library

Hi, When any of our Windows 7 Pro computers that run Office 2007 Pro attempt to open a Word document that resides in a WSS 2.0 document library by using the drop down menu and selecting "Edit with MS Word", the documents open in read-only.  Our work-around is to save the document locally, modify it, and then save it back to the document library. We have some Windows XP and Vista systems that run Office 2007 and they are fine and can simply edit the document and save it.  We also have a handful of pc's that run Office 2003 and they are not having any issues either. Things I've tried: Office 2007 Repair - no luck Office Reinstall - no luck Some registry mod HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12\Internet\OpenDocumentReadWrite=1 (noted on a MSKB article) - no luck and after re-reading the article it clearly states that this will not address content hosted on WSS or SPS sites Clearing IE temp files, resttting IE to defaults - no luck Once again, this only seems to happen to Win7Pro pc's that run Office 2007.  Honestly, I can't tell if IE8 has anything to do with this. Any thoughts or help would be extrememly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

What do I have to do to allow users read access to the cube?

(SQL 2005)

I'll try asking this again since I'm still not able to access my data cube.

I've developed a BI solution with SSIS, SSRS and SSAS.  The account I've used for development has had Domain Administrator permissions and I've never had a problem running an SSRS report that reads the cube.  When I use an account with less than Domain Admin permissions and try to run a SSRS report that runs a query against a SSAS cube the query fails.

I've set up a Domain User group and given it read access to the data sources in Report Manager.  I've given the group datareader role in ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB as well as the DataReader role in the SSAS cube.

Why can't I read any data from the cube???

How to place security on a document library such that users only see documents they created?

When using lists, it is easy to specify that users can only see lists that they created (through Advanced Settings)... Is there a similar way to do this with document libraries? Rather than doing item level security... Thanks.

TreeView in Web Part required webctrl_client folder to have atlease read access for all users

HI All

I am using the TreeView control from the Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls Namespace to render a treeview in a SharePoint web part. The tree nodes images do not appear (text is rendered) properly until i grant atleast read permissions to Authenticated Users on the webctrl_client folder which has to be places in the web application's virtual directory.

Is there some way I can avoid granting the read permission on that folder to all authenticated users.

If i go ahead with the approach of giving the authenticated users rad permission, will a user loggedin via FBA get the read permission

Thanks in Advance

Read-only users cannot navigate to other subsites using Insert Hyperlink

I have an Intranet site collection that is comprised of a top level publishing site and a single layer of a dozen publishing subsites, one for each component of our organization. I want to give contributors in those subsites the ability to link to pages on another org's subsite. Everyone has at least read-only permissions on all subsites. But here is what happens when they try it:

From their local Pages library, the user edits a page in the browser and selects a text string in the Content Editor Web Part, then clicks the "Insert Hyperlink" glyph, then clicks "Browse", which creates the "Select A Link -- Webpage Dialog" pop-up window that shows all the pages in the local Pages library. To navigate to another subsite, he clicks the up-arrow to navigate up the tree but when he clicks up to go to the top level site he gets "403 FORBIDDEN".

As the owner of the sites, I have no problem navigating up and down and around the site collection tree. How do I give the ordinary user the ability to do the same? I've tried giving them "contribute" permissions but I get the same error.

Broken Images for Users with Read access

Hi

we just have moved our existing sharepoint team site to an extranet site and ran into a strange issue with images. Two of the images on our extranet site does not show up for users with Read access .They see little red "x" instead.  It only happens for two images not for all.

All images were added in Publishingimages or images folder and the library does inherit permissions from the main site.

any thoughts

Blocking Edit Document for Read only users in SharePoint 2007

I'm trying to create a group in one of my sites that is Read only - truly read only.  Seems no matter what I do, the users can click on Edit Document, check out, check in, and the document is changed.  It doesn't show as changed in the Modified or Modified By columns, but the changes I make to test are there.  How do I create a group that can open a document, but can NOT check it out, can NOT Edit Document, and then check it back in?

Why, after a week, does my program download suddenly prompt users on shield rights?

I download into a created folder: csidl_common_appdata and the game was working great from a desktop icon for about a week.  Now, suddenly the permission shield sticks to the icon and I wonder if this is because I need to do registry updating while deploying....

All documents open as Read Only in Office 2010 from SharePoint 2007

I have recently installed Office 2010 and now when I select "Edit in Microsoft Word" from a SharePoint document library, the document will only open as Read Only.  I am running SharePoint 2007 SP1, I have admin rights to the workstation, server, sharepoint list and document.

I have tried the registry entry " OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing = 1 " but that has made no difference.  I have also run webfldrs.msi with no effect.  The website is a trusted site and I have switched off all of the protected view options.

Any help welcome!
